About this audiobook

In New York Times bestselling author Darynda Jones's Death, Doom and Detention, the normal part of Lorelei MacAlister's life didn't just slip away quietly the day Jared Kovach came to town. Nope. The normal part of her life shattered. It exploded. It burst into a gazillion shards of fleeting light.

It went out with a bang.
Goodbye normal.
Hello dark and eerie.

While her best friend, Brooklyn, is focusing all of her energy on helping Lorelei hone her abilities, Lorelei is dealing with the reality that Satan's second in command has taken up residence inside her body. Oh, and the fact that she has a crush on the Angel of Death. But what a beautiful death it is. If those weren't bad enough, something sinister has come to town and it wants nothing more than to hear Lorelei's dying breath as it strangles it out of her. Thank goodness the gang has a supernatural champion. But what happens when the only being who can save them switches sides midstream? How can a group of misfits capture one of the most powerful beings ever created? And will they find out how to bring Jared back to them before it's too late?

It all started with Death, interfering grandparents and some pissy high school students.
Lorelei has some issues to deal with. She has her grandparents controlling her love life. There is this whole save the world thing to deal with. She has high school drama added to with some new pissy attitudes. The love of her life is the Angel of Death and he's no longer interested. She finds out that there is some weird secret society right under her nose. Then she stumbles upon a new skill in her abilities that takes her deeper into the mysteries.
All that and she's only 16.
I enjoyed this second book in the series more than the first. It was darker, and had more bloodshed for sure, but it also had heartbreak. Sad, sad teenage heartbreak. I loved her new talent. I think it's my favorite new skill of the year so far. Totally awesome ! So the book was very good and stayed in the YA zone. I wish it wasn't I'd love this series with more adult issues. It had a few irksome teenage drama-rama moments that didn't fan out for me but they were important for this to be YA. I love the characters this author writes in any age group.
I am going on to book 3 and I can't wait for it.

Contemporary, Paranormal, Young Adult, RomanceRiley’s Switch, New Mexico Lorelei McAlister’s life changed the day Jared Kovach came to town. The normal life she had didn’t go away quietly it exploded and shattered into a gazillion shards of fleeting light. No more normal welcome eerie and dark.Lorelei’s best friend Brooklyn is determined to help Lorelei hone her abilities. Lorelei on the other hand is trying to deal with the fact that Satan’s second-in-command has taken up residence in her body. Having a crush on the Angel of Death on top of that and Lorelei has more than enough to deal with. As if that isn’t enough to handle something sinister has come to town. The only thing it wants is Lorelei’s dying breath preferably while it is strangling her. At least the gang has a supernatural hero on their side. What the gang of misfits didn’t count on is the one being that can save them changing sides midway through the battle. Now the misfits need to find a way to capture one of the most powerful beings ever created. They also have to find a way to bring Jared back to their side before it is too late. This is proving to be a wonderful trilogy that has more twists and turns so that the reader never knows what will happen next. The characters are fun and engaging and have the story moving at a quick pace and keep it from having any slow spots. It will also have readers wanting the third book to see if things will work out for Lorelei and Jared. This has it all with paranormal and romance and some mystery elements that make for a wonderful plot. This is proving to be a story that will be fun for readers of any age.

After a week of reading books that disappointingly read like paper-pulp Xanax, Death Doom and Detention was just the breath of fresh, fast-paced air with kick-ass dialogue I needed. An excellent story with really great characters you can get behind. And thank you thank you thank you Ms. Jones for having two breath taking male leads and no love triangle!! I can cheer both of them on! Seriously, there wasn't anything I didn't like about this book - nothing. I picked it up and did not put it down again until I'd read not only the last page (ok, a little tiny bit of boo and hiss here) but the sneak peak at the next book in October. I was reading this book outside and seriously, it was so good, I did not move even after the rain started (it wasn't a lot of rain, and I shielded the book, of course!).

