About this audiobook
Barely Breathing is the second book in the million-copy bestselling Breathing Series.
“I’ve spent most of my life trying to make it to a future that still hasn’t happened, or avoid a past that won’t let me go. I don’t remember when I’ve ever just stopped to live in the present, to hold on to the seconds I’m in.”
Emma Thomas’s struggle with an abusive home life came to a heart-pounding conclusion in the final chapters of Reason to Breathe, the first installment of the Breathing Series—Rebecca Donovan’s bestselling romantic-thriller (USA Today). Now her secret life has been exposed, and her tormentor can’t hurt her anymore. Yet some are still haunted by that night. The bruises may have faded, but scars and fears remain. How will she reclaim her life when she’s barely breathing?

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was not really sure what book two was going to bring to keep the story moving, but it did deliver. This continues to follow the same characters from book one. Emma is moving in with her mother which you know is going to bring some issues/drama/trauma based on their past together. I enjoyed this one, but again, feel it was a little too long for what it was. However; the author had a way of keeping your interest during the whole story. I was never bored and I finished it pretty quickly for being such a big book.Overall, I did not love this one as much as the first but it was still pretty good….on to the conclusion!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not quite as good as the first book of the series, but still very interesting - enough that I'll read the third book. Definitely read book 1 first and if you like that you should read this one, too.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The amazing journey of Emma Thomas continues in this amazing book. The twists and turns of her story are incredible and her struggle to reclaim her life are inspiring. I am loving this trilogy and I can't wait to read the conclusion. I definitely recommend this one but you really have to read all three to understand the full story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Just when you think you couldn't be taken any further into the depths, you are. Every emotion Emma feels, you are right there with her, your heart breaking over and over until you can't possibly take anymore. No book has ever evoked such emotion as this series has for me. Having now read the first two book for the second time, and just finishing the last one, I am emotionally spent, in the best possible way. Emma's story is one that will stay with you for years to come.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is a continuation of the Breathing series. It was not as good as the first book in the series, but it was still a really interesting and enjoyable read. The previous book left off with Emma's aunt trying to kill her. In the first few pages of this book, you find out that Emma did survive, her aunt did go to jail, and that she has been dealing with the fall-out from everyone discovering that she lived in a deadly situation. And though she has been living in a safe situation with her best friend in the whole world, Emma makes the shocking decision to move in with her mother--the same one that she couldn't even stand to talk to in the last book.Emma and her mom, who says Emma must call her Rachel not mom, have a few good days together. Then somehow Emma's mom goes off-the-wagon after realizing how much Emma reminds her of Emma's deceased father. Emma's mom's real personality comes out throughout the book. She is more than just an occasionally sloshed character: she's a full-fledged alcoholic who neglects and emotionally abuses her daughter, who develops unhealthy attachments to one of the younger men that she dates, who owes money to a drug dealer, and who manipulates anyone she is around. If you want to get psychoanalytical about her, she is a textbook case of borderline personality disorder. The more intoxicated she is, the meaner she can be. And she can be just as vicious with her words as Carol was with her fists. Rachel is enabled by almost all of her friends, and has been for years. Rachel is jealous of any love or attention that Emma receives, especially when the attention comes from Rachel's boyfriend. (This apparently reminds Rachel of how Emma's father doted on Emma, but didn't love her.)Emma eventually realizes that she is in a toxic situation with her mother, but she doesn't seem to understand that the same could be said for her unhealthy attachment to Jonathan--the mom's boyfriend. Actually, it's his attachment to her that is much more disturbing. I don't see how anyone could see his character as anything less than creepy. And Emma's ability to tell him anything, but unwillingness to talk to Evan about her home life is really sad, especially when you realize that he is dealing with what happened the night that she was almost killed by her aunt on his own, too. This book made me more uncomfortable than the previous book, which is why I couldn't give it five stars instead of four. There are some parts of the story that I felt could have been left out and others that I wish had been more developed. It was still a really good book, though.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5With the last book ending so suddenly, I went right back on Amazon, buying the next book jumping right into it. This part of the story seemed harder to read than the first...The reason that it is so hard to read is that even though Emma is finally out of harms way, it still haunts her. The dreams, flashbacks, insecurity... Everything that Emma did it always seemed to swing back to her past. As much as she tries to escape it's their always reminding her of who she is. This is hard. I want Emma so badly to be alright but years of abuse can not wipe away clean. Emma still deals day to day the struggle that she went through before. She is coping the best that she can and that's what hurts. Seeing Emma walk around like nothing happen when you know she is silently screaming inside.Emma is now with her mother which I felt made things worse for Emma. She is with a lady who she doesn't know and well, I felt like the mom did not do her job. Instead she thought selfishly about herself putting Emma once again in harms way. I don't even want to get into this...SMHThe love interest didn't go quite as like I expected. Yes, I did understand Evan. He was struggling just to get to Emma. He did what he could but, I felt at times he didn't try hard enough. All he thought about was how Emma was shutting him out, blah, blah, blah. She's been through a lot you jerk, back off!*rant over*Barely Breathing is another fierce confrontation that will made you wince. Every chapter adds pump up tension that at times you can't stand to see Emma go through that again. Never mistake that just because the fight is over the war is won. Barely Breathing is nail-biting compelling story that you must read.
