About this audiobook
Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850, changing his second name to ‘Louis’ at the age of eighteen. He has always been loved and admired by countless readers and critics for ‘the excitement, the fierce joy, the delight in strangeness, the pleasure in deep and dark adventures’ found in his classic stories and, without doubt, he created some of the most horribly unforgettable characters in literature and, above all, Mr. Edward Hyde.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Pleasantly surprised by this novel. Thought it was a kids story, but it can get pretty dark in places. Although it has dated, still worth a read.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Robert Louis Stevenson s classic Treasure Island is the adventure story of Jim Hawkins who on a voyage for buried treasure finds himself in the middle of a mutiny with some of the nastiest pirates to ever sail the seven seas, including the pirate Long John Silver. I think this would be a wonderful book for a young reluctant reader, particularly one who is interested in a fast paced adventure plot. I particularly liked the characters of Jim Hawkins—the observer of all- and the complex Long John Silver (though he is a pirate he has moments of goodness). 3 ½ out of 5 stars.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a classic for a reason. The story is engaging, and the action scenes are realistic and entertaining.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Certainly a classic - Treasure Island first captivated me as a child, and did not fail to hold my attention now as an adult. Like many books I've read again as I've grown older, there were things I understood better, plot twists I could see but that nonetheless took me on a wildly exciting adventure like the one of my youth. I think this will always be a favorite for me - I love pirates, and the ones in Treasure Island were my very first taste of them. Not the ninnies or idiots of more recent pirate movie standards, these are true swashbuckling terrors, and I will always admire Jim for his adventurous spirit.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love the way the sea cook is introduced!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Just about the perfect adventure story. Pirates, buried treasure, loyalty, double-crossing, murder, mayhem, mystery - it's got it all, and a terrific coming of age story as well. Literally, the book that launched a thousand ships in the form of other pirate adventures all the way up to the present day. And I have to admit that with twenty pages to go I still had very little idea how it was going to end.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another novel whose ideas have become so prevalent in the genre that it is hard to appraise as what seems trite now was seminal when the novel was written. An enjoyable adventure story and Long John Silver is a surprisingly nuanced character for this type of story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I had heard it was one of the world's great adventures, but I always thought it would be a "little boys book." It turned out to be highly nuanced and can probably be enjoyed by all ages and genders because it works on many levels. The adventure itself is a great hook, and you don't want to stop reading at the end of each chapter, but it turns out that it's all really about loyalty and what that means, and about how to survive a journey with pirates and still keep one's honor. Long John Silver is one of the great complex villains/foils I've encountered in fiction, not a caricature like the brilliantly colorful villains in Dickens, and not so one-dimensional as the sadistic evildoers of other contemporary children's authors like Brian Jacques and Jerry Spinelli. He's as charming and compelling to the reader as he is to the hero-narrator. The illustrations in this edition are good, too.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5As a mother of two boys, I felt that I should read this classic. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it very much. It wasn't that women aren't present. It wasn't the language (though I did have some issues with getting into the style). It was the pace. For what is heralded as a boys' pirate life book, this had very little action. It felt as though the prelude was given all the pages; the story I would have been interested to read was given only a breath. Now, I love character development. I will argue that knowing the character is generally more important that knowing the plot of any given book, but Treasure Island seems to max out on this theory for me.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Jim lives with his parents, who run a bed and breakfast. When a mysterious man arrives to stay and dies while there, strange people come looking for him. Jim and his mom find a treasure map amongst his possessions. Jim takes it to the doctor and they round up some people to go looking for the treasure, include Long John Silver. But, looking for treasure with pirates can be dangerous...It was o.k. There were some times I found the story more interesting than others, but I have to admit that I had a hard time focusing on the story for some reason. I got distracted easily, so I know I missed some things. Funny thing - I thought it would pick up towards the end, but I think I actually found the beginning more interesting, or at least, that was when I was able to focus better.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5this was over all not that bad but i think it was a bit boring at times. i would have liked if there were more action with the ship. i think all the characters were brilliant and the overall plot was very good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I can remember trying to read this as a child but found it quite hard to get into, but trying again later on when I was older I loved it. I re-read it again recently and once again became totally absorbed. I love Pirates!