From No. 1 pick to 76ers GM, Elton Brand embracing challenge of running a team: 'I have to get this right for them'

On June 27, 2001, Elton Brand walked out of his house, got into his car and navigated the 2-mile drive to the Berto Center, then the Bulls' practice facility in north suburban Deerfield.

Brand did this a mere hour after then-general manager Jerry Krause made the stunning move to trade the former No. 1 pick and Rookie of the Year to the Clippers for the draft rights to teenager Tyson Chandler.

To be clear, not many players would make such an effort. But to Brand, making himself available to reporters as an ex-Bull was simply the right thing to do.
