      Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsLogan and Gwen’s long awaited first date finally takes place but as expected, in true Frost fashion, it blows up spectacularly. Too bad that spilling coffee onto the Spartan’s lap is the least of her problems. Gwen’s first meeting with her beau’s dad doesn’t exactly go well either; overprotective parents are one thing but arresting your son’s teenage girlfriend seems like overkill to me. Crimson Frost takes off running and doesn’t let up until Reaper bodies litter the floor. Literally. This is another fabulously bloody installment in Jennifer Estep’s Mythos Academy series!After Gwen’s arrest, things go from bad to worse for her and even grandma Frost’s attempt to cheer her up with comfort food from the Pork Pitt falls short. My heart ached for our Gypsy girl because after three books, she was finally beginning to find her place at the academy and this novel felt like that for every step forward she took, she got knocked back by two. It was a little shocking how quickly Gwen’s classmates and even a few teachers turned against her. Thank goodness for Logan, Daphne and Carson! Frost also gains a shadow in this installment in the form of a third year Mythos student named Alexei, who’s a new addition to this series. At first this Protectorate wannabe rubbed me the wrong way but he gradually proves that he’s more than just a yes-man and I have a feeling that he’ll be tagging along with Gwen’s crew in future books.I like how you never really know who to suspect in these novels; Reapers can be anyone. So far they’ve been mostly students but in this installment, even the Protectorate’s not above suspicion and they’re supposed to the law enforcement of the Pantheon. I had a difficult time trusting any of them, including Linus, which added even more complications to Gwen and Logan’s relationship. The back-and-forth smack talk between Vic and Lucretia is hilariously barbaric. These two are out for blood and aren’t afraid to advertise that fact. I was also right there with Frost on this one; what the heck is up with the stone statues? Are they alive? Because they seemed kind of pissed off at Gwen over her supposed betrayal. I’m hoping that when they finally do come into play that it’s spectacular because Estep has had me curious about them for quite some time now.Poor Logan, that’s all I’m really going to say on that front… This novel starts off on a high note where he’s concerned but things quickly deteriorate from there; we all have a few “do not push buttons” and unfortunately his get bulldozed. However, he is a Spartan, the most dangerous and deadliest of all the warriors, and the best fighter at Mythos so I’m sure he’ll come around in time. I just hope that it won’t be too little too late.Each Mythos Academy book has been bloodier than the last which makes Crimson Frost a very fitting title for this installment. This is definitely one of the better YA series’ out there now bring on Midnight Frost!

Suddenly nothing is a given anymore, there’s so much scheming going on, so many mind games… I couldn’t do anything but turn page after page. I just had to know if everything would be alright. But I wasn’t left alone for even one second to catch my breath. There’s so much happening that this book will keep you on the edge of your seat, while sincerely hoping for a happy ending. And I loved every minute!Gwen’s task is slowly but surely revealed, finally . Although a stare in the face, it still get’s more interesting by the minute. With Nike’s guidance on how to complete her task, it looks like it will be about many different kind of creatures, so I’m thrilled and curious how everything will go. Which mythological creatures will I meet along the way? What will their stories be? I can’t wait to find out!Talking about Gwen, she sure had a grow spurt in Crimson Frost. Finally no more idiotic or thoughtless behavior. Only well-thought plans and successful operations, well… most of the time. But you can’t expect miracles, can you ;) Anyway she’s back to the spunk-ass heroine I liked so much in A Touch of Frost. Someone who’s willing to do everything she can for her friends. Someone who has her heart in the right place and knows what to do in dire situations. Now I can finally see why Nike chose her ^^Conclusion4 HEARTS. I liked this book so much more than the others. Everything those lacked, I could find here. It’s a stunning story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Cause it’s impossible to predict what will happen. And the only way to find out is by reading the next page. I was also very happy with Gwen, who made a tremendous improvement. No more annoying heroine!

      Another great edition to the Mythos Academy series and probably the best one so far. What I like about this series is that they are always quick, fun reads, able to be devoured in a matter of hours. The content was slightly heavier, the stakes slightly higher but still it kept me engrossed from start to finish.

