Deadlines

POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES state, national, and international prizes in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. We list only prizes of $1,000 or more, prizes of less than $1,000 that charge no entry fee, and prestigious nonmonetary awards. Applications and submissions for the following prizes are due shortly. Before submitting a manuscript, first contact the sponsoring organization for complete guidelines. When requesting information by mail, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). Academy of American Poets

LENORE MARSHALL POETRY PRIZE

A prize of $25,000 is given annually for a poetry collection by a living poet published in the United States during the previous year. Copies of the winning book are purchased and distributed to hundreds of members of the Academy of American Poets. Laura Kasischke, Campbell McGrath, and Mary Szybist will judge. U.S. publishers may submit four copies of a book published in 2017 with a $75 entry fee by May 15. Visit the website for the required entry form and complete guidelines.

JAMES LAUGHLIN AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a second book of poetry by a living poet to be published in the current year. The winner also receives an all-expenses-paid weeklong residency at the Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Copies of the winning book are purchased and distributed to approximately 1,000 members of the Academy of American Poets. Patricia Spears Jones, Craig Santos Perez, and Prageeta Sharma will judge. U.S. publishers may submit four copies of a manuscript of at least 48 pages that has come under contract and will be published in 2018 by May 15. There is no entry fee. American Literary Translators Association

NATIONAL TRANSLATION AWARDS

Two prizes of $2,500 each are given annually for a book of poetry and a book of prose translated from any language into English and published in the previous year. For the poetry prize, poetry collections and verse dramas in translation are eligible; for the prose prize, short story collections and essay collections, novels, memoirs, prose drama, and hybrid prose works in translation are eligible. Publishers may submit a book published in 2017 by April 16. The entry fee is $50 for presses that publish more than 10 titles each year, and $30 for presses that publish fewer than 10 titles each year. Visit the website for complete guidelines. LUCIEN STRYK ASIAN TRANSLATION PRIZE

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a book of poetry translated from an Asian language into English and published in the previous year. Translations of Zen Buddhist source texts are also eligible. Publishers may submit a poetry collection translated from Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, Tamil, Thai, or Vietnamese into English and published in 2017 by April 16. There is no entry fee. ITALIAN PROSE IN TRANSLATION AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a book of fiction or nonfiction translated from Italian into English and published in the previous year. Publishers may submit a book published in 2017 by April 16. There is no entry fee. Visit the website for complete guidelines. (SEE RECENT WINNERS.)

CLIFF BECKER BOOK PRIZE IN TRANSLATION

A prize of $1,000 and publication by White Pine Press is given annually for a book of poetry translated from any language into English. Arts & Letters

ARTS & LETTERS PRIZES

Three prizes of $1,000 each and publication in Arts & Letters are given annually for a group of poems, a short story, and an essay. Alfred Corn will judge in poetry, Melissa Prichard will judge in fiction, and Joni Tevis will judge in nonfiction. Using the online submission system, submit four to six poems or up to 25 pages of prose with a $20 entry fee by March 31. All entries are considered for publication.