Thank you for not making me wait a year until the next one. I know this is YA, but it's a great story/series. I can't help but try to mesh events in this series with those in the Charley Davidson/Adult series. Different, I know, but still fun to imagine. :)

Being sick has its advantages, I get to read more of Darynda Jones.I really enjoyed seeing the character growth and the complexities of growing up. Lorelei is learning a few things, and she is not liking it all. We see her try and figure out not just how to BE the Prophecy, but how to live it, what it means... memories returning, demons emerging, and where is her backup!?I look forward to digging into book 3 in the series this evening.

This is second installment of the Darklight series. And it does start out with the scene of Lorelei when she was younger and learning how she was the host of one of Satan’s minions, which pretty much sets up the pace for the rest of the book.

Lorelei is still reeling from everything that has happened to her. Learning that she is a Prophet that she can stop a war and that the boy she loves is the Angel of Death, I guess would kinda do that to a girl. Her grandparents are still keeping some truths from her, and she is frustrated. But one things she does have is Brooklyn and Glitch who are awesome friends and stuck with her through everything. We don’t get to see much of Jared, so there really isn’t much development where Lorelei and him are concerned. I do hope to see more of Jared in final installment. I liked Lorelei before, and I was glad to see her growing up and learning who to trust and not to trust and accepting that this is her life and her destiny.

The world building was a little on the slow side at the beginning and it picks up about halfway and when it does it is fast and danger seems to lurk around every corner. With people out to get rid of her and a new mystery guy in the picture, and a war that seems to be well on it’s way, there is plenty of action. I did feel that this one was a little darker that the first installment, but we are dealing with Satan and a war, so I would expect nothing less. The ending was one major cliffhanger so I am anxiously waiting for Death, and the Girl He Loves.