      The story line was quite cleverly done and advanced the major plot crossing the books. I did pick a bit of it well before the conclusion but still found the conclusion a satisfying ending even if my heart had trouble with the cliff hanger at the end.

      As usual, the characters were engaging and I liked the new characters that were introduced. We got to find out a little more about some of the peripheral characters which adds further depth to this already great series.

      I am really enjoying this series and this instalment in particular. It's just a shame i now have to wait till August 2013 for the next instalment: Midnight Frost.

      Cover Impressions: This cover is kind of boring. We have Gwen's often mentioned violet eyes as a focal point but I am not a fan of the dragon? Griffin? in the background. I am also annoyed by the portrayal of her snowflake necklace. The description in the book is of a delicate diamond tipped snowflake - yet the one in the cover image looks like it was picked up at the dollar store.

      The Gist: Still reeling from the escape of Loki and Gwen's brush with death at the hands of his reapers, her safe haven at Mythos Academy is shattered by the appearance of the Protectorate. Suddenly Gwen is being accused of the unthinkable and she must defend herself or face execution.

      Review:
      I read Crimson Frost right on the heels of finishing the first three books in this series. In the beginning, I cut Gwen quite a bit of slack. In series like these you often find a deeply flawed (and often annoying) main character whose experiences force her to grow as a person and gain some confidence in her abilities. However, Gwen just seemed to get more irritating as the books continued. I kept wanting her to grow up a little, but she never does. She is unable to piece together even the most obvious of clues and spends a lot of the book whining about her circumstances. She never stands up for her self and is incredibly self-centered. The other characters serve only to rescue Gwen, or to listen to her moan. Despite including several interesting mythologies, the only characters we really get to see in action are Spartans, Valkyries and, occasionally, Amazons. Why even bother mentioning the other types of warriors if you never plan to use them?

      The plot itself is very predictable - partly because Gwen has to be beaten over the head with multiple clues before she will clue in to what is going on. I often found myself skimming pages because I had already figured out the plot twists and was waiting for Gwen to catch up. The action also ground to a halt every time that we came into contact with one of the villains. They seemed to all be suffering from some strange compulsion to spend pages explaining plans and facts that the reader has already figured out. It is almost like a satire of every action movie where the villain takes an inordinate amount of time to reveal every detail of his nefarious plot - except in the Mythos Academy novels, it isn't funny.

      The first half of this book was dull and frustrating. Jennifer Estep is the queen of the re-cap. She feels the need to repeat (often in a very close to copy - paste fashion) nearly every detail from every book. I know what you are saying: but recapping is great for those who don't read the series back to back and yes, I agree. However, the repetition that bothers me is of innocuous points that do nothing to further the storyline. For example, in every single book she feels the need to remind me that the library is more hangout that place of work and that students go there to hook up, even going so far as to remind the reader that Gwen regularly finds condoms in the stacks. I DID NOT NEED TO READ THAT FOUR TIMES!

      All of that being said, I think that I am mostly upset by this book because it has so much potential. The world that Estep has created is unique and interesting. I love novels that re-work and combine different mythologies. I enjoyed the side characters whenever they got a (brief) moment in the spotlight and sometimes found myself longing for the series to follow Daphne instead of Gwen. I also keep getting the feeling that this series is being stretched too thin. It could have been well developed and wrapped up within three or four books but, based on the plot progression thus far, is more likely to take nine or ten. Unfortunately, I think I will be getting off on this stop - that is, unless the next book promises more Logan and Daphne, less Gwen and some closure on a few underlying issues.

      Just when Gwen thinks she may be settling in at Mythos Academy, along come the Protectorate, a policing organization for the Gods, who are ready to try Gwen for the release of Loki. Estep's world of Amazons, Romans, Valkyries and Vikings remains populated with both good and bad people and this installment of Gwen's life is as exciting as usual.

