About this audiobook

Readers have long flocked to the works of LaVyrle Spencer, one of America's most cherished storytellers. From The Fulfillment to Morning Glory to Then Came Heaven, her touching, emotionally charged novels have examined love in all its forms. In Separate Beds, two attractive, headstrong people meet - and fireworks ensue.

Catherine Anderson and Clay Forrester come from two completely different worlds, but one blind date leaves them forever linked. Clay, a handsome law student, and Catherine, a serious, bookish undergrad, experience an evening they will never forget. Fortified by the beauty of the night, as well as a bottle of wine, they share a night together. A few short months later, Catherine discovers she's pregnant. They agree to a marriage of convenience, an arrangement that suits them both - until they begin to fall in love.

Moving and deeply affecting, Separate Beds is a celebration of the healing power of love.

I was feeling nostalgic this week and decided to reread this story. I originally read Separate Beds in 1997. It is interesting to read a book written in the 80's, that you first read in the 90's, and then reread in 2013. I found that even though my perspective with age has changed, I still enjoyed the story and that the hero still frustrated me. I especially got a laugh out of the mannerisms and fashion from the 80's! The tuxedo shirts (ruffled and apricot colored) are a great example of a good giggle!I understand that LaVyrle Spencer did not write the most thought provoking books, but I cannot help but thoroughly enjoy her stories. Maybe it is the nostalgia from my childhood years of reading, but LaVyrle Spencer's stories are ones I still love and cherish. So, this was a "what the heck" reread that I still enjoyed. It was a nice way to spend a rainy day.

It is set in the 1980's, but the way the characters behave and the story line makes it seem like the 1960's. It is a pretty simple story with simple people. There was a lot of both characters running hot and cold for each other. Playing games with one another. It doesn't get a place on my bookshelf as I don't need to read it again.

This is a contemporary novel, but since it was written in the mid-80's, it's obviously dated. Yet, it read less "dated" and more 20th century historical romance. It's funny for me to think of the 80's as being fodder for a historical romance, but that's exactly how this book felt the entire time I was reading it. It should be re-classified as such. Anyway, it was an entertaining read and I could see the appeal of her stories. She writes with great detail and has wonderful story/relationship development. My first by Spencer, but I've had many rec'd to me over the years and will definitely be reading more

Interesting, you can tell it was written before alcohol was considered bad for pregnancy! I appreciated the fact there were no F... bombs.

Hearts and flowers. Tasty and compulsive hearts and flowers.I was awake until 2 am last night because I had to know how it ended, couldn't stop reading! The plot: Clay (drooling) and Catherine have a one night stand, and she gets pregnant. They come from different backgrounds, Clay is sophisticated, he comes from a wealthy family and he's got a model steady girlfriend.Cathy is a hardened person because of the circumstances, her drunken father beats her and her mom continually, while she struggles to keep emotionally safe from all the mess she sees at home. She becomes a cold and unemotional person, she doesn't trust anybody. Until she meets Clay and his family, who give her reasons to start believing that life might be worth it after all.The only thing that bothered me about the story is that Clay and Cat took sooo long to talk straight to each other. At the beginning, Clay seemed to go for it, he tried to make the best of their situation, while Cat was so unsure and afraid, keeping him at arm's length until it was frustrating. And then, all of a sudden, it was the other way around. Cathy was centred, self sobered and he became a bunch of nerves, unsure of his feelings when it had been obvious throughout all the book that he felt something for Cat.It kept me hanging until the very end!Anyway, maybe it took too long, but I was so hooked I couldn't stop reading, and that only means the book is engaging.Well done Mrs. Spencer, maybe the best I've read by you so far!
