In Victoria’s gold-rush days, the most direct route to the diggings at Ballarat was northwest from the port of Geelong across what is today the shire of Golden Plains. That road is now called the Midland Highway and there, about midway between the townships of Bannockburn and Lethbridge, is where you’ll find Sage Farm.
“Sage Farm is no ordinary farm,” proclaims its website. Comprising 110 acres, around half of which is a steep incline to the Moorabool River with sweeping views across the Mirrabool Valley, it is what owner Chris Balazs calls a “regenerative farm”. Besides animals, it features a market garden, butchery, kitchen/shop and homestay.
