- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I adore Best Friends Animal Sanctuary !! Love it, Love it, Love it!! But this book..... not so much. I found it to be choppy and slow and just felt very flat. Even some of the "emotional" parts didn't come across with any feeling. I'll read more about Best Friends because I can't wait to go there someday but this book just didn't do them justice.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book relates the early history of a huge (the size of Manhattan) animal sanctuary in Utah, from choosing the place to becoming fully operational and solvent. The author presents both a sweeping picture and stories of individual animals and some people. Predictably, the narrative is in turn funny, moving and poignant, but always warm and interesting. The general tone is very uplifting and the book is mostly pleasant to read (if you're very sensitive toward animal suffering you might want to skip chapter 10 - I wish I had - but otherwise I didn't find it emotionally hard to read). It's a book whose "characters," both human and animal, will stay with you long after you finish it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I've been to the Best Friends Sanctuary and it is truly a beautiful, spiritual place where animals of all kinds enjoy paradise here on Earth. On the 1-5 scale the book itself doesn't quite rate a 5, but the Best Friends organization rates at least a 10 so I'm bumping it up the book's star quotient to thank the author for bringing attention to their work. No animal lover would ever regret the purchase of this story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A well written book about the beginnings of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Like many books of this topic, the names, people and places often times to blend together.