      CRIMSON FROST is book 4 in the Mythos Academy series by one of my favorite Authors Jennifer Estep. Gwen has done a lot and come a long way from book 1 so I would definitely suggest starting the series from A TOUCH OF FROST so you can get the full effects of Gwen and the world in which she lives in. The reapers are once again causing trouble for Gwen and her allies, they somehow convinced everyone that Gwen is Loki's champion and working for them and she is now under arrest and awaiting trial. Gwen continues to grow in her role as Nike's Champion. She has a way of figuring out just about every obstacle that is thrown at her even if its after trouble has gone on a little to long. She is always the first to fight for those she sees the need to protect and is very easy to relate to. Even with the troubles she faces in book 4 she is still fiercely worried about other. I continue to love all the characters in the series. Gwen's Grandma as always continues to surprise me and I enjoyed the addition of Alexei to the series. The love story that is Gwen and Quinn just cant seem to catch a break, it makes me sad and I'm not sure what could possibly happen to them next. The ending left a lot open and a lot to consider for multiple characters. CRIMSON FROST was a great addition to the series and as always I'm excited to continue the story. Book 5 MIDNIGHT FROST is set to release in July 2013 and I will be one of the first to try and get my hands on it.

      Wow. Crimson Frost is my favorite book in the series, so far. This novel is action-packed and full of romance and nonstop suspense. I could not put it down! Gwen grew a ton as a character over the arc of this story, and some new characters (and mythological types) were introduced. This is one book that will not disappoint!Gwen was fantastic in this book. The poor girl can't catch a break, and this time she's facing the death penalty. Thankfully, she was much smarter in this book than she was the last one. She really stood on her own and took care of herself (and everyone else) in this installment. I really like how her character is progressing, and I can't wait to see how much stronger she gets in the next book. Logan was super sweet in this novel. I now love him even more, if that's possible. Daphne, Carson, Oliver, Grandma Frost, Vic, Metis, Nickamedes, and Coach Ajaxx were also great additions to the story, as usual. I also really liked the new characters we got introduced to... even the bad guys. They were interesting. No cookie-cutter characters from Estep, that's for sure. Crimson Frost was fast-paced, but nothing felt rushed. The plot was extremely intense. The problems started within the first few pages and continued until the end of the novel. Some of the issues were solved during the course of the book, but others got added. It didn't really end on a cliffhanger, but the ending left an opening for Midnight Frost, which comes out in August of 2013 (I can't wait!). I would go into more detail here, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Let me just say that you will not be able to put this book down. Overall, I'd recommend this series to anyone who loves YA mythology-inspired/supernatural books. For those of you who have already read the previous books in the series, you cannot miss this novel. It's the best one yet. I, personally, can't wait to see what Gwen and co. get into next.

      My first thoughts after finishing this books...speechless. Amazed. And holy moly do I want MORE! The best part about this book is the great plot. Once I opened the book, my feet easily touch the grounds of Mythos's Academy where I walk among the students and drama. Gwen is finally ( believe me when I say three books of waiting for this moment is enough) getting her time with the hot, hott, hottie Spartan. My smile on my face was so freaking huge during these times. They had very few precious moments, but I adored them all. The plot of course did not stop there. It consisted of an amazing major plot twist with a heart-wrenching ending that only made me angry that I finish this book so fast!The love interest is of course what I wanted and more. They continually worked together as well as help each other with the problems that are going on campus. I liked that they trusted each other so much. No matter what battle they were fighting they stood next to each other, side by side, fighting for what they have. Until the end. Oh spartan, you wound my heart!Crimson Frost is by far my favorite of the series. The reader gets what they longed for only having it ripped away before I could get a good enough taste. Still, it left such good flavor, it could all my might to savor what is left of the book. Crimson Frost is stunning and powerful. Every pivotal moment leads to a battle of a lifetime. And folks, the battle has just began. Beautiful and brilliantly articulated, Crimson Frost is astounding!

      An intense tale of dark conspiracy, anger, and strength.

      Gwen and her growing circle of friends and allies stick together to fight against the reaper's subtle manipulations and surprise assaults.

      Once again the narrator has done an outstanding job at bringing to life the personalities of the Mythos Academy world. How easy it is for a group to become a mob if you give them a target for their hate and grief. And how easy it is to direct and control such a mob.

      From the beginning, I was sucked in to story and held their with the need to know what would happen next. I knew things would get bad. But, how bad? Who would stand by Gwen, how, when, and why? Would it be enough. What would be the cost of their success, and would the cost be worth it.

