herbs that HANG AROUND

There’s nothing like popping out to the garden or verandah and brushing your hands over aromatic and scented plants to relieve the stresses of the day. Herbs are wonderful for that — as well as for your cooking, of course.

Sometimes, out of season, you don’t have the herb you want, but if you grow a good range of perennial herbs you’ll always have some flavour-filled foliage to add to your daily cuisine. Some can even act as substitutes.

You might even design your herb garden around these perennials so they can act as a kind of framework. Or if, like me, you’re an eclectic gardener, you may have your perennial herbs dotted around the place: rosemary on the retaining wall, curry bush down the driveway, gold oregano spilling over terracotta pots, bay tree espaliered across the fence, lavender hedged, thyme between the pavers and so on.
