Uilleam MacRieve believed he’d laid to rest the ghosts of his boyhood. But when a brutal torture revives those ancient agonies and destroys his Lykae instinct, the proud Scot craves the oblivion of death. Until he finds her—a young human so full of spirit and courage that she pulls him back from the brink.

Seized for the auction block, Chloe Todd is forced to enter a terrifying new world of monsters and lore as a bound slave. When offered up to creatures of the dark, she fears she won’t last the night. Until she’s claimed by him—a wicked immortal with heartbreaking eyes, whose touch sets her blood on fire.

With enemies circling, MacRieve spirits Chloe away to the isolated Highland keep of his youth. But once he takes her to his bed, his sensual mate becomes something more than human, evoking his savage past and testing his sanity. On the cusp of the full moon, can he conquer his worst nightmare to save Chloe…from himself?

In two words I would say this book is "darkly enthralling." I literally couldn't put it down till I passed out last night, enjoying it till my eyes couldn't read any longer - then I woke up early this morning and finished it. Chloe has a fighters' spirit and a curiosity to match. Uilleam - whose name I sorely wish to know how to pronounce - is a wounded character but still alpha in all things and is a good, if twisted, leader. Together they make a pillar of flame that dances between spurting out and blazing towards the sun with heat. They fight, they love, they cry, they laugh... Together they help MacRieve to overcome his nightmares and embrace his future with his one true mate.

SummaryUilleam MacRieve, is over nine hundred years old, and he still doesn’t have a lifemate. His family suffered a great loss, due to a mistake he made as a teenage boy, and now there is only his twin and Macrieve left. His twin is all he has, but when he is captured, and tortured, his life changes. He doesn’t believe that he is redeemable and that there is no good left in him. But then he feels the call of his mate, and he knows he has to live for her. Chloe Todd, is driven, and is working toward playing in the Olympics. She plays on a professional team, and she has everything going for her. She has dedicated her whole life to soccer. But then her father comes to her, acts strangely, and leaves. She then finds herself kidnapped by witches, who want to auction her off to the highest bidder. She never imagined paranormal creatures existed, but her father is their enemy, and she is the key to destroying them. But then she is rescued by Macrieve, who is gentle and charming and tells her they are mates. She never thought she would be brought into a world of vampires, witches and shifters. But there is a key to her past that Choloe doesn’t know, and when all is revealed it could ruin any future she has with Macrieve. The HeroUilleam MacRieve, once made a dreadful mistake. A mistake that cost him his family. As a teenager, he thought he had found his mate, but it was a succubus, who made him believe in a love that wasn’t there. He was only a boy when she seduced him, and then enthralled him. When his family found out the truth, he loses both parents and an unborn sister. Now all that is left is Monroe and himself. Macrieve blames himself, even hundreds of years later. Macrieve, is the tortured hero you just feel drawn to. He is like a magnet in the story, and from the very beginning, my heart broke for him. He hasn’t had it easy, but neither has his twin. Macrieve was such a good hero, even if he was a pain at times. But he had a certain complexity that was compelling, he isn’t a simple drawn hero. He has many depths, and it was an adventure seeing Macrieve grow into his character (despite how old he is), and boy did I want to share a bed with that man. He can turn on the heat like none other. His strength of will is powerful and after all he has suffered, he can still prove himself on each page. The HeroineChloe Todd, was a truly magnifiscent heroine, but I am not surprised with Kresley Cole writing her character. I don’t think I have read a book of hers, where I didn’t like the heroine. Chloe is driven, passionate, and accepting. She is not one of those that goes into denial about her true identity or her change in circumstances, which sometimes happens in paranormal romances. When Chloe learns about paranormal creatures, she doesn’t put her mind in denial, she accepts things as she views them. She is determined to succeed in her dreams, and that is to play soccer. She has worked her whole life for it. She has a quality to her character that the reader is always cheering for. I loved her wit and playfulness and readiness for anything that came her way.Plot and Story LineMacrieve is the 13th installment in the series. I still can’t believe how much this series has grown and developed. I remember when the first books came out, and there was just vampires and such. Now it has expanded to so much more with each book. I do need to catch up on the series, but I felt like reading this, I wasn’t totally lost. Which is good since it is the later half of the series. What was impressive about this story was the emotions it conveys to the reader. I felt like I was all over the place, from laughing my head off, to tingling in certain parts of my body, at the edge of my seat in suspense and totally in tears. It definitely wrenched quite a bit out of me, and even though it’s not my favorite book of the series, I really had a jolly good time with it. I will say that the heroine impressed me way more than the hero. Now the hero has some major unresolved issues that causes a negative….way negative impact on his relationship with Chloe. I felt like he was such a jerk at times, especially when he learns the truth about her, a truth she had no knowledge of. But even though I felt like he could have treated her better, I also felt a mixed array of feeling over his character…because his character is about human nature. What drives us, what causes us pain and suffering and what can give us joy in life. You see the battle in himself and Cole is such a talented author in conveying that war and showing his true self even though there are parts that aren’t pretty. But they are true to who he is. The setting itself is pretty great, I mean we have this whole “in danger” aspect, and everyone is on edge. And you feel that tension in the story. One of the other aspects I loved was how unpredictable this story was. When I thought I had guessed what was going to happen next, I was blown away in the next chapter. This story definitely was full of some thrilling twists and turns that keeps you guessing. As I look at my reading experience of this story, I will say that the ending definitely is superb, as far as how things end for the couple, but it does leave a cliffhanger of sorts…which makes me hungry for more…CoverI actually adore this cover. The eyes are at the center and make the cover great. I love the intense stare, and that hair, it gives off the dangerous vibe of the story.Overall ViewMacrieve a another great thrilling addition to the series, a story of danger, intense romance, dramatic characterizations, stunning detail and a story to tie you up in knots. One HELL of an adventure!!

