About this audiobook

Once, Sarah Bingham's biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she's landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control...

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible-when it means forfeiting the world she's always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.

It was good but not enough to give 5 stars. The 3rd book in this series after “a sorceress of his own” and “rendez-vous with tomorrow “ introduces the “present time” part of the series. I think that the series has potential and look forward to reading the following titles. In this book the heroine is fine but I think that something is missing like more of her inner thoughts.

Eager for a quiet break from the humdrum of academic live, college lecturer Sarah Bingham’s solitude is shattered when she is literally bowled over by a man being chased through the woods near her home. After saving the injured man from his assailants, Sarah soon learns that there is more to Roland Warbrook than meets the eye. Roland is an Immortal Guardian sworn to protect humanity from vampires whose bloodlust makes them corrupt and insane. After nine centuries, Roland is surprised by very little, but Sarah shocks him to the core with her kindness and acceptance. Can these two strangers find love together as death and destruction rains down about them?

The basic premise and many of the tropes are similar if not identical to Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters series. Nevertheless, there are one or two original elements such as mysterious origins of the gifted ones and the idea that vampirism is a virus.

Sarah and Roland’s romance is problematic mainly due to the fact that they are simply too perfect and there is virtually no conflict between them whatsoever. A little chatting about their shared passion for organic food and recycling (Seriously - he book is about immortals and they are concerned about carbohydrates and preservatives!), a little sex and everything is hunky dory despite the rampaging vampires and the blood drinking...

The secondary characters, in contrast, are far more interesting. Seth, the leader of the Immortal Guardians, is very intriguing as is the love-sick Marcus and the villainous Bastien. There are also some excellent action scenes with a great deal of blood and pain as the immortals are not bulletproof or immune to internal organ damage.

The overall story arc involving the gifted ones and their unknown origins as well as the mysterious woman rescued from the military compound are all compelling enough to continue with the series despite its shortcomings. Of course, it helps that I already own the first 4 books.

Undoubtedly a vampire romance, embodying tropes of romances which I avoid. Despite so much mush you want to puke, the characters were interesting and strong.

I think for a Debut novel into the paranormal this is a good start. The writing could be a little tighter but that should come as the story and characters get more developed. When I finished with this book I purchased the second novel Night Reigns to continue the story.

I really enjoyed listening to this urban fantasy novel. Sarah is minding her own business - working in her garden - when she finds herself too near a fight between vampires and their minions and one lone immortal. She finds this immortal - Roland Warbrook - being guarded by two minions. She attacks them with a shovel and manages to free Roland before the sun can rise and kill him. However, Roland's enemy isn't going to give up which leaves Sarah in danger. Despite being the reclusive type, Roland is determined to protect this courageous young woman who put herself at risk for him. Sarah quickly gets swept up in a world she didn't know existed and falls in love with Roland. Roland love her too but is very aware of the problems of an immortal falling in love with a human. Besides which, until his enemy can be vanquished, neither one has the luxury of time to explore their relationship. The story was fast-paced and the romance was hot. I thought Kirsten Potter did a very good job distinguishing between the characters and was very easy to listen to. The only negative to listening to this story is that I immediately want to listen to or read the next books in the series.

    Listening to audiobook.

This book was okay. I didn't hate it, but was not overly impressed. I was not drawn into the characters and the plot was boring in my opinion.

The story behind Lady Bethany traveling through time was unnecessary and didn't fit in the story, plus you never learn anything about time travel in the rest of the story.

Also, the fact that there was confusion on everyone's part and that is why everyone was so upset, was just a little strange. I don't think I've ever read a book where the bad guy was just confused and was able to be turned. It just seemed a little bit of a cop out.

I will not be continuing with this series.

When Sarah Bingham finds Roland Warbrook staked out in her garden she rescues him and finds herself caught up in a world of immortals and vampires and her life will never be the same again. She's a willing participant. The occasional author attitudes toward particular foods and gun ownership does make itself felt. A cut above some others in the genre, I actually liked the characters and felt that they respected each other.

