Anneka heads for the hills

It was just as well that I’d made sure Anneka was well-covered, as, after a good night’s sleep, I awoke to find it raining, though gradually slackening off. I’d picked the wrong side of the shed, so a rain-spattered Anneka was standing in a puddle, and needed moving to a firmer spot before I could kick-start her on the stand, where she caught, spluttering, fourth or fifth kick. But I didn’t worry about wet getting in the control cables, as this time I’d applied heavy grease at the handlebar ends. The damp weather was both unwelcome and obscurely reassuring, after the parched summer in the south – this was how the Highlands were supposed to be. Another piece of prep had been buying new £24 overtrousers online, designed so that you could get them on easily enough over your boots, which I now did.
