The beauty, splendour and sheer mystery of our ocean-going friends the whales have always mesmerized human beings. But very recent research reveals the lengths that they are prepared to go to in order to care for one another. Some scientists describe the way whale species care for one another as ‘a superpower for good’. Others say that some species, especially the humpback, are a true definition of ‘altruism’ (acting to improve the welfare of others).
