This story was very disjointed. I had trouble following any "mystery/murder" plot in this book.

Very weak - almost like a parody of her earlier work with the usual set up > cat senses something odd > murder > solved pattern but I simply didn't care about the person who died as she had never been really introduced as a character, the Koko sensing something odd was never fully explained and the on-off Polly romance becomes even stranger. Saying that, I still read it to the end and I will still enjoy her earlier books but I'm glad I borrowed it not bought it.

I’m a huge fan of these books. This one kind of hurt my opinion. The writing is still great but it treated some of the characters with no regard to push a different storyline.

Another enjoyable book from the The Cat Who series. I don't want to post any spoilers but one of the main characters did something quite surprising (no, not Koko or Yum Yum)...

I usually like this series, but this one had little to no mystery at all. Very repetitious--how many times can you mention cats dancing in the windows or jumping like flying squirrels from the loft. Disposing of Polly Duncan like that? Please! Maybe designed to just sort of "wrap things up," but this was disappointing in the extreme. Time to end this series!

Until CD 3, I was enjoying The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers even while I wished it had been subjected to some prudent editing. It seemed a nice visit with old friends in Moose County. There were only hints that what had seemed a natural death might be... DUN DUN DUUUNNNN... murder. Then there were hints that a longtime supporting character was about to get the old heave-ho. Oh, yes, and in such a manner that I suspect my fellow cat lovers will also feel it no great loss. The other big change was telegraphed more subtly, and it's one I regret more. I was planning on listening to the whole series again, but the second change has me thinking I should put that off.Cat lovers, rest assured that all of the cats are all right.

How disappointing. This book started off well enough with good characterizations and the usual strong sense of place. But the mystery (vaguely hinted at) never comes to fruition. The writing sputters, gazes off distractedly, and then just...ends. No denouement, no explanation, no form or structure. I have loved earlier entries in this series, but I cannot recommend this one. I am sorry.

I listened to this one in my car, and was a little disappointed. I enjoyed the familiar cast of characters, but if I hadn't listened to some of the "Cat Who..." audiobooks in a previous life, I would've been a bit lost. As it was, I thought this story ended a bit abruptly.

Not exactly a mystery but still enjoyable.

Possibly the worst book in the series. Choppy, dull, and sorely lacking in both cats and plot. Not recommended, even for fans. It was a struggle to finish it.

This is the worst Cat Who book and murder mystery that I have ever read. i usually enjoy the series as a light-fun-read, but this book definitely disappointed. Braun seemed more occupied with developing the town that she has created, than developing the murder mystery, its investigation, or even the story's characters. The writing style seemed fragmented and incomplete. In the novel, Braun continually refers to Qwilleran's drawer full of partial idea. This book felt like Braun grabbed a handful from her own drawer and threw them together to make a novel/meet a deadline, or perhaps to just pump out one more Cat Who book for the money. It was almost like reading a rough draft of an outline for a story - an outline which often repeated itself in several places, short thought it is.There are a few endearing cat anecdotes, but even these fell short as many were re-hashed from previous novels. And because the mystery was highly undeveloped, Koko's sleuthing made few appearances.*As a side-note - a friend told me that the current derailment of this novel from the series usual quality is due to Braun's age - sad.

The mystery was a bit disappointing as it sort of fizzled at the end. The personal bits happening around the main character was interesting but not enough to keep it all going

I really enjoyed many of the early books in this series. This installment did not have the spirit or the authenticity of the others. It felt like someone had created a book out of index cards written by someone else.

Short and rambling and somewhat lacking in mystery or solution, but since I have become involved with the characters, I enjoyed the book. If you don't have an interest in these quirky characters the mystery would not keep you going.

I used to really enjoy this series, but unfortunately they've been going downhill. This one seemed to be mostly copy and pasted from others, with regurgitated information about Qwilleran's fortune and Koko's sixth sense. Towards the end, huge bombshells are dropped about Polly and the barn, but nothing is resolved! A motive is never really explained for the murder, and as another user mentioned, it's not clear if the killer is even caught. I think I'll stick with re-reading the first 10 of this series.

I had to listen to the last CD twice and still wasn't satisfied with the ending. Did I miss the capture of the killer?

These books are comfort stories - not too much thinking involved. Entertaining, but quick.Finished January 2007

It's been years since I have read one of the "Cat Who" books. I gave up on the series after noticing that the books were declining in quality. When the audiobook of this installment was donated to our library right before my Thanksgiving week trip, I decided to try it on the trip. I'm not a big fan of audiobooks because I'd rather read the books, but I thought I would give this one a try. It was delightful to revisit the characters in Pickax again. I love Moose County and its inhabitants. However, this book fell short in many ways. Long time fans will be disappointed by developments in the relationship between Qwilleran and Polly. There appears to have been a murder, but unless I didn't catch the development as I was listening, the murder was never resolved in spite of Koko's yowls insisting that there had been a murder. Without giving away the plot, I'm just going to say that Qwilleran's reactions to a development in the closing chapters of the book are quite unnatural. The narrator did a good job giving voices to the different characters. While this book is short on plot and very flawed, I still found it a pleasure to return for a visit to Pickax.

A good read for fans of the series. I don't know that new readers would like the book much as there isn't any mystery to it.

Lilian Jackson Braun is one of my go to author's and I always enjoy a little humor and mystery.
