About this audiobook

Ava Markham is beautiful, savvy, chic, and more at home with Kate Spade than with the idea of fangs and fur. She can't get quite used to the fact that some of her closest friends have crossed over to the Other side. Then one night she is attacked by a rogue vampire, and her deepest fears are realized when her body begins a dangerous transformation from human to immortal-a change she cannot survive without the help of an alluring stranger who comes to her rescue.

Vladimir Rurikovich, an elite member of the European Council of Vampires, is on the prowl for a murderous vampire fugitive on the night he saves Ava from the clutches of death. It takes just one look for Dima to know he cannot live another eight centuries without the stunning and seductive Ava-until he discovers a secret about her bloodline that could change everything.

Christine Warren

Christine Warren is the New York Times bestselling author of The Others series, including Wolf at the Door, Big Bad Wolf, Born to Be Wild, Prince Charming Doesn’t Live Here, and Black Magic Woman. Born and raised in coastal New England, she now lives as a transplant in the Pacific Northwest. (She completely bypassed those states in the middle due to her phobia of being landlocked). When not writing, she enjoys horseback riding, playing with her pets, identifying dogs from photos of their underbellies, concocting all sorts of yummies (both liquid and solid), and, most of all, reading things someone else had to agonize over.

Probably would have liked it more, except rich, entitled people annoy me.

It is not often that I find a character that I am not fond of in a story, especially a heroine. Ava is that exception. She is such a stuck up, arrogant, rude and stubborn person that I am not sure why she has any friends. Ava was part of the original five characters that started the series. She was the only one that had not had a HEA. At this point in the story, several years after the last of the friends has married an Orther, Ava has managed to alienate just about everyone. She tells the woman that have called her friend monsters and can barely tolerate being around them. I am guess that Fate decided to show her that Others can be decent beings as well. I really feel she gets what she deserves for being so mean to so many. It was nice to see Reggie show up in this book. I think that it is the first time she has appeared since the author went to a New York publisher. I liked Reggie and it was good to see that she and Misha are still happy. I also enjoyed learning more about Misha and his family. There isn't much sex in this book and I understand why there wasn't more. Overall this is a good addition to the series since there are gaps filled in for one of the older characters. I think anyone that like the paranormal genre will like this story.

I have to admit that I am not quite finished with this book, but I am about two thirds through, and I know enough to say that while, at times, it's entertained, it's devolving into maudllin sentimentality. I also am not crazy about the heroine. And as another reviewer noted, the use of all the Russian endearments (and curses) was annoying. And does every vampire have to be named Vlad? Also the whole bloodlust/sexual lust thing just kind of grosses me out. I kept thinking about that scene in Seinfeld where George combined his two loves - eating and sex, and kept a sandwich in his bedside stand. So I was kind of laughing at the blood drinking/sex connection.

This one seriously annoyed the hell out of me. I hated Ava. Rude, mean, angry, arrogant are just a few of the words that describe her. If I were Vladimir, I would have killed her just to keep the rest of the world free of her toxic self. The use of several different Russian pet names also annoyed the piss out of me as did the name "Dima". And can I mention that the name "Misha" also rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know, I had to finish the book just to make sure all ended well BUT, UGH, I so did not like this one.

Here is the thing, usually I like to identify with the heroine. Ava is really not that likable. She is judgemental, quick to anger, slow to see reason and just generally irritating. That said the rest of the book was pretty good. I liked seeing some old characters from past books. Vlad, the good guy, was sexy. The sex was not to bad. The plot was a little stale but ok. It is just that I wanted more. I am a fan of Christine Warren but the book as a little too cookie cutter similiar to books she has written in the past. There was no heart stopping moments of passion or terror. All in all 2 1/2 out of 5.

So I just finished reading this book, and I have to say I wasn't really impressed. For starters, I thought this was the first book in "The Others" series. Turned out to be book 7. Oopsey. The funny thing is that I didn't really notice that it was at the tail end of a series until I was done and started doing a little research on the author's website christinewarren.net. So maybe my bad impression was mostly my fault. Should have done my homework. It's set in contemporary New York, and Ava (our heroine) is a successful 30-something who is changed into a vampire as the result of a brutal attack. (Isn't that how it always goes? Your life is at it's peak and then WHAM, you're the walking undead.) Lucky for Ava, an avenging vampire happens upon the scene of her attack. He slaughters the rogue vamp who attacked her and whisks her back to his apartment to help ease her into her new existence.Dima is an 800 year old Russian vampire who happens to be in the New York area chasing down a crazy lady (who is also a vampire; will the wonders never cease?) And not only does he take her back to his apartment, he strips her down and ties her up to prevent her from hurting herself. That is what she wakes up to almost 24 hours later. Tied up, half naked, in a strange place, and a vampire. I don't know about anyone else, but a situation like that would really piss me off. No matter how hot the guy was or how good his intentions. Apparently for Ava, seething rage easily gives way to wanting a good boffing, because the next thing you know they are getting it on. Which is what most of us expect to happen when we read a vampire novel with the word 'erotic' anywhere on the cover. But man, there was no preamble, no rationale, nothing. One second she wants to kill him and literally the next second they are having sex. Whoa. It made no sense. It pretty much goes on like that until the end. I guess there is something of a plot relating to the capture of the crazy Russian vampire lady that Dima was tracking when he found Ava. And of course, it is exposed the Ava was involved more than anyone knew. But the fight scenes are too easy and the climax is decidedly anti-climactic. After I finished the book, I checked out some other reviews (this is when I discovered it was book 7 and not book 1). From what I gathered, "You're So Vein" is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to Christine Warren's work. I got the gist that even some of her most die-hard fans were let down by this one. So I don't feel like my faux pas of reading the series in the wrong order has really tainted my opinion. I mean, it read like it could have been a stand-alone book. There were other couples in the book, and apparently the other books in the series were written about them. But none of them were so integral to THIS book that you needed to have read them to follow what was going on.I don't know, maybe I will go back and give the first six books in this series a gander so I can see what I missed. Maybe. As it stands, I have to give this book a fairly lowly 2 star rating for the plausibility factor alone. (I mean who in their right mind would be strolling through New York alone at 2AM to begin with???) It's the best I can muster.

Another hot read from Christine Warren. In "You're So Vein" she finally gives us the story of Ava--the most high-maintenance diva of all the original 'fantasy fix' girls. Ava has an issue with Others, so imagine what happens when she's attacked by a vampire, saved by another vampire, and then finds herself falling in love with her savior? Let's just say, "It ain't pretty."Warren writes with a lot of humor and much of it is also bitingly sarcastic (which I adore). The verbal daggers thrown and exchanged between Ava and her friends' husbands will surely keep a grin on your face. There is a problem with "You're So Vein" though. I think if you haven't read the other Other books, you may be a little confused at the cast of characters. We have vampires, werewolves, fae, and a few other assorted paranormal races on at least three different continents in this series; so if you haven't been keeping up, it might impact your enjoyment in this latest story. As for me? I ate this sucker up. Ava and her vamp are hot, hot, hot. Yet it never crosses the line into erotica or gets too kinky for the mainstream romance market. This one is set in New York City and Ava, being a former model, name drops designers with the best. But it never got overbearing and that's saying a lot for me. I also liked that there's no true mortal danger in this book. There's a 'bad guy' that's very bad true, but no 'good guy' paranormals were harmed in the writing of this book. So just sit back, enjoy, and fan yourself occasionally.
