- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5felt like at a curtain call when the actors take their bows at a play that’s left the audience underwhelmed, when everyone’s so impatient getting ready to leave that there’s no standing ovation or 2nd curtain call
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Were these the original cozy mysteries? Maybe. They certainly are cozy! A wealthy bachelor with a luxuriant mustache and his two Siamese cats (one eerily prescient) solve a diabolical double murder in the quaint town of Pickax.
I read a bunch of these books in my teenage years, so catching up with the characters in this particular small town was a little like a literary homecoming, nostalgic and oddly comforting. I could probably listen to most of the series and be perfectly contented with my commute for the next several months. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5not worth a review. These stories are going downhill fast. If it weren't for George Guidall's melifluous tones on the audio, they wouldn't be worth listening to. No plot that I could find, just a patchwork of jumpy pieces. If you haven't read the series go back to the early ones and enjoy.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love these books. They are fun and entertaining and simple and they make me happy. I enjoyed reading this one again. I need to browse my shelves to see if I have any more that I can re-read. Such a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I always enjoy Braun's books as a piece of "mind candy". They are a quick and easy read with engaging characters whose personalities come out through her writing. This particular one isn't one of her best ones; she has jumps in time that are a bit awkward as if she didn't quite have enough to stretch the plot of the book (which is admittedly one of her shorter Cat Who tales).
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Though there was some repetition of facts here and there, I enjoyed the doings of Pickax during their celebration of their 150th year -- except for the loss of a few members of the regular cast. The kitten auction was cute. As usual, Mr. Guidall's narration added to my pleasure. (I've listened to only one book in this series that had another narrator and I didn't like it nearly as much.) I didn't care much for Joie Simmons' cover for Recorded Books' audio of The Cat Who Went Bananas, though it didn't bore me the way the covers for the print versions do. Still, I was glad to see Mr. Geary's cover for this book. The Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell is a nice way to pass the time.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was a short audiobook, only 4 discs. I liked it for the most part, though I thought the ending wrapped up a little too quickly. More details about the whodunnint ending would've made it more interesting.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I enjoyed it, but was a bit lost. Going back to the beginning of the series now--this was #28! I wasn't entirely confused throughout (the author did a great job of quick summation) but there were some allusions that I just didn't get!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I don't think this book has sold the series to me. I loved Koko and Yum Yum and their slightly eccentric owner, but it felt like the book dwelled forever on the happenings in the little town of Pickaxe. When I arrived at page 130 and still almost nothing had happened, I was becomming a bit annoyed.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I gave this book four stars because I like hearing about Qwill, the cats (especially!) and the characters around Pickax. So, these books are fun fluff that are the equivalent of checking in on old friends. But if you are looking for the mystery, you will be very disappointed. It lasts about 15 (?) very short pages. This series (for whatever reason) has morphed into a story about quaint people in a quaint town. But the mystery gets less and less print with each book. If you want mystery, get the earlier books in the series. If you don't mind hearing about small town antics, this should be fluffy fun.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A nice cozy read that any lover of the series will enjoy. Not much suspense in this particular book, in my opinion. But I still enjoyed it. I finished it in under two hours!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not one of her better mysteries. She seemed more inclined to focus on advancing the story of the town rather then solving a murder. In fact, the murder comes late in the book and just glanced over. But all in all... a definite read, especially if you are doing the series as it does advance the whole story arch.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The main thing I enjoy in these books is Koko and Yum Yum. I have a Siamese and many of the characteristics ring true. I also like that the author doesn't force Koko's detective tendencies on the reader. He always acts like a cat, his actions simply trigger Qwill to think. Or is it more?As with several of the later books, I feel they needed better editing. Several repeat passages describing people or places within the book. The mystery was half solved, if solved, then only by a freak source. Of course, the mystery wasn't hidden from the reader, either. Oh well. I really don't read these for anything other than the cats. :)