      While the story is severe almost brutal at times, it is well balanced with humor, sometimes snarky, and a few aww moments.

      I love both this book and the series so far. It gets a little repetitive at times but that's mostly for those who haven't read the series in order. Something I wouldn't recommend. I do strongly suggest you make time in your schedule to read or listen to this story as you won't want to stop.

      Celeste’s review: 4.5 stars Well, I couldn’t wait to jump right back into to Logan’s arms this series. I have all the love for these books and they get better and better. If you love Mythology you must, must, must read these! This one was action packed. I was biting my nails from the beginning and the stress didn’t stop until I read the last page. And yes, that is a good thing!

      In the last book, Dark Frost, Gwen was essentially forced into freeing the evil god, Loki. Now the fate of the world was on her shoulders, but to intensify the situation Gwen was arrested by the Protectorate on bogus charges. But she wasn’t arrested on a normal day, it was her first date with Logan UNF Quinn (yes, one of my favorite fictional males to date). While the real threat is still out there, Gwen must also prepare to defend herself for the trial of her life. She has the backing of her boyfriend and friends, but nothing is as simple as that. I sat down and buckled up for the ride.

      One of the reasons I adore this series is because of the heroine, Gwen Frost. She is kick-ass and has a good head on her shoulders. I’d really want to be friends with her in real life. Not to be outdone, is the Spartan, Logan, aka the manwhore at Mythos Academy…but he has seen the light and only has eyes for Gwen. Yes, I was ready for some loving!!

      I also adored so many of the secondary characters in this series. Not only would I want Gwen for a friend in real life, but her friends as well. I think it’s hard to write successful likeable supporting characters, and Ms. Estep does this so well. As much as I loved Daphne, Kenzi, Oliver, Carson and Alexei, my favorite is Vic. Hands. Down. I found myself always laughing when he said anything! He is pure awesome!!!!

      Twists and turns and double crossings: oh how I love them. We all knew there was an insider once Gwen started putting two and two together, but who it was the next mystery. This person was eventually revealed and it really did fill in so many holes, but at the same time made me feel sad because there had been so many pointless killings. Who was it? I’m not telling but I bet you won’t guess!

      Ok, so I have to give some constructive criticism on this, right? Well, I guess I would have liked some more kissy time with Gwen and Logan. This installment just didn’t have time for it though *cries*. I understand that, but I am a total sucker for romance and wish that some moment (or a long moment) could have been stolen. Sadly, I think I will have to wait for the dust to settle before they have a chance for some smexy time.

      The ending was heart wrenching, I was so upset!! Gwen is a stronger person than I would be. I don’t know how I will make it to the next book!! If you love Mythology I can’t rec this series enough. You won’t be disappointed.       I really enjoyed this audiobook! I think that this series seems to get better and better with each book. As this book opens, Gwen is finally out on a date with Logan when she is taken into custody to stand trial for letting Loki go. Of course, she is innocent but will she be able to prove that to everyone else? I was glued to my headphones eager to see how things would work out for Gwen.I was pretty worried about Gwen in this book since the odds really seemed to be against her. To make matters worse, the leader of the crew putting her on trial is none other than Logan’s father along with his stepmother. She has a guard assigned to her but is allowed to go to classes until the trial is over and she is not treated well by the other Mythos Academy students. There are some pretty big revelations in this book along with a mystery that kept me guessing. I love the fact that this book is full of action but still focuses on the friendships between this group of students.Tara Sands continues to do a fabulous job with the narration of this series. I really enjoy the various character voices that she uses which helps to pull me into the story. I think that she has a very pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for hours at a time. I am confident that her narration added to my enjoyment of this book.I would definitely recommend this book to others. This is the fourth book in the Mythos Academy series which I would definitely recommend reading in order since each book builds on the events from previous books. This book had everything that I was looking for and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next installment.

      I have fallen in love with this series and the characters. Estep always keeps me enthralled with her storyline.

