Not much more than a month after the First World War started, 30-year-old divorcee Elsie Knocker and 18-year-old Mairi Chisholm were running a first aid post on the western front, having abandoned their lives at home to ‘do their bit’ for the war effort. In doing so, they became two of the most famous women of the war, receiving a host of medals for bravery and serving throughout the entire four-year conflict.
