About this audiobook

Unerringly perceptive, superbly written, every page packed with the warmth and compassionate wisdom that have become Nancy Thayer's trademark, Heat Wave tells the moving story of a woman who, after her seemingly perfect life unravels, must find the strength to live and love again.

Making the startling discovery that her family finances are in dire straits is only the latest shock endured by Carley Winsted after her husband's sudden death from a heart attack. Resisting her in-laws' well-meaning overtures to take in Carley and her two daughters, the young widow instead devises a plan to keep her family in their beloved home, a grand historic house on the island of Nantucket.

The solution is right at Carley's front door: transforming her expensive, expansive house into a bed-and-breakfast. Not everyone, however, thinks this plan prudent or quite respectable-especially not Carley's mother-in-law. Further complicating a myriad of challenges, a friend forces Carley to keep a secret that, if revealed, will undo families and friendships.

When her late husband's former law partner keeps showing up at the most unexpected times, Carley must cope with an array of mixed feelings. And then, during a late-summer heat wave, the lives of Carley and her friends and family will be forever changed in entirely unexpected ways.

Lyrical, emotional, dramatic, and ultimately wonderfully uplifting, Nancy Thayer's latest novel is compelling from its first page to its last.

Eh.... Light weight, soap opera. You always have to wonder when the way to fix messed up relationships is to let people die.

Predictable, but still a very good read!

After her husband's unexpected death and the discovery that their finances were not what they seemed, Carley Winsted must devise a plan to be able to provide for herself and her two young daughters. Despite her in-laws doubts, Carley turns their expensive home into a bed and breakfast. Throughout the changes to her home, Carley must also deal with a disturbing secret entrusted to her by a friend and the unexpected presence of her late husband’s former law partner. Overall, Heat Wave is a light read based around the relationships between friends and families. A great book for the beach.

Young Carley Winsted has been left a widow with two young daughters, a large house on Nantucket Island and no money. Her solution to her financial situation is to turn her home into a three room B&B. While it was a nice read, it was just that, nice. I found the characters to be a bit light-weight and the plot forced.

This novel started out with an interesting story about a woman who loses her husband and then has to pick up the pieces of her life and go on. I liked the basic idea of the novel and I even enjoyed the first third of this book. It was a nice change from the crime novels I had been reading recently. The last two thirds of the book were less enjoyable. The plot seemed to drag and sometimes the motivation of the characters was not clear. Carley, the main character did not appear to go through the grief process after her husbands' death. She moved from one situation into the next without a lot of reflection and it made her character appear flat. As a reader, I just didn't care about her as much as I might have if her personality was more developed. The last part of the book was the hardest for me to believe. I was really disappointed by the plot. I did finish reading it, but found myself distracted by my own disbelief as the plot became more and more "soap opera-ish". I finished this book feeling a little sad that it didn't live up to my initial expectations. I also felt a little insulted by the predictability of the plot. I expect much more from a novel. I want to feel something as I read. I want to care about the characters. I want to be challenged by the plot, either emotionally or mentally. I want to be sad that the story is coming to end end. In this case, I felt sad, but only because the story did not live up to my expectations. Heatwave should have been a bittersweet tale about life and love and families. Instead, it just left me with the bitter. Thanks to GoodReads for the opportunity to read and review this book.

story of family, friends and relationships, challenges of life and and facing deaths of close people. Kind of obvious plot. Probably won't read this author again.

When Gus dies of a heart attack from a congenital heart defect, Carley, a mother of two young girls, must find her own path to care for her home and family. Gus's parents want to take in the girls, but Carley is determined to make it on her own. The decisions that she makes are realistic at the same time as they are heart-wrenching but she manages to move forward with her life and bring joy and love to those around her. I wasn't exactly sure that I like this book as I started it, but I got suckered in actually talking to the character as I read. As it went along, I was hooked and was thrilled with most of the ending. ***SPOILER*** I didn't like the way Vanessa's situation ended, that was the only down part for me.

I enjoyed this book very much. It's the story of Carley, a young widow, and her 2 children, living on picturesque Nantucket Island. Thayer provides lots of local flavor and charming descriptions with cozy adjectives. I didn't love the ending, but the rest of the novel was good enough to make up for it.

