      Jace is still stuck in the alternative universe and she is busier than anyone there with werewolves and vampires going insane. I would give four stars if I were really into comics. Her new case is all about banned comics, superheroes and villains and your the story doesn't have a single peaceful moment. 3.5 stars.

      Good second book in the series. The series definitely is not afraid to if not change the rules, push the rules. At this point I appreciate that the author is unafraid to not conform to some sort of easy formula.

      Audio- 3.7 stars. This second book in the series was better than the first. There was more of a mystery, more action and more focus. I still don't care the the narrator. The third book I bought in print.
      Jace is still human, still in this alternate universe and still trying to solve a case to get home. She is struggling along when big boss calls her to follow up on another case. This case is hitting buttons and will open some new and deadly doors to her. One of her friends will be lost, a new life arrives and some truths are finally told. She still treats David like he has no feelings, this irritates me,big time.
      I keep looking for a romantic liaison, there are some really interesting choices here but it's not happening, at least not yet. The doctor were, the older and distant vamp, the steady and witty golum. The one character I really want to have a romantic trust doesn't have the equipment for it. I am thinking that relationship will not go anywhere, dang it ! Why write a character with no equipment ?

      This one worked for me in a way book one didn't. Jace isn't as angry, she's not overtly being held hostage, and the relationships she started in book one really start to gel. Her banter with Charlie in particular was fantastic, and the twist with Dr. Pete was both unexpected and titillating.

      I grew up on comics but this was simply a bit much. My eyes started to cross by the last page and I don't think it was the muscle relaxer.

      The title is as irreverent as the heroine. The plot gets really twisted trying to follow the bad guy. But he is insane. But so far, there really does not seem to have been anything to justify pulling Jace from the other side.

      Death Blows by DD Barant is the second book in The Bloodhound Files. If you are not familiar with the series, it is a good, fun, urban fantasy with a twist: monsters (such as vampires, werewolves, and golems) exist in alternative worlds, and the heroine, Jace, is pulled into one of those worlds. Jace has been deliberately brought into the alternate universe because of her skills. She is a serial killer profiler and the alternate universe needs her expertise to solve a case. It is a very well done cross-over of two of my favorite genres (detective/profiler and urban fantasy). The combination makes the story unique and fresh, and the characters make the story captivating. The heroine, Jace, is a complex character; she is somewhat jaded, irreverent, and sarcastic. She lives to work and deals with her stressful job by laughing it off. She doesn't have much of a social life since a very acrimonious & painful split with her boyfriend. She has a hard time adjusting to being uprooted from her universe and dropped into another one, but gets caught up in the case and begins to adapt. She is helped by a vampire colleague Gretchen, a Golem bodyguard Charlie (who is a wonderful character and a perfect balance to Jace), and the dishy werewolf Dr. Pete. The supporting cast are all complex & authentic characters. Jace herself is completely believable, likeable, and fun -- she struck me as a cross between Kate Daniels and Clarice Starling. The world-building is detailed, consistent; the author has created a very interesting world in which I hope to spend more time.In book two, Jace continues to hunt for Aristotle Stoker, a human rights advocate / serial killer who preys on vampires and werewolves. In addition, she is pulled into a bizarre case where victims are posed as comic book heroes (from her world?) after death. Good fun.

      An excellent follow up to Dying Bites! The plot, the world building, and the characters continue to be awesome. I like how the author re-imagines comic books as objects of magical potency, putting an interesting twist on the murder mystery. We also get to see Jace and the supporting cast grow into complex, multilayered characters whom you can’t help but love. An unexpected twist at the end actually made me tear up. Overall, it’s a fun, entertaining story, and I can’t wait to read the next book, Killing Rocks.

      Enjoyable but somewhat mindless follow-up to Dying Bites. The comic book references make this one like the Lovecraft and weird fiction references make the previous.
