DAY 4
The trip started well on Saturday with a visit to Turner’s Auto Wrecking in Fresno, California, but since then all I’ve found are a handful of cars and trucks hiding out in Nevada ghost towns. I’m hoping my luck will change today with a visit to L&L Classic Auto of Wendell, Idaho. I last visited the yard 20 years ago, and at the time they didn’t exactly welcome me with open arms, permitting me to photograph just a tiny section of the yard, containing 200 of its 8000 cars.
The drive north west takes me through Twin Falls, and over the Perrine Bridge – the eighth tallest bridge in the US. I contemplate flying the newly bought drone under the 146m high bridge, when suddenly I notice BASE jumpers leaping off it. That could have had a very unhappy ending for both parties. An hour later I’m driving up highway 46 towards the yard in my borrowed Ram 3500 Laramie pick-up. I can see it in the distance. In fact, it can probably be seen from space! There are 120 acres of old cars spread over the rocky hillside, 85% of which are older than 1979.
I’m desperate to explore this place, and am nervous they’ll refuse. But I needn’t have worried because this time