Last year I read Beachcombers by Nancy Thayer and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was thrilled to see Nancy had a new book, Heat Wave coming out this summer. Beachcombers is a perfect summer beach read so I had a feeling that Heat Wave would also be a good summer read. Heat Wave did not disappoint!Heat Wave takes place on Nantucket. Carley Winsted has recently become a widow at a young age. Her husband, Gus has left her with not only two girls to raise but broke! He has left her with the family home so she sets out to find a way to stay in the home that her girls have always known. She decides a Bed and Breakfast will help keep her and the girls in the home they love but also give her the chance to be at home with the girls. I admired Carley for her strength in making this decision at a time in her life when she would just like to crawl in bed and pull the covers over her head.Carley has two extremely close friends, Vanessa and Maud who call themselves Las Tres Enchiladas. The women know everything about each other. They are the kind of friends who pop in and make themselves at home in each others homes. Carley is approached by Maud with a very disturbing secret that could change their lives drastically. At this point Maud becomes my least favorite character. To top it all off Gus' good friend, Wyatt causes Carley to feel things she is not sure she should be having while grieving for Gus.This book is about friendship, loyalty, grief and the challenges brought on by having to move on. I was very surprised at one point in the book and found myself having to stop and grab kleenex! I really was not expecting that in a summer beach read. Even though that particular event saddened me, I still enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it.

Thank heavens I didn't spend money on this; in future, I'm probably going to forego requesting ARCs of her books, too. Don't get me wrong, this is a perfectly adequate beach book, heartwarming, focused, competently written. It's just soooo predictable and banal. Recently widowed Carley, still in her 30s and with two young daughters, opens a B&B on Nantucket. There are issues with the daughters, with friends, with her in-laws and with men -- and one tragedy -- but nearly everything is so well-telegraphed the only curiosity was how she was going to reach an end point where her characters got, not necessarily what they wanted in all cases, but what they needed. Yawn. I suppose this is a reasonable enough beach book for undemanding readers who don't object to lots of saccharine; I seem to remember, however, that some of her early books, before she got caught up with this Nantucket fixation, were much more readable and interesting. This is like unflavored rice pudding.

The story revolves around Carley who has recently been widowed and her friends and family on Nantucket Island. She has obstacles to overcome as she discovers that her husband hasn't left her with much money. This was a good read. I read it in 2 or 3 sittings. I just wish that some of the storylines would have been developed a little more. It would make a great beach read.

Heat Wave takes place on Nantucket Island, the perfect setting for this story of Carley Winsted, a recently widowed mother of two girls. With the support of friends and family, Carley decides to run a bed and breakfast in her home in an effort to keep her house and to make a living. While the bed and breakfast is a success, Carley's close friendships with two women are challenged when one of them behaves in a way that threatens the friendship of all three. Carley struggles with raising her two daughters, maintaining a loving relationship with her in-laws, and finally, deciding whether love and marriage should be a part of her life. This story, told with humor and in a warm and caring manner, is an excellent beach read for the summer. The book will be released on June 21, 2011. (This review was based on an advance review novel).

This is a very readable book---a quick read. It's a nice escape---a woman with lots of problems that she overcomes---with relative ease---a little too much ease. Thayer sort of glossed over the predicament of finding yourself left with a huge house and no money. Opening a B&B is no joke and the simplicity with which it all fell into place was one of the ways the book treated money with abandon. I wish Thayer had given us a little more in two areas----what happened to the in-laws and what did the main character really think of her first marriage? Having this energetic powerhouse of a woman doing everything in all directions was admirable on the one hand but also, frankly, just not believable. But, I liked this book---a novel is a novel and light though it was I enjoyed reading it.

An easy read about female friendships, family relationships and love. A good book to curl up with, to get lost in, without having to think too much. A predictable book, but it entertains and leaves you smiling. Can't ask for more in a beach book.

Recently widowed Carly Winsted lives on Nantucket Island with her two daughters. Struggling to find a way to support her family, Carly turns her home into a Bed and Breakfast Inn, even though her in laws disapprove. Carly eventually finds herself becoming attracted to her husband's best friend. A light, fluffy book that was fun to read.

Thanks as always tom the EarlyReviewer program for sending me this book. I was anxious to read it and review it to keep myself in good standing with the program. The other reviewers are correct. It's kind of a fluffy beach read, but I live in the northeast and it won't be beach read season for weeks. Anyway it's ok but predictable and not really exciting.

This is the story of Carly who is widowed with two young girls. To make ends meet, she turns their home into a B&B. this is against her in-laws wished whom she is always trying to please. Carly finds herself attracted to her husband's best friend & starts secretly seeing him, but is reluctant to make their affair public. The story is pretty predictable and like others have said "a good beach read", but not much more.

A good beach or rainy day read. Although I thought the characters were not as well developed as they could be.The story was light and easy to read. Three friends, their husbands and a spare male friend are the main characters. In-laws and a few extras fill the cast.I really enjoyed this book up until the last few chapters. The story tied up a little too predictably. It was just too neat and clean but was overall a good read.

I received this as an early review copy. I have to say that this was an easy read and would make a good vacation book. But, honestly, while I really wanted to like it, I found it very "fluffy." I think it could have been a great book, but it wasn't deep and the characters seemed very one-dimensional.

This is an interesting story of a young widow and her two girls who find happiness again, after converting their home into a bed and breakfast; opening their hearts to new experiences and relationships. It's typical of Nancy Thayer's other books, with a beach setting and a study of female friendship, some good romance, and also drama.
