There was just something vaguely disappointing about this book. Isador spent too long being wishy washy, I think, but I'm not quite sure.

Eleven year-old twins, Lily and Oz, and their family inherit a house from deceased triplet uncles that is attached to an old chocolate factory. The children soon find out that the house is anything but boring, with an immortal cat, a cigar-smoking rat and flower wallpaper that talks. Things heat up when Oz is kidnapped by the one uncle who really only faked his own death and has plans to create chocolate that makes you immortal and thus go back in history to win his beloved. The Secret Ministry of the Unexplained gets involved and brings the twins on to help thwart Uncle Isadore's evil plans. This 293 page book is one that appeals to both boys and girls, especially if they enjoyed Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I just finished this one on audio. I really liked it, although I questioned one of the twists at first. I think kids will enjoy it too.

This book follows the adventures of eleven-year-old twins Oz and Lily, as they move into a magical house (in which their great-great-uncles once had a chocolate shop), meet an invisible cat, a talking rat, and a ghost elephant, and try to stop their evil, immortal great-great-uncle from getting his hands on chocolate molds that he could use to destroy the world. While the story starts out a bit difficult to follow, with many characters and twists and turns in the action, it hits a climax about 100 pages from the end that sends the rest of the book on a thrilling, suspenseful race to the end. Author Kate Saunders does a commendable job in making the characters in the book seem realistic and the magic and the story seem believable. The story includes numerous surprises throughout, none perhaps bigger than a main character with an unexpected change of heart. The ending of the book is a tear-jerker. This book is recommended for libraries to have in their collections. It is a captivating story with an important lesson that even those who appear most evil can sometimes have a change of heart.

Background: Lily and Oz's family has just inherited an old house on Skittle Street out of the blue. It is a strange matter, because the house used to be owned by a long dead uncle who what a famous chocolate maker. Lily and Oz realize that the house is more than it seems, it is magic, and they must help an immortal rat and cat keep their evil immortal uncle away from them and the family.Review: There was a lot going on in the book, so many magical people, places and things, and it was a little hard to keep track of at first, but this audiobook was adorable. I was laughing out loud in my car through the whole thing and the end even brought a tear to my eye. Lily and Oz play off one another well and their magical pets are hilarious, especially the cat, she is a trip! The plot had great flow and I wanted to keep listening to it to find out who was behind some of the drama. I think that for young readers and listeners this would be a wonderful book. I really enjoyed myself while listening to it.