Sarah Bingham is a music teacher at UNC-Chapel Hill. Roland is an Immortal Guardian protecting innocents from vampires. Their paths cross one very early morning when Roland is staked to the ground in a remote area by enemies who torture him while they wait for the sun to come up and burn him to ash. Sarah, out before sunrise to beat the heat, is digging up a place for her vegetable garden in a field adjacent to her home when she hears a loud commotion. After sneaking up in the trees to see what’s going on and witnessing the torture of a naked man she decides she doesn’t have time to go home to phone 911. Taking her shovel firmly in hand she whacks the bad guys in the head, unties Roland and helps him to her house thus saving his life. And that’s just the beginning. From the very first pages I loved this book. The characters are well-fleshed and interesting, the writing flows smoothly, the plot unrolls at just the right speed and there’s humor, action and sexual heat aplenty. A big plus for me is that this book is set in North Carolina, not far from where I live. I can count on one hand, maybe two, the number of books I’ve read that are set in North Carolina.Roland and the other Immortal Guardians are HOT, interesting, honorable, strong and yummy. Sarah is no shrinking violet and is gutsy and quick thinking even when she’s scared. Even secondary characters are well-fleshed. I very much look forward to continuing the series and with so many interesting characters I hope this series will be around a very long time

I love this series. It's like a cross between J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, except it's been consistently good. Granted, there are only 3 books in the series so far and I haven't even finished the third book, but I only have 30 or so pages to go and I'm out here typing this review instead of reading - probably because it's so good I don't want it to end!The Immortal Guardians are a group of "good" vampires who hunt the "bad" vampires who kill people. Roland, an Immortal Guardian, has been ambushed by a group of vampires and is about to be fried by the sun when he is rescued by Sarah, a human. Her actions put her in danger from his enemies and he discovers he is willing to do anything to protect her.I think what I like the most about the series is the strong secondary characters and the humor. The series has an overarching storyline and the love stories are woven into it. The leader of the Immortal Guardians is incredibly hot - powerful, yet protective (like Acheron) - but the other Guardians and their human Seconds are so likable that I wouldn't mind reading their stories first . . . I just wish they were already written so I could read them NOW!

Read from January 06 to 10, 2012Read for Fun!Challenges: TBR Challenge, Read for Fun, Audiobook ChallengeOverall Rating 4.25Story Rating: 4.25Character Rating: 4.25Audiobook Rating: 4.00First thought when finished: Oh MY! Can I be an Immortal....What I Loved: Seth---Oh I know it isn't his book but can I say the leader of the Immortals is like an oracle that you want around to laugh at his band of merry men/women. I actually really loved all the characters in this book. The romance between Sarah and Roland was well paced, sweet, and beautiful. Roland was so caring and Sarah was so understanding that they worked as a couple. What I Liked: The introduction of the world was well done. It wasn't like an information dump but more of an unfolding story that you wanted to grasp more of. I like that it unfolds through the characters and their communication. There is a lot more to learn and can't wait!Things that made me go huh?: It might be because I listened to the book in audio but holy decriptives batman. There were 2 bathrooms described in detail, 1 bedroom, and many organic meals. It wasn't to destracting but it did stand out.Audio Specific Thoughts: Kristen Potter did a pretty good job with the narration of the story. I thought the accents actually made it pretty easy to tell the different characters from each other. Overall I would listen to another book read by her.Final Thoughts: I want Lissette, Sabastian, Seth, and Marcus to have books. Oh and can there be a spin-off of the humans please :)

I very much enjoyed it, Didn't want to stop reading it, didn't want it to end. The book starts out with action and mystery and ends with action and mystery. The Chemistry between the 2 main characters is there from the start and builds wonderfully. The romance is off the wall sexy and steamy. We got lots of fantastic information to help us through the story at a wonderful pace. The secondary characters were introduced into the story well so that we are intrigued and wanting to get to their future books to find out more about them. I enjoyed Dianne Duvall's writing style and the world she has created for The Immortal Guardians, great kickoff to a series I will defiantly continue reading.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyI love it when a book surprises me by being really, really, really good. DARKNESS DAWNS is deeply romantic, daringly sensual, with dark paranormal characters that make it nearly impossible to put down.Paranormal romances are notorious for creating unbelievably dark yet desirable heroes who inexplicably fall for whiney, immature TSTL heroines. While the former is also true in DARKNESS DAWNS with the character of Rowland, the later couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to Sarah. These two are a perfect match. The first time they meet beautifully establishes their characters: She is strong and resourceful without being unreasonable or worse unbelievable, he is stoic and brooding without being detached or completely inhuman. I totally bought the rather quick emotions that developed and then appreciated the way Duvall slowed it down from the typical PNR pace. And I can’t not talk about the vampire mythology. Vampires and Immortals both drink blood and are preternaturally fast and strong, but Immortals are immortal and carry over various gifts (healing, telekinesis etc.) from before they were bitten, whereas, Vampires descend quickly into madness and bloodlust within years of their turning. There are plenty of unanswered questions raised about the true origin of Immortals and a few other supernatural phenomenon that only make me that much more eager for the next Immortal Guardians book.Fans of J. R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series will love this new series about a dangerous group of Immortals who battle against vampires. I’m already trying to guess which Immortal will get his story in the next book (I’m hoping for the leader Seth, but I’ll take any of them) when it comes out in December 2011.Sexual Content: several graphic sex scenes.
