About this audiobook

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in collaboration with his friend William Wordsworth, revolutionised English poetry; in 1798 they produced their Lyrical Ballads, poems of imagination and reflection using ‘the language of men’. They pointed the way forward for a generation of Romantic poets. Coleridge’s addiction to opium affected his poetic output, and yet the handful of poems he did produce were innovative. These ranged from the quietly conversational to the wildly imagined, and include two of the greatest in English literature: Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), English lyrical poet, critic, and philosopher, whose Lyrical Ballads (1798), written with William Wordsworth, started the English Romantic movement. He was born in Ottery St Mary where his father was the vicar, and he was at school with Charles Lamb and Leigh Hunt, and spent two years at Jesus College, Cambridge. He is best known for his poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, but his critical work, especially on Shakespeare was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. He also suffered from poor physical health that may have stemmed from a bout of rheumatic fever and other childhood illnesses. He was treated for these concerns with laudanum, which fostered a lifelong opium addiction.

I find Naxos audiobooks are very reliable for their clarity and well appointed choices of narrators. This is a beautiful audiobook rendering of Coleridge's most famous poems and of excellent recorded quality. Here the listener receives a double benefit of both well written and well spoken words to enjoy in a simple hour of fine literary mingling. The fact that the poems were composed under occasionally heavy laudanum (opium) use is just a connection between two genres of literature: classic and drug. They combine quite fluently in this production. Highly Recommended.

Very nice performance of some of Coleridge's most famous poems. I especially liked "Christabel."

'The Major Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge' contains many of his greatest poems, including the famous epic 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. Coleridge was an English poet (1772 - 1834), of the Romantic and the Gothic schools, whose legacy continues to influence our language today. For instance, whenever a person may describe a shameful burden they may say it's their "albatross" or a "weight around their neck", which is depicted in 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' when the mariner's shipmates hang the albatross the mariner had killed around his neck. For anyone interested in English literature, classical great works, poetry, or philosophy I recommend reading some of Coleridge's works. But be warned, Coleridge was a theologian, and a deeply religious man -- nonetheless, his works are worth reading and appreciating even in a secular sense.
