About this audiobook

Sarah Turner tends the lock on the Lehigh Canal in Walnutport, Pennsylvania. She'd like nothing better than to get away from the canal, having enough of it as a child when she led the mules that pulled her father's boat. But being a widow with three small children, she seems to have no other option. Sarah isn't looking for love again, but should she ever find it, she knows it could never be with a canal man. Elias Brooks has left his newspaper job in Easton to captain the canal boat bequeathed to him by his grandfather. When he stops at the lock, Elias meets Sarah, a pretty woman with determination and courage, and her three children, who seem eager for his attention. Could a woman like her ever look past the ugly red birthmark on the side of his face and see the heart within? Sarah's side job is baking bread for boatmen. . .and one good-looking blacksmith named Patrick O'Grady. Who will unlock the key to Sarah's heart-the boatman or the blacksmith?

This is the final book in this series and the author did a great job of bringing this series to an ending. I loved learning about the whole canal navigational system in the 1800's and also appreciated the author's note on it at the end of the book. She also kept a thread of continuity throughout this series with the folks from Walnutport, PA.In this story we find Sarah Turner tending to the lock on the canal since her husband passed away working on the canal. Sarah has grown up on the canal and has always wanted something more for herself, and now for her 3 young children. But a job is a job and she has to support her family. One thing is for sure, she will never marry a "canal man" again.Enter Elias Brooks, a newspaper man in Easton, who has inherited his grandfather's canal boat. Elias leaves his job and takes up the job on the canal his grandfather left behind. Through many different and unexpected situations, Elias and Sarah meet and continue to cross paths. Elias has a red birthmark on the side of his face and has always believed no lady could fall in love with that, so when Sarah is standoffish he believes the worst, without understanding it is his job that she wants nothing to do with. Only his kind sister and can help these two people come together (with a little help from the oldest young boy, Sammy). I once again enjoyed my time on the canal and visiting with the folks at Walnutport. It was also enjoyable watching two people slowly fall in love, against all odds. This was a well written series; each story was easy to read and didn't take long. A good book to pick up and "get away" for awhile and just enjoy.
