About this audiobook

Imprisoned by memories, Claudia Campbell lives each day in the shadow of a ten-year-old murder. Who can set her free?

On the way home from a football game, a decade earlier, a masked gunman opened fire on a Texas school bus.  Cheerleading coach B.J. Remington was killed, but her murderer was never found. Claudia, who had a close friendship with the young, spirited teacher, constantly relives the anguish of that day, caught in one moment in time. When her husband, the assistant district attorney, becomes determined to uncover the mystery of that tragedy, the secrets buried over the years threaten to tear their family apart.

Officer Casio Hightower will never forget the day his dreams were destroyed. A star quarterback with a promising future, Casio was on top of the world-until one bullet changed everything. He is eager to help Victor Campbell find B.J.'s killer, the man who shot him. Maybe solving the case will help silence the demons driving Casio to hurt the woman he loves.

As the Campbells and Casio teeter on the brink of losing everything, will they be able to discover that what begins at the crossing ends at the cross?

I enjoyed reading this book by Serita Jakes. It was on the heavy side emotionally, dealing with PTSD, murder, lots of heavy emotions throughout the book. Jakes weaves throughout the story the serious consequences of sin and selfishness, how lives are affected by our sins as well as others. It was difficult reading for me at a difficult time in my life, but I don't want to take away from the fact that it was a good read.

This was such an interesting read. The dialog from BJ was a unique viewpoint of the story. It made me think not only about the mystery of what happened that night but also the mystery of dying and entering eternity. The other characters could have used a little more depth but overall I liked the book.

Once I started this book I could not put it down. It was that suspenseful. This is a book written by a Christian writer but it is not the typical Christian fiction. If you are looking for a book where there is a fairytale ending for everyone at the end of the book then this book is not for you. For one couple there was the happy ending but not for others. Book is full of twists and turns. Be sure to stay with the book until the end because you won't be disappointed. I am looking forward to what this writer has in store for the future. Would love to see her write more fiction of this caliber.

On the way home from a high school football game, a masked gunman jumped onto the bus and opened fire, killing the cheerleading coach, BJ Remington, and injuring the star quarterback, Casio Hightower. Ten years later, Casio and his former girlfriend Claudia are still dealing with the aftermath of that terrible night. When Claudia's Assistant District Attorney husband reopens the case, the truth of what happened that night reopens old wounds that have never really healed. This is a good novel portraying characters suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They seem like real people with real problems, which you don't usually find in fictional novels. Casio has anger management problems as well as relationship problems, and Claudia suffers anxiety attacks and flashbacks. These are very real and common symptoms. The opening of each chapter where we hear BJ's dying thoughts are captivating. They may be the best part of the book. It held my attention right up until the end, and then somehow it fell flat. The solution was predictable and it seemed that most of it was wrapped up off-stage, if you will. But all in all, it was a good read, and I thought it was nice that at the end there was information regarding PTSD.4 starsDisclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group book review bloggers program . A difficult story to tell; tragedy, murder, secrets, abuse and PTSD. The author did a good job of creating a story with such mystery that I couldn't figure it out until the very end. Claudia Campbell is haunted by memories of a 10 year old murder she witnessed while on the bus going home from a football game. In front of her eyes her teacher was shot and she eventually died. Now her husband is trying to solve this 10 year old mystery of who shot this person. I like how the back cover states, " . . . the Campbells . . . teeter on the brink of losing everything, will they be able to discover that what begins at the crossing ends at the cross?" A hard story to read because of the brokenness in so many people's lives.

I loved this book!!!!!!!!! I can usually figure out the outcome of the books before they are done but I couldn't figure this one out. Lets just say that the ending totally shocked me and I didn't see the end coming. This book also held my interest and ended up being a book that I didn't want to put down. I really want to read more books by this author because her writing is amazing and she does such a great job describing things in her book. Most of the mysteries/thrillers that I have tend to get gross but this book didn't. It still kept me interested even though it wasn't super gross.

If you like mysteries then you will love this book!

After 10 years Claudia is still haunted by the night she watched as her best friend was murdered and unable to do anything. The murder has gone unsolved for so long, when Claudia’s husband, Victor, decides to reopen the case in hopes of bringing Claudia some closure the nightmares and panic attacks return full force. Now that the case has been reopened and new evidence has come forward there is no way of stopping now. The case is tearing apart Claudia and Victor’s marriage, will Victor be able to solve the case and be able to pull his family back together? The Crossing could be a great story, the idea and storyline pull you into the lives of those affected by the murder and how some of the students are still trying to cope after ten years. Jakes has a good start to what could be a great story; however, the story comes off as very surface level and does not really dive into the characters and the problems they are facing on a deeper level. The issues that develop throughout the book are solved very easily and fall into place a little too neatly. The summary on the back of the book is also slightly misleading, this book could be great if Jakes would take it to the next level and really delve into the characters and what makes them tick as well as what causes some of the relationships to be so strained. Reading a book where the characters have many situations to overcome and in the end fall perfectly into place seems unrealistic and avoids showing the growth of each character.I received this book complimentary from Waterbrook Multnomah for an honest review. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

The Crossing was a fast-paced mystery and a quick read. The story begins with the murder of a teacher on a school bus full of students after leaving a football game. Jakes tells the story through the eyes of the dying teacher and those that witnessed first hand the gunman's destruction. As BJ Remington lies on the school bus floor, her thoughts pulse through the story like a fading heartbeat. When the local ADA, Victor Campbell reopens the unsolved mystery 10 years later, those that are witness to the event are forever changed, even his wife Claudia who was BJ's best friend. Each character is dealing with their own trauma, their own failures and ghosts of the past. Will finding the identify of the killer heal their hearts or can they ever really let go of all the pain? Jakes' tells the story well, each chapter spilling over into the next, making it hard to put down. The most fascinating part was being inside the head (and heart) of the dying teacher – following her through her regrets, memories and her wavering faith. Each character deals with their own demons, and in the end their faith just may pull them through and make them whole again. The Crossing By Serita JakesA school bus, loaded with highschool kids heading home after an evening game, anxious to get something to eat and call it a day.. BJ Remington cheerleading coach shot by an unknown masked assailant when the bus stops at a railroad crossing in a small town in Texas. The secret she carries with her has determined the awful fate of that night that never seems to end for Claudia a student and a close friend of hers and Casio a football player and proposed hero in the middle of the chaos. Throughout the story BJ talks to us as she lay there dying covered in blood trying to connect with the loved ones by her side. Trying to make amends. Trying to grasp at what is important now that only seconds remain. Wishing, wondering if things could have been different if only she’d had made a different choice. As a result of that fateful night, Claudia and Casio struggle throughout there lives. Claudia with her marriage to a district attorney Vic and Casio with his girlfriend Harper and his father an ex-cop who dropped the investigation ten years earlier. Vic and Casio hook up together to try to solve the murder of BJ and to bring in the killer in order to put an end to the nightmare for Claudia and Casio. Opening up the case that had been closed for over ten years turns out to be more than they bargain for. Secrets unfold, skeletons are uncovered and those who you would least expect become suspect to a horrendous crime. All the characters in the book are intertwined to a point that proves that each decision we make however small can have a massive effect on more people than we think. What an excellent example of how complicated our lives can become when we choose to live for ourselves and neglect to care about the feelings of our neighbors.
