This is supposedly a mystery though really most of the book was about the main character Maxie hanging out with her friends. The first murder doesn't occur until half way through the listen. And, of course, the do-er doesn't appear until the book is mostly complete. How can one speculate about who done it if the person hasn't been exposed. I liked the book and the series but kept wondering if there was more to it?

Nice cozy mystery. Get to know some of Maxie's neighbors and friends. She makes some annoying rookie mistakes, though.

Maxie and Stretch decide to stay in Homer, Alaska for their winter instead of traveling. While on a walk they meet a drifty who was on the friendly side and offer him a ride as it begins to rain. Later Maxie invites him to a dinner party for her son who is visiting from Oregon. Later the man, John Walker, is found dead of an apparent suicide. If you ever read any if the Maxie and Stretch books, you know nothing is as it seems. So begins Maxie on another investigation of the mysterious John Walker.

I chose this book for a silly reason. It has a dachshund in the story, and I love dachshunds. However I didn't like this story too much. I didn't like the repetivness that the character relayed the story to each new person in the book. I stuck this book out till the end, although now I wish I had quit sooner and read something better.

I had mixed but mostly negative impressions. The retirement lifestyle described is idyllic and I read along wondering if there were any advice for me in it. But the plotting of the mystery was poor and the emotional reactions of the heroine didn't ring true. The author took more care handling the plot line of her son's engagement than the solving of two ruthless murders. It seemed almost disrespectful.
