About this audiobook

“In a word: Brilliant….It left me breathless and awed….Pure exhilaration from the first page to the last.”
—James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of Altar of Eden

“WOW! Double Wow!...Ghost Country by Patrick Lee will make Asimov and Heinlein cheer with the angels. The techno-thriller meets Sci-Fi, and the result is mind-blowing.”
—Stephen Coonts, New York Times bestselling author of Disciple

Patrick Lee reinvented and revitalized the contemporary thriller with his extraordinary debut The Breach (“Audacious and terrifying” —Lee Child). Now his conflicted ex-cop/ex-con hero Travis Chase is back in the breathtaking follow-up Ghost Country. Both Michael Crichton and Dean Koontz fans, X-Files aficionados and devotees of FOX TV’s Fringe, will be blown away by Lee’s Ghost Country—a nightmarish tale of a nefarious plot unleashed at the highest levels of government that will bring about the end of everything in a matter of a few short months.

I’m always up for a time-traveling near-apocalyptic dystopia. I was a little distracted by a recurring high-pitched noise in the narration, but the book was engaging enough to ignore it to the end.

I loved this book. Apart from being a great fast-paced thriller, it has a touch of romance too.
From the first book: some thirty years ago something like a portal opened and the scientists gave it a name - the Breach. Every now and then various objects come through it. Some of them are bad and some are good. Tangent, a secret organization, was created to collect and analyse those objects. This book deals with an object which shows a future (deliberate use of a). Paige went to show the object to the president and to tell him a horrible thing they have learned from it. Her group was killed and she was captured. Bethany, a girl Paige called for help. This is short summary of the action part. It is really fast. They don't get a moment of piece.
Now for the romance part. You get they fell in love in the first book. You get the reason why Travis left. There is no drama, no dumb love triangles. Now, the following are not exactly spoilers. They are more moments I loved regarding the romance.
Travis finds out some things in the future which help him decide to tell Paige the reason he left. In the third book he is probably back.
I loved how they didn't have to say more than necessary. Two examples:
“I understand that there’s something you really, really cannot tell me,” she said. “And I understand that it has nothing to do with how you feel about me. Because I know how you feel about me. Yesterday morning, when I stepped out of Finn’s office onto that girder and saw you standing five feet away, it didn’t surprise me in the least. I hadn’t expected it—but when I saw you, it seemed like the most normal thing in the world that you’d be standing there. That you’d be there for me. So I know. And I understand . . . even if I don’t understand. ..."
And another, even more heartbreaking, is when he decides to stay and give Bethany and Paige enough time to get away:
“The seconds drew out again. Then he felt one of Paige’s hands on his face. Her fingers tracing its contours. The closest she could get to a last look at him.
“Be there,” she said, and then her hand fell away."

I know this is s thriller and the main focus is not what happens between these two, but that is the exact reason I loved those crumbs we got.

Not a bad story, but there’s a constant squeaking noise in the audio background that is incredibly annoying.

The book was fine, but the recording has high pitched “pops” often that made it very hard to listen to. I was able to adjust the treble down in to help, but very annoying overall and I’m hopeful the third book doesn’t have this problem!

The story was getting interesting but there was an issue with the recording. There was a high pitched whistle throughout. At first I thought is was coming from the reader, but it didn’t seem to coincide with any particular word or speech form. In the end it was too distracting to finish.

Good, but I found it occasionally kinda hard to follow.

This recording seems to have many audio errors that sound like feedback or small squeak/squeeze sounds.

The story seems good so far but I will have to stop listening soon, the recording quality because of the distraction and annoyance from the bad recording.

This is the second book by Patrick Lee following on from the breach. I found it enjoyable but at the same time it lacks detail. If I was to use the analogy of film and television and this reads as a television episode rather than a full blown movie. Having said that I found it an enjoyable although quick read.

While Ghost Country was an enjoyable read, it lacked the originality and punch of the first book in the series, The Breach. The book could have had a bit more “fizz”. There is enough action, but the pace just feels the same throughout – like a jog. It never really slows down or ramps up. This is a subjective point, though, and some may disagree with me on that point.

The storyline was edited tighter than the first book and made for pleasant and easy reading. It is a fascinating world that Patrick Lee has created. While I am not fond of books set in a dystopian world, this somehow felt different. The idea of time travelling remains an interesting one, and the book handles it quite nicely, albeit a bit simplistically.

In the end, I always evaluate a book wondering whether I want to read the next book in the series. With Ghost Country, I find that I do. The final pages felt a bit rushed, but hopefully, the final book of the series, Deep Sky, will bring some clarity on a few minor details.

The narrator, Jeff Gurner, did a good job, although I don't particularly enjoy his Travis Chase voice. It sounds too much like "Me Tarzan, you Jane". Other than that, he is really great.

Non-stop action that picks up where The Breach left off. Once again the fate of the world is doomed unless Travis can put an end to the people hell bent on destroying us all.

