About this audiobook

The beguiling young sleuth Emma Graham returns.

Martha Grimes returns to her twelve-year-old heroine, Emma Graham, in this suspenseful sequel to the bestselling Belle Ruin. Emma continues her investigation into the strange disappearance of the four- month-old Slade baby from the Belle Ruin Hotel more than twenty years before. The sudden appearance in town of the baby's father, Morris Slade, makes her even more determined to learn the truth. Then a mysterious drifter named Ralph Diggs appears at the Hotel Paradise, looking for work, ingratiating himself with everyone there. Everyone, that is, except Emma.

The perceptive Emma is bound once again to delight fans of the previous books Hotel Paradise, Cold Flat Junction, and Belle Ruin, and certain to win new readers with her intuition and humor.

This books works because of colourfulness of the main character and the quirkiness of residents of rural Maryland.

Gave it 5 stars because I think I've been a bit mean with the stars lately - and I just loved this book. It seems to catch such a deep feeling for life though a focus on quite surface things. I would have loved to spin the book out for weeks, but it was just not possible to stop reading for more than a few hours at a time. This is the fourth book set in Paradise Hotel and only a week covered in each book - should have felt hectic but instead sets a wonderful leisurely pace.

I gave this book 2.5 stars rounded to three. This is definitely a series you have to read in order to understand the plot fully. The main character was cute and age-appropriate. The narrator of the audiobook was awesome. The main problem was that the mystery was never completely resolved. You are left with Emma's impressions of what happened, but are never told completely. I am assuming I would have had a firmer grasp on what happened if I had read the rest of the series so I rounded my vote up instead of down.

Not my favorite Martha Grimes character, but a good read anyway

Emma lives with her family in an aging hotel named The Hotel Paradise. Up on the fourth floor, her great-aunt Aurora holds court, and demands Emma to bring a daily drink to her. Emma's brother is holed up in the barn with his friend, putting together yet another musical production. Her mom is caught up in the day-to-day business of running a small hotel. This means Emma has plenty of time to devote to the 20-year-old mystery of the kidnapped baby. A fearless sleuth, Emma follows clues from one little town to another, asking questions of every person she meets. Emma is a great character--in fact in this series one of Grimes' great talents is the characters she develops. All of them are so true to life that they could almost walk right off the page.I adore Emma and her life, but this title depends too much on the others in the series. It's been years since I read the first, Hotel Paradise, and Cold Flat Junction and Belle Ruin remain unread. It seems that for fullest enjoyment, one would need to read all three of Fadeaway Girl's predecessors, and there's just not time for that right now! I'm putting this one on my "maybe someday" pile!

For those of us who have read the previous Emma Graham books, this book is a nice ending to the mystery of the numerous murders and the baby kidnapping that happened 20 years ago in Cold Flat Junction. For those that have not read an Emma Graham book, this book would be very confusing as there are numerous references to occurrences in previous books. I personally love the intrepid, 12-year-old Emma. She's as smart as a whip. The characters in this little part of world are also very entertaining and very unique. I love Great Aunt Aurora. I'm not sure if we'll see little Emma again now that all has been explained, and that makes me a bit sad. I love Martha Grimes' writing and these books are truly enjoyable. Well done.
