Genetic counseling works as well over the phone as in person, study finds

Genetic counseling by telephone was as good as in-person consultation in a study that examined psychosocial outcomes for women at risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

WASHINGTON — Genetic counseling delivered via telephone matched up with the traditional in-person consultation in long-term psychosocial outcomes for women at risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer in a randomized trial, a researcher said here.

“This is one of the first studies to. That’s important not only for these at-risk women, but also because “as testing becomes more popular for other cancers, there’s just not enough capacity to see [everyone] in person.”
