About this audiobook
Mark Twain
Mark Twain, who was born Samuel L. Clemens in Missouri in 1835, wrote some of the most enduring works of literature in the English language, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc was his last completed book—and, by his own estimate, his best. Its acquisition by Harper & Brothers allowed Twain to stave off bankruptcy. He died in 1910.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This remains one of the best narrative approaches to the life of Jeanne d'Arc. Mostly accurate by the recorded histories and written with Twain's passion and wit. There are a few things we know about the campaign of the Loire that are missing/not quite right, done because they were not yet known - nighttime bombardement at Jargeau for example - and Twain exercised his narrative freedom to augment the drama, but it's moving, clear, and pretty accurate.
The reading was well done and the little extras like reverb and touches of music at just the right parts were done subtly and tastefully and added to the story. The only hiccup for me was that the main narrator, sieur Louis de Compte, was read with a jewish accent instead of French which was a bit strange. But once I got over that and just let myself enjoy the story I really appreciated the reader! The American and French accents were well placed.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A wonderful historic work, artfully narrated and well-peppered with Twain’isms. Among the best books I’ve listened to. Enjoyed it so much that I purchased a hard bound copy - something I can annotate.