Ah man, I really expected to be partial to this hero, and he started off with such potential! But then he took an idiot pill or something and spent nearly the entire rest of the book being an ass and standing in the way of his own happiness. I was a little wary going in that he would be mean to the heroine at first due to his history with her father, but then he impressively leaped that hurdle right off, and I guess it sort of lulled me into thinking that the obstacle to their HEA was going to be an outside force or something. But no, it was just a false start and then took off with abandon. I feel like the Lykae, especially, are so loving and protective of their mates by nature (kind of wolf/dog like), that it just felt even more wrong for him to be horrible to his. *Especially* after they'd already developed an affectionate attachment prior. He goes from thinking her presence has saved his very existence and that she's absolutely perfect for him- to threatening her life and purposely being cruel (for quite an extended period too, not just a poor first reaction or something). All for something she had no control over whatsoever. And she's already in such a pathetic position, she's just lost everyone she's ever known, lost the opportunity she's spent her whole life working toward, she's been dropped into a terrifying new world filled with creatures who wish to harm her, her health is actively deteriorating, and none of it is her fault! She even tries to be understanding and to make things better. Who could even kick someone when they're so far down? Plus, I understand that there would be some very difficult things to face given his history, but he's already bound to her for eternity, and she's perfect for him in every other way- so really the drawback is that she'll especially need to regularly give and receive sexual pleasure? Oh boo hoo, you poor baby! lol He had a very sympathetic backstory, and I really wanted to be in his corner, but that's just not a free pass to abuse an innocent and vulnerable person (much less your one fated mate in all of space and time lol)! Otherwise it was written well, so 3 stars.

This book was fantastic. I was angry at Will for most of the book but when he finally got his head out, he was a great guy! The idea of a transitioning mate isn't new but this was so different from the transitioning valkyrie tale. One thing, is that this book had a much more devastating cliff hanger than any of the others in the series and I just can't wait for the next book!

