Much has been written about John DeLorean and his ill-fated stainless steel, gull-wing sports car, built with UK government money in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland during the Eighties, and he will be most remembered for his attempt to build his ‘ethical’ sports car and his subsequent fall from grace. However, this relatively short period of his career in the automotive business often overshadows the immense successes he was able to garner while on the fast-track to becoming one of General Motors’ top executives.
During this 17-year period, he was responsible for bringing in numerous technical innovations for Pontiac and Chevrolet, as well as enabling the creation of some of the most iconic American cars ever built – achievements made despite the regressive GM management dogma of the time.
