Tracing The Expanding Definition Of Fatherhood

After his son's birth, Dirk Anschütz photographed fathers and sons for six years. "There's a lot of change going on right now regarding what fatherhood means, what masculinity means," he says.
Isma is a musician from Equatorial Guinea and moved with his wife to Washington, D.C., where they had a son named Matteo. It wasn't easy for Isma to move to a new country, learn a new language and be a new dad all at the same time.

In 2012, Brooklyn, N.Y.-based photographer Dirk Anschütz became a father. The shift in his life was enormous.

Anschütz was raised by a single mother. "I had never met my father, which was never a big deal," he says. But after his son Ray's birth, Anschütz says he didn't have a male parenting role model.