I think this one was the saddest of the series. Such pain and angst coming from MacRieve and then because of him, from Chloe. They were such a strong couple, each with their own individualities, strengths and messed up lives. Together they were scorching, the chemistry out of this world and so sad.

It's difficult for a series with so many books to still maintain the quality of writing, world building an character development from its earlier books. This is one of them.

    Irresistibly good.

DAYUM!!! I couldn't wait to get my hands on another IAD installment, and it was SO worth the wait! Will was such a dick! GAWD I wanted to just kick his wolfie ass so many, many times! I can't believe I cried... that rarely happens, even if a book moves me. SO GOOD! And the epilogue... UGH! I can't wait for the next one. *heavy sigh*

Loved the main characters here. Chloe is a professional soccer player on her way to the Olympics, hard-working and full of grit. Will, or MacRieve, is the tormented Lykae clan chief determined to destroy Chloe because of her father's torture of him. When he discovers that Chloe is his mate, then all that changes and it is quite an adjustment for both of them. The sex scenes were hot and the story was well-paced and interesting. I'm looking forward to what happens in the next book with Will's twin, Munroe.

My singular complaint in regards to this book...ok I lied, I have two, was that it was a might predictable and that it wouldn't go on forever. Kresley Cole has a writing style that drags me into the story, sits me down, and tells me to watch carefully before ripping my heart out and piecing it back together before my eyes.

I laughted, I cried, I squeed...oh and I read this thing in one night. Also not five minutes into the story I had to go WTF NIX. smdh (I dont consider this a spoiler since we say this in everybook).

I liked this one as I do all her others. Some how a millionn books in this series later I am still interested and that takes work.

I blazed through this book within twenty-four hours. Kresley Cole, J.D. Robb, and George R.R. Martin are the only three authors that I would buy their books without reading the synopsis first. She has such control over her characters and uses charm that only endears them to the reader. MacReive and Chloe were such a great couple. They had the perfect amount of sassiness and tenacity that it wasn't annoying like most romance novels I've read. Kresley Cole's books have charm, steam, humor and that extra oomph which makes my hands always glued to the book.

Can I just say that I am not happy about how this book ended? I hate cliff hangers; anyone that really knows me knows this is true. I especially hate them when it is going to be a year or more before I find out what happens. I mean the next book is Melanthe's story which many of you have been waiting a long time for. I had waited for so long to catch up on this series so I could avoid having to wait for a book that would answer questions. I guess I didn't wait long enough. I guess I should just accept the injustice of cliff hangers and get on with this review. So the last time we saw Uilleam “Will” MacRieve he was on the prison island of the Order gathering the rest of the “good shifters” so they could protect the weaker ones and defend against the evil Loreans. The Order has dredged up all the old wounds that Will thought he had dealt with over the centuries. He is unprepared for his mate and that she is succubus as well as Commander Webb’s is more than he can take. It takes almost losing her for him to see that he needs her more than he knows. He does come around and learns that fate has had a hand in his finding his mate for longer than he knew.I liked Will for the most part. He is another extremely wound alpha warrior. He has survived so much and has carried so much anger, self-hatred and guilt that it is a wonder he is as sane as he is. For all his faults he loves his twin brother and his clan. He is a caring and compassionate Lykea. I am surprised that he wasn't gunning for Nix. She did betray him after all. It was for a good cause but Lykea don’t seem to take betrayal well. It was wonderful that he came to see the error of his prejudice. I was also pleased that he learned to control his beast so well. Finally I loved that he was so dominant.Chloe Todd has a wonderful career, a chance at the Olympics and a loving father. She is a strong, intelligent, driven individual that gives her all to whatever endeavor she takes on. She tries very hard to accept her changes to an immortal with little preparation from her father. I am not sure I would have hung on as long as she did when Will was being such an ass. I know that at first it was because she was safe and guard from the rest of the Lore. They wanted her very badly. I also realize now that her instinct was to stay with her mate, even though she didn’t know she could have that kind of connection with anyone.I am very worried about her father. I have a feeling that mixing so many Lore races into one package has damaged his precarious hold on reality. He seems very unbalanced when he walks away from her. Nix’s warning about an apocalypse is also very disturbing. I mean the Ascension sounds bad enough but an apocalypse is very scary. I have to wonder what all these pairing will provide toward a win for the good guys. Nix seems very busy moving pieces on the board.