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A nice adventure book...one I cannot believe I haven't read before!! Long John Silver was well developed and very well balanced, and I am a sucker for an antagonist with a heart! The characters, though not fleshed out or fully developed, are enticing and realistic. This is, by far, a pure adventure story, though the adventure is slow in rolling itself out. The simple suspense is delightful, and the justice dispensed to those of blacker hearts seems reasonable and natural. Long John Silver's disappearance at the end definitely leaves a wide window for future legends, ideas and adventures to form themselves.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Narrated by Alfred Molina. Had this on my to-listen list because of Molina's lauded performance. He tackles the classic with aplomb, differentiating among the voices of the growly pirates and the keen gentlemen, and smoothly describing the technical sailing terms as if he were an experienced sailor. I have to say the sailing terms were hard to grasp on audio, as well as the strategizing among the gentlemen and pirates. But at least I can say I finally experienced this pirate classic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is the first time I've read this book and I loved it. I had to do a lot of looking up of nautical terms to get a picture in my head of what was going on, but the story is gripping and well told. I'm also a fan of colorful dialogue and this is a great one for that. (It's also the obvious inspiration for all stereotypical pirate lingo still used today.) And I also wouldn't call this "Juvenile Fiction." Most kids today wouldn't understand a word of it...and you may lay to it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A re-read of a favorite from my childhood. It held up beautifully and filled me with nostalgia.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The shortest form of this book which I ever read. Classic story about pirates, treasures on an uninhabited island, adventures. The first time I read this story when I was 10-year-old, right now I back to this book to improve my English, but I prefer whole story, so I hope- I'll read them soon.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Grandly entertaining story of a a young man's acquistion of a treasure map and the ensuing treasure hunt. Not as engaging as it could have been due to the way the story is segmented, but still a great read I enjoyed very much.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A smashing adventure. Everything you could want, pirates, treasure, betrayal and tropical islands.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Disclaimer: I review books on how they stand alone without regards to anyone’s personal views about the author. I review based upon readability and how the book affects my life for good, and less upon literary style. This is an interesting read and does teach the qualities of both doing your duty and keeping promises. Jim, the main character boy, is loyal to his word. The story also shows the bad affects of drinking alcohol and being selfish. There are plenty of those types in the story, including the famous Long John Silver.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a lot of fun to read. I don't know what to say. It's a classic adventure. If you like pirates, read it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked this a lot -- very exciting. I think the first few times I only read the beginning few chapters, though.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A true adventure classic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great adventure for all ages.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not my kind of adventure at all, but I still managed to enjoy it. Stevenson's genius is still evident, still readable. There are a few references to things we don't know about anymore, but not enough to make it difficult to immerse oneself in the excitement.
Wyeth's illustrations are wonderful - if you can, read this anniversary edition with the full-color vibrant life. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Come and join us in a wonderful adventure story. Pirates, parrots, treasure maps. One of the most complicated villains in all of Victorian literature. An exotic setting, an exotic time frame. Who could ask for more?At a coastal inn, a mysterious and somewhat evil man takes up residence. Soon he’s pursued my creepy foes. What ensues is the most influential pirate story ever. Stevenson was admittedly aiming at a young male audience, but a reader would need to be unimaginative in the extreme not to get caught up in Jim Hawkins’ adventures on the high seas. Definitely recommended.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5deserved of its classic status.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The classic tale receives illustrations it deserves! Outstanding story of mystery, intrigue, deception and treasure of course. The characters are fun: Jim Hawkins the boy, appears to be out of his league yet manages to overcome all obstacles. Long John Silver is a study in opportunism and deception. It's an excellent tale that should be read and re-read!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A copy of this text is in my personal library. Actually in a junior high theatre class I'm teaching they are reading the musical version of this text. I wanted to read it to see the way it compared to the script. The reason I gave it three stars is I believe certain portions of this text contained words and phrases students would struggle comprehending. I wouldn't make it a class wide assignment, reading the book independently, but rather read it as a whole class. I would love to use this book as a read aloud and then select a scene from the play to act out. I think it would work well for readers theatre.
