The musical home

“Life seems to go on without effort when I am filled with music,” wrote George Elliot in The Mill on the Floss. This is true for most of us and a good incentive to seek out and enjoy more music in our home environments.

Studies show that music can alleviate pain, anxiety, stress and depression, boost memory and healing and enhance recovery after surgery. Music also adds to the daily fabric of our lives in important ways. It touches our soul, uplifts us, helps us feel and express emotions; it can boost creativity, energy and focus and also make us feel more connected to others.

Want to enjoy a little yoga, meditation or stillness? Classical compositions, Gregorian chants or ambient music can help soothe and calm you or simply provide a gentle soundtrack for eating a meal or reading a book. Favourite pop or indie music can give you an instant lift and offer a welcome diversion when you’re doing domestic chores. Classic hits provide singalong opportunities that deepen your shared human experience and make you feel more intimate with your partner, kids, relatives and friends.
