About this audiobook

It's been thirty years since the terrifying abduction of twin sisters Rebecca and Molly Underhill by a deranged man who lived in a cabin behind their house in upstate New York. Fearful of retribution against their family, the girls kept the incident secret.

Rebecca, now a painter and art teacher, and alone since Molly died of cancer, suddenly begins getting strange and anonymous text messages-the first with just her name. Is Molly trying to communicate with her? Not possible, thinks Rebecca, who's never believed in God or an afterlife.

And it couldn't be their attacker from so many years ago; he was imprisoned for a similar crime at about that same time. Surely he'd still be in jail or dead by now-wouldn't he?

But things get stranger. Rebecca's art student Francis, an autistic savant, gives her a series of paintings he's done. Rebecca, with increasing dread, realizes the sequence of scenes depicted in the paintings match the nightmares she's had every night since the horrific ordeal three decades earlier. How could Franny know? Is it a ghostly warning of some kind?

Unnerved, Rebecca spills the whole frightening account of the abduction to her ex-husband and friend, Michael, who, dismayed by the story, vows to help sort out the mysterious texts and disturbing series of paintings.

What happens next is a frightening rollercoaster ride that builds up to a soul-shattering climax that will leave the reader checking the locks on their doors and windows…

For years, the Underhill twins had repeatedly been warned to never walk through the woods alone. The rumor was that a serial killer lived there - someone who had reputedly murdered his entire family. While Rebecca Underhill may have taken such warnings to heart, her twin sister Molly had always had a more rebellious nature. Besides, the sisters had always felt safe walking through the woods, and they figured that as long as they were together - they could handle whatever came their way. That belief was put to the test when the sisters decided to explore the delapidated cabin behind their house. They never expected to ever cross paths with the deranged man who actually lived there, but he unexpectedly came home and caught them inside his house. After a particularly harrowing ordeal, the girls managed to escape - but fearing retribution against their family - they swore to keep the entire incident a secret. In the thirty years since their terrifying ordeal, the girls have done their best to forget what happened to them and to move forward with their lives.Rebecca is now a painter and a special needs art teacher, but unfortunately, Molly has long since passed away from cancer. Suddenly, Rebecca begins to receive a series of cryptic text messages from her sister. As much as she wants to believe that Molly is trying to communicate with her, Rebecca just can't bring herself to accept something so implausible. It couldn't be their attacker from so many years ago; he was captured and imprisoned for a similar crime at around that same time. Surely he'd still be incarcerated or dead by now - wouldn't he? Rebecca so wants to believe that 'the boogeyman' can never scare her again, and she doesn't want to believe that she ever gave him such power over her - but the night terrors she still suffers from say otherwise. When one of Rebecca's art students - an autistic savant named Francis - gives her a series of paintings, she is absolutely astounded by what she sees in each one. She realizes that the scenes in each painting depict something from her nightmares - the nightmares she has had every single night for the past thirty years. Rebecca is certain that Franny has absolutely no knowledge of her horrific ordeal, but she is also stunned and confused by the accuracy of each of his paintings. It's almost as though Franny is somehow forcing Rebecca to relive the most horrifying moment of her life.I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. In my opinion, the story was intriguingly original and I enjoyed the subtly mysterious elements of prescience that the author utilized all the way through it. I also appreciated the way the author wove memories of the past throughout the present-day story and knitted both stories together. I would certainly say that Mr. Zandri captured the true essence of his female characters and wrote a poignant story with an extraordinary amount of sensitivity - a definite A+!Actually, The Remains by Vincent Zandri is one of five books that my next door neighbor sent me, all by the same author. I'm not absolutely certain, but I think that the author may be my next door neighbor. Wouldn't that be something?

The Remainsby Vincent Zandri This was certainly a suspenseful thriller! Twins abducted as children but escaped from him and never told anyone. The guy went to prison for another crime for 30 years. Those 30 years are up and he is out! A savant is drawing pictures of her past and her nightmares with warnings written in the paintings! I really liked the plot and characters!