      This book is probably my favorite in the series. I'm pretty sure I said that with Dark Frost, but I mean it this time! ;) The loyalty Gwen's friends show her is awesome. Even though she's accused of setting Loki free, her friends never leave her side. The rest of the students at Mythos behave awful towards Gwen. It kind of reminded me of the villagers storming Frankenstein's castle to kill the Creature. It saddened me that so many people believed what they were told without questioning the accusations. These folks should be ashamed of themselves.

      The story pretty much follows Gwen doing the best she can to clear her name while staying out of trouble. (Easier said than done.) Of course, the Reapers want her out of the way, and have plans of their own. These plans have been set in motion for many years, and the person(s) behind it will shock you!

      I loved the characters even more this go-around. Gwen is so strong and determined. I completely admire her. She also takes the reins and does what she can to save herself in these impossible situations, instead of relying on others. Logan is incredibly sweet. You begin to see just how deep his feelings are for his "Gypsy Girl." he also begins to face some of the issues he has with this dad, Linus. Now, let's move on to Linus. I wanted to smack the mess out of him many times. He's arrogant and condescending. He thinks he's always right, and doesn't take being wrong well.

      You will need tissues, just sayin'. I think this books plays a key part in the events that are coming.

      I love books that have Gods, especially Greek Gods, in modern times. I really love the world that Jennifer Estep created and the people in it.

      This book was so good and I couldn't stop reading and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. It was great to see Logan's dad and to get a glimpse into Logan's life. The book started out great and the ending was fantastic and it made you want to go and pick up the next book to find out what happens next.

      Quick Review...for when I don't have a lot to say...

      I find myself liking Gwen more and more with each book in this series. I think she's getting stronger as we go. I didn't really like her much in the first book, but she's definitely growing on me.

      Daphne started out this series as one of my least favorite characters. I thought she was the stereotypical mean girl, but I was wrong about her. She's turned into a very good friend - loyal and smart. I really like her. I also really like Carson, her band-geek boyfriend. He's very lovable.

      The plot thickens as well. Now, everyone thinks Gwen is behind the events of Dark Frost, the previous installment. I'm really enjoying where we're headed. I have some ideas about what could happen and I'll be interested to see if I'm right. The action was just right in this book. It kept me hooked and wanting more. Yay for that!

      I'm looking forward to Midnight Frost, which comes out later this year. Stay tuned for my thoughts on that.

The girl just can't catch a break even when on her very first date with a hot Spartan. Heck, even Logan needs a break because not only is it his dad doing the arresting but he has to relive some old family trama. Overall, Crimson Frost had political intrigue, family issues, and growing pains for Gwen and Logan. This was a game changer in their relationship and also how the world at large plays into the fight. Needless to say, it was a nail biter.Character Thoughts: I like Gwen! She is spunky, smart, and just downright original. I also really like Logan. He is smart, strong, and not perfect. For some reason it is always important that the leads be flawed. I really like the adults (Grandma, Teachers) in Crimson Frost. They aren't absent or uncaring. They show up! They are there! They are adults. Granted these kids are being taught to fight and take on above their age situations so the adults act accordingly but they are there. Gwen's circle of friends are a big reason why Gwen is able to be kick ass. They have her back and I think a new one made the circle this time. Which is good because I liked him. The characters are what make this series shine!Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Tara Sands / Release Date: 12-24-12 I liked Tara Sands narration of this series. She does a great job with Gwen and nails her spunk! The boys voices are less done well but her cadence works for them. This one had more of the guys so the audio rating is lower than normal. Overall this is one of those series that I half read/half listen too but the audio overall works for me.Final Thoughts: Next one please!

