PROVISIONAL FOR 25 YEARS

At the start of 1950s, was evident that the area of Santos Dumont Airport didn t had space to meet the crescent demand from the city of Rio de Janeiro. A solution found was to build (at the same time it was decided to built in the Galeão Air Base, where landed large commercial aircraft since 1945) a temporary passenger station to receive the international flights, as planned, a New Definitive Airport for the then Capital Federal. Inaugurated in February 1952, the narrow building served as a Rio main gate for the next 25 years, until the the delivery of Terminal 1 of the new Galeão, in 1977.

HIGHER AND FASTER

Korean War has demonstrated the vulnerability of piston strategic bombers against the new jet fighters. The US response was developing new models capable to fly at high altitudes and faster, making interception difficult. In April 1952, flew the first specimen of the Boeing B-52A. Under inflected wings, with 56 meters span, the eight jet engines were capable to carry the giant aircraft to an altitude of 15,000 meters sustaining a speed of nearly two thousand kilometers per hour. Considered as one of the history’s most successful projects, some tens of B-52 of the last H version (manufactured in early 1960) continue in operation in the USAF.