Death, Doom, and Detentions was a great sequel, it had plenty of action, realistic characters, a dash romance and a slight mystery to it. Overall, I really enjoyed this and would definitely recommend picking this one up.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:Death, Doom & Detention, book #2 of Darynda Jones's DARKLIGHT series is a great continuation installment with lots of great moments, tons of character growth for the leading characters' supporting cast, a new evil villain, and a wonderfully developing storyline. I didn't love it as much as the first book, but it was still a very enjoyable read.Darynda does an amazing job of both making the book work well as a stand-alone, yet allow many of the missing pieces from book #1 to be filled in for those of us that read and enjoyed it. To be honest, I think the reason I didn't love this release as much as the debut was the lack of Jared, and therefore the lack of the continuation of Jared and Lorelei's love story. The necessity of Jared's removal for much of the main story allowed for a lot more Brooke and Cameron though, and THAT I thoroughly enjoyed! It solidified one of the things that I loved most about Darynda's YA... the lack of a love triangle for the leading characters! There is somewhat of a love triangle amongst the supporting cast, but it's subtle, and even that is broken up by the introduction of another interest. Like all of Darynda's books, DD&D is chock full of mystery, and while this release wasn't as action packed as I generally expect from Darynda, it was very intense towards the end and ended with a crazy cliffhanger that had me wishing for Death and the Girl He Loves immediately.LITERAL ADDICTION gives Death, Doom and Detention 4 Skulls and would suggest that those who started the series definitely read it! And while I would still suggest it for those looking for a good stand-alone, my personal opinion is that the series is better served by enjoying the books in order.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales.Quick & Dirty: Good YA Paranormal with fun characters and good action.Opening Sentence: I was six years old, napping in the back seat of my father’s car, when I first saw the end of the world. The Review:Lorelei MacAlister’s life will never be normal again. She just recently found out that she is The Prophet and she is supposed to save the world from a horrible war between humans and demons. She also recently met the guy of her dreams who happens to be the Angel of Death, but he has been forbidden to date her by her grandparents. Lorelei’s parents disappeared 10 years ago and she has been living with her grandparents ever since and they have pretty much lied to her the whole time about a lot of things. She has always had visions that are very unpredictable and she needs to start controlling them better so she can figure out what she needs to do to save everyone she loves. In the mean time something is happening in the small town of Riley Switch. Everyone seems to be acting really weird and there seems to be a lot of negative energy being let off and it is all being directed at Lorelei. She ends up having some really intense visions and Lorelei is afraid that she won’t live through the events that are coming. There is a group that has come to town that would love nothing more than to see Lorelei die and they will do anything and use anyone to accomplish their goal. With her little group of friends, they need to figure out how to stop her vision of the future from happening, but they have another big problem. Jared (the hot angel of death) has disappeared and they have no idea where he has gone. To be able to protect Lorelei they really need Jared’s help, but will they find him in time?Lorelei is our heroine in this book. She is a young girl that has been through a lot in her life especially in the last few months. She realized that her beloved grandparents have been lying to her basically her whole life and she has recently fallen in love for the first time, but she is not allowed to date him. She is having a hard time dealing with everything and has a little bit of a woe is me attitude at times. She has a really great group of friends that are a great support to her. Overall, I really enjoyed Lorelei as a character and I felt that she grew a lot throughout the book.Next we have Jared the hot yet forbidden Angel of Death. In the first book Lorelei meets Jared and it is pretty much Love at first sight (which is one of my pet peeves and it honestly drove me a little crazy). I felt that in the first book there was really no development to their relationship at all, but I am happy to say that this was much better in this book. They aren’t really allowed to be together but you can tell that they both really want to, and it creates good suspense and anticipation. I wish that they had a few more moments together, but we have the next book to look forward to for that. I hope to get to know more about Jared and his story as well because he is still a mystery in a lot of ways. There are three more characters that are very important to Lorelei and the story. First we have Cameron who is a Nephilim charged with protecting Lorelei. He is a loner and really doesn’t open up much to anyone but under the tough guy act he really is a good guy that cares about Lorelei and her friends. Next we have the fun spunky Brooklyn. She has been one of Lorelei’s best friends since third grade. She has a great attitude and she adds a lot of humor to the story. Last we have Glitch, he has also been one of Lorelei’s best friends since she was a kid. He is smart, funny and at times clueless. He is a great character and a great friend.Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There are a few things that bugged me but it was a good read that kept me interested. The flow of the book was good and the plot developed very well. I personally thought that book 2 was much better than book 1. I felt that more happened and that the character development was much better. There is a pretty bad cliffhanger at the end so I am eagerly awaiting the next book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that likes YA Paranormal. It is a great fast easy read.Notable Scene: I realized instantly I was having a vision, but it hit like an avalanche, knocked the breath out of me and stung my eyes like an arctic wind. I’d never had a vision so vivid, so uncontrollably real. I could feel the slickness of blood as I slid in it, scrambling to get to Ms. Mullins. I could hear screams and cries of absolute terror as students rushed for cover. I could hear the splintering sound of gunshots, could smell the gunpowder and see the smoke.Suddenly Mr. Davis came into view. He was trying to get to us, to Ms. Mullins. He glanced around wild-eyed and came face-to-face with the shooter a split second before the gun went off again, hitting him in the chest. It didn’t stop him. He barreled forward, determination locking his jaw. It took five shots to bring him down. He spun toward me and sank to his knees, his tie, a brilliant red, matching the stains spreading across the front of his shirt, his face frozen in shock. My bloody hands shot to my mouth in horror. In all the chaos, I never got a clear view of the shooter. I saw a wrist. A hand. A gun. My line of sight stopped there, because the barrel was turning toward me and I couldn’t seem to look past it. A boy stepped into view, but he was simply the blurry backdrop for the gun, hazy and out of focus. When he pulled the trigger again, I could almost make out a sneer on his face before the bullet hit its mark right between my eyes.FTC Advisory: St. Martin’s Press/Macmillan provided me with a copy of Death, Doom and Detention.
