About this audiobook
When Dr. Alan Gregory's good friend Peter Arvin is found bloody and dying on the stage of a Colorado theatre, suspicion soars that he has become the second victim of a killer whose first prey was discovered amid the elaborate scenery of the road company's production of the Broadway show Miss Saigon. Alan is immediately asked to respond to two pleas for help: one from the police, who would like a psychological profile of the murderer, and one from Peter's widow, who is desperate to know the meaning of her dead husband's secrets.
As Alan struggles to cope with the complexities of his new marriage and the shattering personal consequences of his friend's murder, provocative clues lead him down a trail that winds from the Front Range of the Rockies to the casinos of the Colorado high country and finally to the grandeur outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
His journey takes him deep into Peter's past and inevitably toward the discovery of harrowing truths about the human heart - about the struggle for survival and the quest for forgiveness - that seem always just out of his reach, obscured by the smoke of a long-forgotten fire.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A solid Stephen White.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another thriller in the Dr Alan Gregory series. He practices psychology in Boulder and manages to get involved in murder cases at the request of his friend, Sam Purdy. Good stories that keep you interested to the last page.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is another in the Alan Gregory series set in Boulder, Colorado. I really like this series and have several more yet to read. In this one Alan's next door neighbor and friend Peter is found tortured on the stage of a theater. He's the second theater murder in the area recently.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Alan Gregory is a psychologist in Boulder Colorado. He has never done any profiling work but when his friend Peter Arvin is murdered on stage in a deserted theatre and it seems like it could be the work of a serial killer he is persuaded to help the homicide detective.Peter Arvin was Alan's next door neighbour but after he is killed Alan realizes he doesn't know all that much about him. So, while trying to help solve the murder, he also investigates Peter's life. Peter's widow instigates this because she needs to know if she and her son are welcome in Peter's home town and his family. Adrienne Arvin is a busy doctor and she continues working at top speed even after Peter's murder. Another man was brutally killed in a theatre in Denver after a showing of Miss Saigon before Peter's murder and there are many similarities so some of the homicide investigators are convinced they are looking at a serial murder. Alan isn't so convinced because there are also some differences between the murders that point to a different person committing them. Then a third man is killed in a theatre in another Colorado town and suddenly it looks like a serial killer is on the loose.I really liked Alan Gregory and his DA wife, Lauren. They haven't been married long but they seem to have a great relationship. Lauren has MS which is mostly in remission but she gets tired easily. Alan is solicitous of her but never babies her. They discuss the case and Lauren's insight is valuable to Alan.I also like the descriptions of the countryside that White gives. Colorado is a beautiful state and I've visited some of the places described in the book but now I want to go back.
