5 years after the death of Glee star Cory Monteith, his mother speaks out about the son she loved and lost
TRAGIC LOSS Prior to his death, he had been “looking forward to the future,” says Cory Monteith’s mother, Ann McGregor. “He had so much to live for.”

On July 13, just as she has for the past four years, Ann McGregor took a 30-min. drive to a peaceful stretch of coastline in British Columbia and returned to the spot where she had scattered the ashes of her son, former Glee star Cory Monteith, who died of a heroin overdose on that same date in 2013, at age 31.

“I try to visit as much as I can,” says McGregor, who chose the idyllic beach because it was her late son’s beloved spot. “But sometimes I’m not strong enough to deal with the reality.”

Indeed, coping with the loss of her younger son (her older, Shaun, 38, is a construction worker) has proved at times overwhelming. “My whole life stopped when Cory died,” says McGregor, 67, who moved to a small community outside of Sooke, B.C., after Monteith’s death to escape “the triggers” of living in the city of Victoria he once called home. “I’m still shattered.