I love a good thriller. You know what I mean -- the kind you can't put down. The ones where you keep saying "Just one more chapter . . ." while the the bath overflows, the roast cooks to stone, the sun sinks lower and lower, and the moon starts to rise. And the next day at work you're all bleary eyed and bored -- but the killer has been caught, the heroine is safe, and all is right with the world again. My problem is that as I've gotten older and more experienced, it's harder to find stories that provide that old "thrill." In an effort to hold readers' interests, some authors keep upping the ante by divising increasingly gory, sadistic, and ridiculously complex tortures for their victims to suffer. I say, Give me a break! When I read a thriller, I want a good, believable story -- a protagonist who is intelligent but nonetheless vulnerable; a villian who is cleverly malicious but not maniacally insane. I like a story that I think could actually happen. What I want is a good cat and mouse game where the mouse ultimately bells the cat.I found such a story with THE REMAINS by Vincent Zandri. There may not be much in the story description that sets it apart from run-of-the-mill thrillers, but it is solidly written with interesting and plausible characters and a story line that kept me flipping through the pages late into the night. I liked Rebecca, the heroine, and found her backstory to be fascinating and believable. As a young teenager, she and her twin sister were abused and traumatized when they were trapped in an isolated and abandoned house for several hours by a serial killer. Thirty years later, her twin has passed away from cancer, her marriage has failed, and her career as an artist is flatlining. The girls never told anyone about their ordeal and so Rebecca still suffers the reprecussions of that terrifying experience, making her all the more vulnerable. When she begins receiving mysterious text messages, Rebecca finally begins to connect with her ex-husband in a way she never could while they were married. She also receives help and support from her childhood neighbors, an artistic savant, Francis, and his mother. Turns out that Francis knows more about the danger Rebecca is facing than he's able to verbalize. With Francis, Zandri has created a fascinating and sympathetic portrait of an autistic adult. I totally enjoyed THE REMAINS and plan to read more of Mr. Zandri's novels. Of course, I fully expected Rebecca to survive, but wondering who else would make it out alive -- and how -- kept me completely focused to the last page. If you like a good thriller, THE REMAINS is a highly entertaining read. Just start it early on a day you have nothing else to do - you won't get anything else done anyway!

Vincent Zandri has got to be one of the greatest authors when it comes to writing mainstream AWESOME, riveting suspense. I had the pleasure of reviewing his suspense novel, Moonlight Falls, and really enjoyed his work with that one. Now, Zandri is back and better than ever with this new novel, The Remains. It's captivating, page turning, and roller coaster emotional! The Remains has a well thought out and researched plot with gripping characters. Rebecca's character was FANTASTIC. Of course, you can't go wrong with a character named Molly either ;-)! Rebecca's personality, her struggles with being abducted 30 years ago, her fear, all her thoughts....I felt as though it was so real that I was becoming the character in the book. The story gripped me THAT much. And dear Franny...bless his heart. He added depth to character as an artistic autistic savant who can tap into the spirits to help warn Rebecca of circumstances. VERY interesting! But, above all the characters, the thing that hooked me most, was the thrill of reading a suspense novel that good. It felt like I was watching a movie every time I opened the book. I would gasp when the characters gasped, I would fear when they feared, all of those things that come with a fabulous suspense novel or movie. I literally lost some sleep over this novel. I just HAD to push through to the next page. My heart sped up at each new twist at the end of the chapters. At every turn in the plot I found my self further on the edge of my seat with a white knuckled grip. Wowsers! That kind of blood pumping, thrilling suspense is THE best! Vincent Zandri's books are wonderful for all readers, from young adult to older adult. It's got all the thrills of Hitchcock and Christie with some mysteriousness of King mixed in, but best of all, while it's blood pumping, hold your breath captivating, it's a clean cut novel. There aren't any sex scenes or language. That's why I will continue to go back and read Zandri's novels. He writes 5 star worthy books that can be read by ANYONE! Less than 5 stars for this novel would be unjust. I am highly recommend this novel to EVERYONE-mystery lovers, Stephen King lovers, Hitchcock or Christie lovers and just plain book lovers! It's one that is NOT to be missed!

