- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I've read the following Edgar Allen Poe stories and poems, all of which are in this collection:The Tell-Tale Heart (4 stars)The Raven (3 stars)The Cask of Amontillado (5 stars)The Fall of the House of Usher (can't remember)The Masque of the Red Death (5 stars)The Pit and the Pendulum (5 stars)The Bells (3 stars)Many of Edgar Allen Poe's stories are amazingly evocative. They paint pictures you never forget- particularly the ones labeled "5 stars" above. You may not realize how good they are when you first finish them, since much of their value comes from their memorability, how you feel when you think back on them, and the fact that they are sometimes referenced in modern U.S. culture.I am impressed with Poe's range. While most of his work falls within the scope of the horror genre, "The Pit and the Pendulum" is a survival adventure story. The Cask of Amontillado is a suspense-driven, nightmarish crime story. "The Masque of the Red Death" is more like a dark fable or fairy tale. He is able to fluidly apply his signature, dark style to a range of different story types. The stories above are short and well worth the time it takes to read them.
