SIGNATURE CONCIERGE

Within a voluptuary volcano

Dramatically perched within the amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, the six thatched-roof villas that make up Rwandan forest retreat Bisate Lodge are constructed in harmony with the surrounding environment. Even during the construction phase, tools were carried by hand to the site – at some 2,650 metres’ altitude – in order to ensure that the vegetation not be damaged.

The lodge’s interiors are filled with richly textured patterns that recall the Rwandan art form of imigongo and emerald accents that echo the verdant forest outside. A crackling fire is prepared each evening between the bedroom and living area, and the menu fuses local cuisine ingeniously with international flavours. Beyond, meet the gorillas of Volcanoes National Park with guided treks and explore the rich biodiversity of the Albertine Rift. wilderness-safaris.com