Three weeks ago I read the first of the Travis Chase novels (The Breach) and in my review, I said that I would not be continuing with the series. But I lied. I’ve now completed the second book, which is just as silly as the first. I nearly wrote that it had a lower body count compared to the thousands killed in the first book, but then I remembered that Ghost Country actually features the wiping out of the whole of humanity, so I may have been wrong about that. Picture a cross between the Jack Reacher novels and the Back to the Future movies and you have an idea what these books will be like. And I absolutely, positively promise not to read the third and final volume of the trilogy.

Getting the main character 'back in the game' is a bit static, but it gets through that bit quick. Airport read.

A fun page-turning mix of political action thriller and science fiction. The science fiction is basically magic, but the action thriller protagonists deal with discovering and exploring magic about as realistically as action thriller protagonists can. I've not read the prequel, "The Breach", but the reader can work out the context of the story pretty well.

At the beginning of the book, the Breach, an odd, alien doorway that sends technology through to our world, sends a time portal. In it, Tangent, a secret government agency tasked with investigating unusual activities, notices the "when" this device projects shows a devastated America. More troublesome still, it appears as though whatever happens, do so within just a few short months from now.Travis Chase, who has since quit Tangent, is called back into duty as his former lover and Tangent leader Paige Campbell, is abducted."Ghost Country" is a relatively fast-paced sci-fi thriller that's good for a quick beach read. It offers some harrowing set pieces along with some political treachery.

Ghost Country picks up 2 years after The Breach and continues at the same level of excellence. Tangent has discovered a new relic from the breach that gives a glimpse into a future where a catastrophe has taken place. When they approach the President for help they are attacked and Paige is kidnapped along with the relic, before being taken she manages to make a single phone call instructing her offsider to flee with the other relic and contact Travis Chase. From here it's a near non stop ride of both thrills and wonderment. Really enjoyed the book and it certainly draws you in and keeps you captivated.

I really enjoyed this book. I didn't realize there was one before so I will need to backtrack. But it is an interesting concept. It wouldn't surprise me if someone was crazy enough to come up with a plan to destroy the world. The time travel is also something I'm interested in. Are there really ways to go into the future and see what is happening. And if you do go into the future, if you change things in the present to try to change what you saw, will it really change the future? A fast paced book that pulls you into the story.

Sure you can jump ahead in time ... but what are you going to do about what you find in the future? Plot twists, jumps forward and backward in time ... all add up to good fun. Be sure to read The Breach first or you'll be lost.

Please Note: I read and reviewed this book Feb. 2011 from a copy I received from the Amazon Vine program. My Synopsis: This book is the sequel to The Breach. After the events in that book, Travis Chase has left Tangent in order to try to prevent future events that were predicted in The Breach. However, when events collude to cause Bethany Stewart - a member of Tangent - to call Chase back to help, he comes. She shows him a new Entity that recently came through the Breach - this one punches a hole in time to a specific point in the future. The future shown is horrific - there are no people left; the wilderness is overrunning the cities. And then there are the bones ... lots of bones. What happened to cause this future? How can they prevent it?My Recommendation: With its nonstop action, this book is perfect for adrenalin junkies. Like The Breach, Ghost Country combines the best of thriller and science fiction into a unique style that is sure to please a wide variety of readers. This is a "don't miss"! I highly recommend it.

I wish Goodreads did .5 ratings, because this is a solid 3.5. Page-turny, exciting, not particularly challenging sci-fi. Definitely a holiday book. I read this without having read The Breach, and it didn't demand too much prior knowledge.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. The sense of discovery about the Breach was gone, and it didn't have to be. The Breach is such a fascinating idea, and in this book it gets short shrift, as the story purposely keeps the Breach in the background. What we do learn about it is very interesting, and the best parts of the story revolve around this information.Mostly there is lot of running around in this installment with not a lot of important stuff happening. Sure, they go here and there and do things, but it's mostly with very little consequence. We are introduced to a major new character, but otherwise, little changes. In fact, things almost change at the end, but the reader is forced to wait for the next book to see the outcome of Travis Chase's actions. In other words, it ends on a cliff hanger of the character development sort.Lee's craft work is good. The dialogue is decent, the characters stay in tune with the first book, and the action scenes are clear. I just wish something had happened in the book. The bad guy is okay, but there are actually two bad guys and we only get exposed to one of them, so the other one must show up in some later book. Lee's writing and what little information we get about the Breach is what keeps this from being a total wash.

A otherworldy entity opens a door to a tragic future in this second of a series of books by Patrick Lee. I hadn't read the first book, and was a bit confused but quickly got up to speed on the story behind the secret "breach". A fast paced read where scientists race between the present and future to try to forestall a move that will cause the End of the World. Good characterization and the edge of your seat adventure let me finish this in one sitting. I'll have to go back and read the first book by Patrick Lee - The Breach.

I typically read futuristic science fiction, but was intrigued by the book's description while reading through the early reviewer list a few months ago. At the time, I hadn't read the first book (The Breach), but decided to give it a go anyway, and I was not disappointed.I enjoy the idea the author expounds upon in this novel, with "artifacts" appearing regularly through a breach in space/time. It's an idea that can go everywhere, and spawn a huge series if so desired. There is obviously some history I missed out on (originally), but it doesn't affect the reading experience. I had fun reading it, and wanted more. I bought the first book and read that as well. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys spy/thriller/scifi novels.
