It will be interesting to see how time treats this book - for it's setting and milieux are anchored in time and place in a fairly concrete way while its variety of narrative perspective and internal and heard voices have a more contemporary feel than the story's setting which makes it more like speculative fiction than character fiction, or murder mystery-fiction, or f$%ked up
family fiction, or dystopic suburbia mad housewives fiction.

And, once you begin to accept it that way - as an amalgam of the known and expected combined with freshness and an exploration of the possible for books, for characters, for readers, it becomes a one of a kind read .

On her way home from school on a snowy December day in 1973, 14-year-old Susie Salmon (like the fish") is lured into a makeshift underground den in a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer--Wow! The other side of a mystery/suspense/thriller ... the victim, her family and friends trying to understand and accept her death.

I avoided reading this book for years because of it's subject matter. A 14 year old girl is raped and murdered in an underground bunker in a cornfield near her home. She is the narrator of the story. A little over a year ago I watched the film based on the book. It's a beautiful, imaginative film about love and grief. I decided then that I would read the book. I didn't like the book as much as the movie, but, it was still pretty good, except the ending. This is the story of a murdered girl who watches her family and friends process losing her. It is the story of how her family, particularly her father and sister, deal with their grief and move on, or not.

I was so disappointed in the book, yes I read it because of the movie and I have to say, after reading it I didn't want to see the movie. It just felt like it goes on and on and nothing happens. I actually did end up watching the movie, a first for me, the movie was better than the book, not much better however.

You know the book that is so compelling that you find yourself IN it? When you feel everything the MC is feeling? Well, that's what The Lovely Bones is like!

I guess that's the best way to describe it :)

I have tried to read this twice but haven't made it past the first 40 pages. I just can't get into this book.

This was the first novel I read by Sebold, and it took my breath away-- literally. The point of view of this novel was excellently done, and the story itself was truly amazing. I feel that Sebold told a story most people who die prematurely long to tell from beyond the grave; how it happened. Most who die young have much left that is unsaid that they wish to share, but cannot because there is no way to communicate. In The Lovely Bones Sebold crosses the barrier between life and death, allowing the narrator to tell a story from her point of view in Heaven.

This was sooooo sad. Like heartbreaking sad. I usually don't go for these kind of books but it was recommended to me so I had to grab it.

The ending could have been done a bit better, in my opinion and there were a few parts throughout the book where I just had to take a break or I wouldn't finish.

For the most part though, it was very easy to read and the story flowed quite well. A bit repetitive sometimes, but what do you expect from a book narrated by a dead 14 year old girl, lol.

4 solid stars from me and I look forward to reading more from the author.

I found that this book was not only difficult to follow, but it was written with many different ongoing plots. The main theme (Susie being in heaven trying to deal with her not being able to help her grieving family and the apprehension of her rapist and killer) was present, but only amongst several other twisted plots. It was all over the place.

Very well written. I cried through the first quarter, as it is a family's life documented through the eyes of their dead daughter.

You had me until the main character comes back to "life." I know the idea of using this moment to experience true love was supposed to healing, I found it insensitive because she could have told her family she was OK. In the end, I found the lead character selfish.

absolutely wonderful; great use of characters but more importantly the story line was awesome; painted a great picture; very unique outlook on Heaven and love and relationships; loved the animals being there as well!!!!

I've watched the movie, as well as read the book and have yet to see what made this title so popular. I kept reading & waiting for a twist in the plot, or a big event to unfold, and was very disappointed when I reached the final page and nothing further presented itself.

Susie Salmon, was raped and murdered in 1973 and now resides in her heaven; yet, her voice contains none of the bitterness one would expect. She is able to see into the lives of those who touched her in life and death. At times wistful - for she will never be able to experience growing up - and others matter-of-fact, Susie witnesses the changes and growth within her family and small circle of friends. Her story is not one about death, but about loss and affirming life in its face, about moving on not only for those she left behind but for herself.

This story is compassionately told, and the reader quickly feels close to Susie and her family. All of the characters in this small town are interesting and add their own flavor to this intriguing story. Although there's a sad undertone throughout, there are also hints of humor, hope, and love. Beautiful, enchanting, disturbing and very unique.

This book was great. There was a lot of anticipation for catching Susie's killer. I was a little disappointed with the outcome of that. There was a lot of sadness in the book. It was interesting to see how people coped with loss in their own ways. I didn't really like the scene where Susie entered Ruth's body and I wasn't happy with the last chapter of the book, but other wise I really enjoyed this story.
