Newsom heads to El Salvador in April in first international trip as Calif. governor

LOS ANGELES - California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday he would travel to El Salvador next month in his first international trip since taking office to better understand the forces driving migration to the United States.

Sitting in a Los Angeles health care clinic founded by Salvadoran refugees, Newsom described the trip as an opportunity to exert California's leadership, learn about the migration problem and communicate it to the public, and help "change the conversation on immigration and move away from responding to the president of the United States, (who) simply doesn't get it and does not get much done."