The Remains by Vincent Zandri is one of those books that starts out great and just keeps getting better, this was my first chance to read anything he has written, and I am now his newest fan!Rebecca Underhill and her twin sister Molly were only twelve years old when they were abducted and held hostage by a man whose house sat in the woods behind their house. After three horrendous hours they were able to escape. They decided to keep it a secret, because they wanted to protect their parents. Shortly after their abduction the attacker was apprehended for the abduction and attempted rape of another woman. Sentenced to thirty years in prison the girls just assumed he would die there. Fast forward thirty years, Molly died ten years earlier from cancer, and her parents died shortly thereafter, leaving Rebecca to carry the burden of her secret alone. Within a week of the thirtieth anniversary of the abduction Rebecca starts receiving strange text messages, and having dreams, flashbacks really of what happened all those years ago, and when an autistic artist tries to warn Rebecca by sending messages in the only way he knows how, will Rebecca continue to think that it is Molly trying to communicate with her, or will she finally realize that the man whom she thought had died is back!!!The author's writing skills has the story literally flowing off of the pages, drawing you into the life of the main characters so well that became totally immersed in whats was going on, I could actually feel the bond that Mr. Zandri brings to life between the sisters. I really enjoyed how he didn't give us the account of what actually happened to the sisters until late in the book, allowing the reader to jump to all sorts of conclusions. If your looking for a superbly written, fast paced psychological thriller, with a storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat then you should buy this book. A word of warning, it's a book you won't be able to put down, and a story you will continue to think about long after you read the last page!Even though I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes it in no way alters my opinion of this book!

I knew just looking at the cover of this book that it would be creepy so would someone please explain to me why I would decide to pick it up after the sun had gone down?I raced through this book. Once I'd started there was no going back (and thankfully it's short enough to handle in one setting). While the plot was a bit predictable and there were some editing bloops the main story had enough "thriller" in it to keep me interested and biting at my nails (although not in the same way Michael bites his). One aspect of the book that was great was the holding off and leaving it to our imagination that Zandri does with Rebecca and Molly's story. Instead of getting everything laid out in front of you he builds the story up and that alone will keep you turning the pages. Now, I am going to see if I can manage sleep tonight. One thing is certain - I'll be turning off my cell phone before I try!