I have heard great things about the series. So what did I do? I went back from book one and started at the beginning. I wanted to know the whole world that Estep created. She promised mythology and wonder, and let me tell you, boy did she.Life has taken a shape of normalcy for Gwen, as normal as things can be. As Nike’s champion, Gwen is a primary target for the Reapers and Loki’s champion, Vivian. But while she somewhat felt safe within the protection of Mythos Academy, a new threat is revealed, the Protectorate. The judge and jury of their world, the Protectorate has accused Gwen of helping Loki escape as well as the fact that she’s a Reaper. And the person who is leading the charges and accusations is Linus Quinn, Logan’s father.Gwen has grown so much since the beginning. She’s more certain of herself, her powers, and of her own ability to stand up on her own. Gwen still has her own insecurities, but with the amount of pressure she has (defeat the Reapers and Loki), I think it’s justified. She tries her best, which is what anyone can ask for, and I love how Estep has kept her flaws. Gwen has a realistic voice of a teenager trying to stay afloat in a world she was thrown in, and that is the best part about her character.Estep’s supporting characters aren’t just in the background. Throughout the Mythos Academy stories, each character has grown in a way that is unique on their own. Their voices are strong, and each has a connection that is different from the others. Whether it’s Daphne’s feminine strength or Logan’s gallant behaviors, Gwen is lucky to be surrounded by such a wonderful cast.I was lucky enough to read the books back-to-back. I was able to appreciate how well the story and character progressed within each story. Crimson Frost is a little more established with its own world and setting, so I think Estep took risks. And these risks were well worth taking. There was a darker theme throughout the story, mostly inevitable since the end of the story is looming over our heads. There is more danger and doom, but rightfully so. The story of good versus evil is gaining in momentum, and I love the force that Estep brings it. Each moment was riveting and had me at the edge of my seat.Specifically, in Crimson Frost, Estep has taken us around the familiar surroundings of Mythos Academy. But what differs in this book than the others is the tone of the school itself. It’s a lot darker, a lot stricter, and I’m sure Gwen is feeling it. With the accusations, she is watched more carefully. It’s an interesting double take on the school, and I really enjoyed it.Estep is a talented author, telling us her version of mythology. Her world is filled with fantasy, but set in a realistic setting that often seems like it is a part of the reader’s world. I highly recommend that you read Crimson Frost.Notable Scene:“Evidence will be collected, and you will be questioned about the findings, along with your actions. Then, a group of Protectorate members will make a final decision about your guilt or innocence,” he continued. “You should know that the charges against you are some of the most serious I’ve ever seen, especially for a Mythos student. I’ve been reading this series since it was first published and waiting for the main characters, Gwen and Logan, to get together and it finally happened..sort of.Gwen has been an interesting character from the very first book. As she matures and grows more and more comfortable with her role as Nike’s Champion, I find myself rooting for her to the point that I’m tense when she’s involved in a fight and I hurt when she hurts. The world building that Estep has created in so rich in details and her writing draws you in from the first page. Besides characters that you really care about, the pacing of the books is perfect and never lags. There is always something going on, either solving mysteries or fighting battles.Logan, hot spartan boy, defends Gwen when she is arrested, going so far as to rally her friends to protect her around the campus. I totally love Logan. He’s still warring with his feelings regarding his mom and sister’s death and his dad’s indifference to him yet he never stops trying to be a better person. After waiting for him to make the moves on Gwen in the last three books, I felt the tenderness of their romance and it was sweet.Then, I promptly had my heart ripped out which is exactly what the author intended. These characters are so loyal that they always do what is RIGHT to the hurting each other if it’s required. Sigh.Besides the main characters, Estep has also created secondary characters that you know and love such as Gwen’s steadfast friends, her Grandmother, her talking sword, Vic, and a playful wolfpup, Nyx.Warning: Mature references, fighting scenes

      Crimson Frost…ok, so I’m officially HOOKED!I was a few pages into Crimson Frost and realized that as I owned First Frost and A Touch of Frost, it would be smarter to read these first. In pursuit of the Mythos Academy story I jumped online and obtained Kiss of Frost and Dark Frost, and settled in for a two day marathon to bring me up to speed. I'm glad I did because I just don't think I would have appreciated Gwen 'gypsy girl' and the Crimson Frost episode as much without having the back story. Maybe like me, future fellow readers will also zip online and beg, borrow or buy the previous titles. Just a long hand way of saying I am really glad I started the life of Gwen from the beginning and that I definitely enjoyed this series! Crimson Frost maintains the integrity of the previous books where Gwen, the flawed, feisty yet sensitive lead character, chooses her destiny despite the odds. She gains new friends at Mythos Academy, (a school for students from mythological warrior casts including Spartans and Valkyries). The students at Mythos are wealthy and indulged for reasons Gwen occasionally comments upon. Gwen's magical gift is that of psychometry, of touching people and objects and knowing their full story, a mostly harrowing experience. Of course she is at odds with the hierarchy, various groups of fellow students, and is mostly always blamed for problems not of her doing. Gwen and her friends including the lovely Logan brutally clash with the reapers of the god Loki in this age old fight of good against evil. But the unassuming Champion of Nike battles through at great personal cost balanced by friendship and love. The girl without friends wins them the hard way. I enjoy the backchat that happens between her and her sword Vic, her relationships and her commentaries on the staff and students of Mythos. Her more insightful comments on the meaning and use of free will give an added depth to her personality. This series is a marvelous read. Crimson Frost certainly continues the tradition. And yes I cried too!I have now joined the plethora of fans waiting for Midnight Frost to be released.A Netgalley ARC

