About this audiobook
Jim Thorpe was one of the greatest athletes who ever lived. He played professional football, Major League Baseball, and won Olympic gold medals in track and field. He'll forever be remembered by the sports community and by his Native American community, who consider him a hero on par with Crazy Horse.
Born on the Sac and Fox Reservation in 1887. Jim was sent as a young boy to various Indian boarding schools strict, cold places that didn't allow their students to hold on to their Native American traditions. Jim ran away from school many times, until he found his calling at Pennsylvania's Carlisle School. There, coach Pop Warner (who is as famous today as Thorpe himself) recognized Jim's athletic excellence and welcomed him onto the football and track teams. Glory followed, as did surprising disgrace. But through everything, Jim was a person to admire-an engaging, spirited, and impressive young man.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It was very off-putting to hear the author (who was only 11 when Jim Thorpe died) narrate Thorpe's story from the first person. All the cheery glibness made me want to puke. At least my library had accurately catagorized this as fiction. What a waste of time!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Spectacular in depth biography of Jim Thorpe, written in first person. Extremely detailed, great narrative.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A "youthful" first person narrative which seems a bit simplistic, but what is described is anything but. The treatment of NA by government policy should make us rethink what it means to be an "American". I didn't learn any of this history in school!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Bruchac's decision to write this biography as if it were Thorpe's autobiography is somewhat problematic, but the 1st person narrative will appeal to young adults and it's a quick read. Due to the style of the book, it is important to read the interesting and informative source documentation and author's note at the end.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Told from this first-person, this fictional autobiography tells the story of legendary football and track star, Jim Thorpe. The narrative primarily focuses on the years Thorpe spent at the Carlisle School for Indians in Pennsylvania. Bruchac uses an easy-to-read style that is filled with facts about football, life in an Indian boarding school and relationships that Thorpe forms. While this only a fictional account of part of Thorpe's life, the meticulous research makes it a great non-fiction selection for somewhat reluctant readers. This book is hefty, but middle school boys needing to find a biography to read will be relieved to discover this gem. Definitely a good choice where either football books or biographies are in high demand. I also recommend the audio version. Bruchac's skill as a performer is obvious in the narration.
