About this audiobook

CODENAME: CHANDLER

After having her cover blown and risking everything to stop a nuclear Armageddon, covert operative Chandler figured she might have been shown some appreciation for the sacrifices she made. Instead, the very organization that trained her locks up Chandler's sister, Fleming, for treason, intent on extracting every last scrap of information from her broken body and mind.

SPREE

Despite impossible odds, Chandler launches a desperate rescue mission, recruiting old allies (Jack Daniels and Harry McGlade, from Konrath's novel Whiskey Sour), and new ones (Val Ryker and David Lund from Peterson's Pushed Too Far, and Tequila Abernathy from Konrath's Shot of Tequila) to break into a black site-an ultrasecret military prison on US soil where no one gets out alive. But standing in her way is a squad of deadly psychopaths and a rogue government agency determined to destabilize the nation-and conquer the world.

Buckle up. It's going to be one hell of a ride...

Book Info: Genre: Spy ThrillerReading Level: Adult—explicit sex sceneRecommended for: Fans of thrillers, adrenaline junkiesTrigger Warnings: murder, torture, threat of sexual assaultMy Thoughts: While as entertaining as Flee was, it wasn't quite as good at holding my attention. Nonetheless, we learn more about the various characters, have a couple more run-ins with Harry McGlade (who is incredibly amusing) and spend lots of time observing some really sick psychos. Most of this book is set near the Wisconsin Dells, an absolutely beautiful place, so it was fun to read about that, and also fun to think about Hammett and her merry band of psychopaths meeting up in a clown motel...So, still a great read for people who like a high-octane thriller, adrenaline junkies, and fans of Konrath's body of work. This book also had an explicit sex scene that felt sort of added on which I skipped through, since it didn't really add anything to the story. Next up is the brick of a book Three, which is over 600 pages. Watch for that review!Series Information: Spree is the second book in the Codename: Chandler series.Book 1: Flee read and reviewed 5/17/13, review linked here where formatting allowedExposed is a novella featuring Chandler, and may be read after Flee; I will not be reading it right nowBook 3: Three, to be read nextDisclosure: I purchased this book for myself so I could read the whole series after receiving the third book through Vine. All opinions are my own.Synopsis: Superspy and assassin Chandler has just barely averted nuclear annihilation when the very organization she works for has her brought in on treason charges, trussed up for interrogation. After a run-in with Chicago Homicide cop Jack Daniels, Chandler discovers one of her sisters, Fleming, has been transferred to a black ops site where the modus operandi is torture and death.Chandler launches a breakneck mission to infiltrate an impossibly secure prison—putting her on a collision course with a squad of violent psychopaths trained to negate her precise skill set. As old enemies reemerge and new ones appear around every corner, Chandler will rely on the help of unexpected allies, including an ex-mob enforcer named Tequila and a firefighter named Lund. But even they may not be enough to stop what lurks within the unlisted military base: a rogue government agency plotting to destabilize the entire nation—and conquer the world.

Chandler is a female version of Bourne; a very good assassin and she works for a secret agency of the United States. But now they want her dead; as does the president. While protecting her own life she finds out her sister Fletcher is being held captive in a secret site in Wisconsin. Fletcher is being tortured for the information inside her brain. And to top it off, a third sister is one who is out to kill them both! If you like old fashioned over the top spy stories or action comics, this is certainly a book to enjoy. If you are looking for a realistic thriller, find another book. It feels like a mixture of Bourne, James Bond and the Danger Girls. I enjoyed the insertion of characters from the author’s other novels. The action is no stop is the killing. I thought I had read the first in the series, but hadn’t. It still didn’t take away from this one, but you do have to read the third book in the series to see how it ends.

I purchased this book on the strength of having liked several previously purchased books that Konrath had authored. I wasn't disappointed this time either although, instead of hard, fast, intelligent men agents, this story is about the three remaining identical sisters from the original seven that were trained by the Instructor, for use in covert intelligent operations. As always, Konrath's stories are intense, written tightly, action packed with well characterized principals doing things that seem impossible but, made plausible by Konrath. This is a story about operatives going beyond human limits, using intelligence, their physical training, imagination and sometimes just plain luck to overcome unbelievable obstacles and prevail in the end. Even their friends, picked up along the way, were amazing creatures and loyal beyond belief. I found it refreshing to find female characters that are both physically and intellectually overpowering as well as extremely attractive specimens as well. Great plot, intense action and never a dull moment. A page turner of the first order. If you haven't read a Konrath book recently, it is time to reach out for a tense treat. Loved it, especially the contrast between the good and the evil characters. Konrath creates great characters and then doesn't disappoint, he lets the good ones win!

"Spree" is the fifth in the Codename: Chandler series. Although I've not read the previous novels, I chose to read "Spree" because I like Konrath's Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, and Shaken. This novel should not be taken seriously. It is a crazy, way over the top thriller, with all action and virtually no character development. It's fun to read because you just can't believe the outrageous things that happen in one chapter, then find that the next chapter outdoes it. The action is so ludicrous, it's funny and sometimes hilarious. There are a few sex scenes, probably written by coauthor Ann Voss Peterson, a Harlequin romance novelist. This is an excellent book for ADD people. There are so many chapters that they're not numbered and some are as short as three paragraphs. Each chapter is entitled with the subject character making it easy to follow. Each chapter leaves you hanging. It's a real page-turner. Even with 461 pages, "Spree" is a quick read. The story revolves around sisters Chandler, Fleming and Hammett. They had four other sisters, Ludlum, Clancy, LeCarre and Follett, now deceased. Somehow, these women are all identical twins. One is a psychopath, one is a sociopath, and one is actually soft-hearted. Now, you see why you can't take this book seriously?Hammett is the evil twin, a psychopath who travels the world killing people. She has no compunctions about committing murder, but is very fond and protective of animals, particularly dogs, cats, horses and domesticated Siberian foxes. If Hammett didn't have to travel for her job, "[s]he could easily imagine having a few foxes. And a doggie and a horsie."Fleming, the most normal of the sisters, is attracted to a mercenary named Tequila. Watching him welding iron, Fleming thinks: "Though she'd never admit it to anyone, [she]Fleming had always had the hots for Darth Vader, and seeing Tequila in that black welding mask made her want to crawl across the pinecone-strewn lawn and violate him in delicious ways."The sisters are highly trained spies, similar to Bond without the sophistication. Weapons include all variety of knives; every type of gun; martial arts type kicking while riding a galloping horse; razor blades; a stone-crushing machine; explosives; fire; salt and pepper used to blind an opponent; and crying. At one point Chandler and Hammett have a knife fight while balancing on high voltage wires. Transportation includes horses, hot air balloons and ATVs.The scenes are inventive. Chandler saves herself from drowning in a reservoir by tying her belt, made of fifty feet of braided paracord, to a salamander that she threw to shore, wrapping it around a post.If you like wild, crazy action scenes, "Spree" is a fun read. Just don't expect realism or anything serious.