Take an orphan (a girl this time), reveal a magical heritage that is responsible for the death of her parent, ship her off to a magical boarding school, give her an inexplicably hostile teacher as well as a sage and cryptic headmaster, and make her integral to plot to return an evil power to the world. There are even Death Eater equivalents known as Reapers. As this series has progressed, the Potter similarities have become more and more transparent. But try as it might, Mythos Academy is no Harry Potter.Initially, Gwen’s touch magic and her ingenious way of using her ability to make a few bucks and solve a few mysteries was intriguing. But since the strong debut, the books have shifted further away from that Gwen to one who spends the entire beginning of the book degrading and criticizing every single thing about herself from her appearance, her shabby clothes, her personality, her intelligence, her physical capabilities, and on and on. After reading about what a worthless moron she claimed to be, it was hard not to agree with her.As far as the actual plot goes, Gwen gets put on trial for her past ‘crimes’ and ends up recounting all the major events from the series. It’s basically the equivalent of a clip-show until the end. My overall enjoyment of the Mythos Academy series has declined steadily since the debut, but after CRIMSON FROST, I’m going to request a transfer to another school and take a pass on MIDNIGHT FROST when it releases in August 2013.Sexual Content:Kissing

      This is the fourth book in the Mythos Academy series. The fifth book will be titled, Midnight Frost, and is scheduled for an August 2013 release. I believe Estep is contracted for 6 books in this series. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. The book starts a bit slow, but really gained momentum by the end.Gwen is accused of helping the Reapers by the Protectorate. She is forced to go on trial to defend against these allegations. Her friends know that the charges are bogus, but the Protectorate is certain that she is the one who freed Loki. Strangely enough the statues around campus seem to be on Gwen’s side. This was a very good installment in this series, although not the best of the series. Right away Gwen is accused by the Protectorate of being a Reaper and releasing Loki. She spends a good portion of the book being bullied, ostracized, and basically just made to feel totally awful. As a result in the first half of the book there is very little action and a lot of Gwen trying to figure out how to clear her name. The second half of the book is non-stop action and impossible to put down. This book really put Gwen through a lot; she's already gone through so much that my heart just broke for her in this book. The best thing is that now she has her friends and Logan to support and back her up.Gwen does grow as a character. She’s learned to contain her temper and work through her problems. She acts very maturely throughout the book, at times I thought she was a bit too compassionate and forgiving given what she is being forced to go through. I enjoyed watching her learn more about her powers and watching her accept the support and love of those around her.We see a lot more of Vic in this book, he is the most awesome talking sword ever. We also see all of the Gwen’s steadfast friends, although they are in the background for this book. There is a new addition to the cast of characters in a love interest for Oliver/guard for Gwen. He made a great addition to the series as well.I continue to enjoy how mythology is woven into this world. Mythology really comes to the forefront with Loki free and Gwen continuing as Nike’s champion. We delve deeper into mythology in this book than in any other in the series and I really loved it.The book ends at a bit of a cliffhanger and I am dying to know what will happen in the next book. Overall this is a very well written installment in the series. The characters are excellent and we delve deeper than ever into the mythology that makes up Gwen’s world. My only complaint is that the pace of the first half of this book was slower than other books in the series. The book was still engaging and hard to put down. I can’t wait to see what happens in Midnight Frost. This whole series is highly recommended to fans of urban fantasy, especially fans of YA urban fantasy.