The Remains by Vincent ZandriPublisher StoneHouse Ink ISBN 0982770502 ISBN 13: 9780982770504At the request of Pump Up Your Book, an EBook edition was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion. Synopsis (borrowed from PUYB): Thirty years ago, teenager Rebecca Underhill and her twin sister Molly were abducted by a man who lived in a house in the woods behind their upstate New York farm. They were held inside that house for three horrifying hours, until making their daring escape. Vowing to keep their terrifying experience a secret in order to protect their mother and father, the girls tried to put the past behind them. And when their attacker was hunted down by police and sent to prison, they believed he was as good as dead. Now, it’s 30 years later, and with Molly having passed away from cancer, Rebecca, a painter and art teacher, is left alone to bear the burden of a secret that has only gotten heavier and more painful with each passing year. But when Rebecca begins receiving some strange anonymous text messages, she begins to realize that the monster who attacked her all those years ago is not dead after all. He’s back, and this time, he wants to do more than just haunt her. He wants her dead. My Thoughts and Opinion: Zandri delivers again!!!! If you follow my blog, you know that I became a fan of Vincent Zandri after reading Moonlight Falls. He has been a frequent visitor here as "Guest Author" for his books and one Sunday was here "Live". I have to be honest, I was a bit skeptical reading The Remains, afraid that it would not be as good as, or better than Moonlight Falls. I was wrong!!! I will be very vague as to the story line so as not to include spoilers. This was the kind of book that I call a "one more chapter" read. Short chapters and so gripping that you have to read "just one more chapter" and then you realize it is 10 chapters later. The chapters alternate between Rebecca's present life and then to her past and back to the present. The characters were life like including the autistic savant artist. Mr. Zandri's writing style is brilliant and because of that, this reader became so engrossed in the plot that I was transported to Albany, where the story takes place, and not aware of what was going on around me. The story pulled me in from the first few pages and didn't let go until the last word. It was a bone chilling read!!! This talented author takes the reader on a heart pounding suspenseful ride as the story follows Rebecca in the present and just when you remember to breathe, he catapults you to her past. The unfolding progress of the plot is written at a crescendo pace, from the first word to the last. This book is a nail biting, white knuckle, spine chilling, page turning thriller. Do I suggest that you read this book? Not only do I say that YOU HAVE to read this book but also recommend this be the next book you read!!! Fantastic!!! Sensational!!! Excellent!!! Vincent Zandri hits this one out of the park!!!!!! My Rating: 5+

From my blogAnother author for me that can throw a punch, a scary punch that is. This story makes you pay attention, you don't want to miss anything and you just want to keep reading until the end. The book has very short chapters so you don't realise how much you have actually read. Imagine being abducted as a child and 30 years later feeling like you are being stalked and realise it might just be from the man you thought had died. I loved how VincentZ had Rebecca in the present while also having blow by blow memories of the horrific past, that dynamic was a great way to tell this story. At times you couldn't tell if she was paranoid, having a nightmare or actually living, experiencing the horror. I felt like I was reading a horror and in my head heard Beethoven's dark classical music, dun dun dun dun!!!!

I can sum up my thoughts on this book in three very simple words. Masterful. Suspenseful. Amazing. Before I found this book on Pump Up Your Book Promotions, I had never heard of Vincent Zandri or his other popular books. Can I please say that I am so glad that this has been remedied? From the moment I turned on my Nook and read the first page of The Remains, I was hooked. Completely and utterly committed to finishing this entire book in one sitting no matter what else was going on around me. So, that's exactly what I did! The Remains is the epitome of the mystery/suspense genre. The story flows beautifully, stringing the reader along with a mixture of past memories and current events combined. I know that in my mind sometimes this can be distracting, but Zandri accomplishes it with such ease. I was never confused, yet always attempting to anticipate what would happen next. Also, Rebecca Underhill is such a well written protagonist that I had an instant connection with her. Her love for her sister Molly, her confusing relationship with her ex-husband, her utter love for art, all of this created a character that I absolutely loved. When the story started to pick up pace, and Rebecca found herself in danger, I felt myself flinch more than once at the predicaments she was put into. Zandri is an expert at writing scenes that literally buzz with the suspense contained within them. A few times, I will admit, I audibly gasped at what happened on the page in front of me. This in turn caused me to flip as quickly as I could to the next page. What I'm trying to explain here, likely in too many words, is that "page-turner" doesn't even begin to do this book any justice. Lest I ramble on, I'll simply end with saying that this book is one of my new favorites. I know that I will be buying a bound copy of this book as well so that I can share it around my bibliophile group of friends. If you are a reader of mysteries, a lover of suspense, this is definitely a book for you! Go ahead, give it a read

The Remains was my first Kindle book for I prefer regular books, and I must say I am glad I decided to read it. I was hooked to the story from the very beginning, the letter Rebecca Rose Underhill writes to her sister Molly was the hook which with its mystery captivated my attention till the very end of the book. Instead of telling the story, I will highly recommend it to all who like mystery and absorbing read. The Remains by Vincent Zandri, it is a must!!! I absolutely love the book.
