Author

Jane Haddam

Jane Haddam (1951–2019) was an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988).   Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s later novels include Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

Disappointing--supposedly an award finalist but 6-7 chapters in all we had was a missing woman and some security camera tampering. Also no sympathetic characters. I had to force myself to keep reading.

Waldorf Pines is a gated community in the suburbs of Philadelphia -- and those who live in its expensive, over-the-top homes believe themselves to be part of the elite. So when two of its residents – a troubled young man and the flamboyant wife of a wealthy misfit -- die on the same day in the same place, one drowned and the other consumed by fire, it’s a shock. The local police chief (who only aspires to be as good a lawman as Barney Fife) calls in Gregor Demarkian to solve the case. Michael Platte, the drowning victim, and Martha Heydrich, whose body was burned beyond recognition, had been seen together and had been rumored to be having an affair. But when officials determine the burnt body could not have been Martha’s, they struggle to find out who the victim was and where Martha has disappeared to. Enter Gregor Demarkian, retired FBI agent and current police consultant. He quickly determines that all the suspects and witnesses are hiding something. And behind the scenes in Waldorf Pines, all is not as it appears. In the early days of this series (27 or so books ago), I read every one of the Gregory Demarkian mysteries as they came out. I took a long vacation and am now just getting back to them. They’re solidly written, intricately plotted and quick reads. What’s not to like?

Retired FBI agent Gregor Demarkian is called in to consult on a double homicide at the weatlhy Waldrof Pines residences. The police have arrested the wrong man and want to appease the snobby residents who all have secrets to hide by hushing bad publicity. It was easy to guess the identity of the second murder victim but the reveal of the murderer was a surprise at the end.
