    Betty Zane is the story of the first settlers in the Ohio Valley and their fight for survival during the Revolutionary War. The British have organized and incited the various eastern tribes to attack American "Rebels" in this lesser-known theater of the war.

    Betty is a fiery beauty whose quest for romance with Alfred Clarke is interrupted time and again by Indian raids and battles. In an unexpected twist, it is Betty who turns the tide at the final battle of Fort Henry.

    Inspired by the life and adventures of his own great-great-grandmother, Betty Zane is Zane Grey's first novel. This and the other two books in the Ohio River series are considered some of Grey's best work.

    American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father’s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey’s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey’s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

      What an amazing family story. I know my line has been here about the same amount of time, but boy, I haven’t heard any stories like this!

      Pretty good story of the settling of the western frontier during the time of the American Revolution. Zane Grey loosely based the story on the diaries of his great-great aunt Betty Zane and was definitely romanticized. I didn't expect the fair-handed treatment of Native Americans as much of the literature of the time simply called them savages and moved on. Grey actually dwelt on the unfair treatment of the native people as they were forced off their lands and characterized them with depth and nuance. It was an interesting and unexpected take. Betty, on the other hand, I just wanted to slap at times and tell her to grow up and quit taking herself so damn seriously. She was a bit of a nincompoop when it came to judging character. Overally, very good read though with a lot of action and romance.

      This book was totally different to what I normally read, but despite its slightly different style (the first book by this author and written in 1903) it definitely worked for me and really enjoyed it. It is even more interesting as in this book Betty Zane was one of his antecedents. There are two other books in the Frontier trilogy and have downloaded them from Amazon. All 3 books are free as copyright has expired. If you want something different with a great female lead who was ahead of her time, read this one! 4.5 Stars

      I also didn't like this audio book. Granted it did what I needed it to do, provide as a relief during my endless audio books on how to get more money, but that's all it did good. It sounded great, like an old western but telled from the girls perspective. Well Apparently that means following around some lady who wants every man to want to marry her, but if they try to, she acts like she's offended.IT did start out interesting with perspectives on the Indians that didn't sound like the were written in the 19th century, but hey by the end they came to prove that treating Indians like people was foolish nonsense of liberal women, not the truth. Certainly won't be reading the rest of this

      Zane's books are very repetitive, heroines are all plucky girls who adapt to the West and the heroes are all solitary nature lovers that are finally tamed by the girl. The descriptions of nature are tedious at times. Everything turns out just fine in the end without much tension involved in getting to there.

      A first edition thus, with these pecularities: from page 205 to 241 the in-between pages are missing, buty not to worry -- after page 258, a section begins again with pages 225 to 356 inclusive. Pages 205 to 224 seem to be loist forever on this edition. The wonderful thing is this volume was issued this way! There is no showing of any re-binding or removal of the spine.

      Grey's first novel involves his own family in the early frontier along the Ohio river. This historical fiction includes tales of Lewis Wetzel and several Zanes. The center of the work is Betty Zane, whose run for powder saved the fort during a siege by Indians and the British during the Revolutionary War.