I couldn't hardly put this book down, and when I 'had' to it was like ripping apart of myself away. I fell in love with both characters. Cole knows how to pull on heart strings and encourage those twinges below the belt...

The couple in this book had obstacle after obstacle to face, just when they might be getting along- Cole provides a new twist and the reader and characters are thrown back down the tunnel.

MacRieve is a dark twisted wolf, he's been hurt- bvad- and getting past those issues, well let's just say he might not be able to. But then having your heart shown to you when you can't do a damn thing about it- will do that.

Chloe- Bad guy daughter auctioned off by witches, her body isn't her own, and then she's held captive by the twisted wolf, MacRieve... things couldn't possibly get any worse right?

Bothy these characters are fully fleshed out. Point of views stay consistent and I found myself connecting to both. I had high hopes that eventually they would both see their path but the stubborn couple is just that- both head strong- both fighting for what they want.
I loved that Chloe wasn't the average girl- the average woman even. Cole is known for strong females- but Chloe takes the cake with her profession and her intelligence. I was in awe.

This goes to show, with every book i read from Cole, why Kresley is my favorite author.
Like paranormal- a twisted dark hero and strong female- pick it up- it can stand alone in the series- and you won't regret meeting the characters.

Smart-mouthed and tough, the pint-size soccer player known as Baby T-rex packs a punch on and off the field. But it's not much help to bound-for-the-Olympics star Chloe Todd when she's packed up like so much laundry and tossed onto an auction block for the bidding pleasure of a ravening crowd of immortals. One whiff of the lovely human's scent tells Uilleam MacRieve that at long last he's found the mate he's spent centuries searching for. She's the daughter of his worst enemy, but he has to have her - except Chloe has another secret, one that even she doesn't know. One that may see Will tearing Chloe to bloody scraps....Picked this up at the library in desperation, and was surprised to find myself grinning at Chloe as she navigated strange immortal waters. The overarching plot is easy to pick up, since the focus is more on the romance between the main characters.

I love this latest offering in the Immortals After Dark series. Uilleam MacRieve is a Lykae who has survived physical and emotional torture such that he has withdrawn from his clan and the world. He feels he is too twisted and dark to ever be fixed. He seeks only vengeance against those who wronged him and, realizing that is out of his reach, death in the Fyre Dragan, a pit of flames so intense they can even kill an immortal. MacRieve is given a sliver of hope when he learns the daughter of the infamous Commander Preston Webb, leader of the Order seeking the extinction of the immortals, has been capture and offered up for auction. If he can use her for revenge he can die with some semblance of peace. Fickle fate intervenes, and it turns out Chloe, Webb's daughter, is MacReive's mate. Chloe had no idea that immortals existed, much less her father's role in their world. It is clear, however, that this mortal young woman is going through some emotional and physical changes of her own that may be too much for MacReive to overcome. This book has a lot less violence than some of Cole's other IAD novels, focusing much more on the strained relationship between MacReive and Chloe. Childhood abuse for him and a loss of the life she knew for her seem insurmountable obstacles. Seeing MacRieve be on the verge of a breakthrough and pulling back time and again leads to some heartbreaking scenes. There is also a nice surprise twist toward the end. I always look forward to reading the IAD books, and this one definitely delivered.

    Oh wow. Wow wow wow.
MacRieve is awesome. He's a hottie (Hotter!!), protective, strong, and a huuuuuge idiot.
But he redeems himself in the 90th minute. And right on time.
Chloe is such a great female character. Loved that she's not a pushover, has her own self and knows herself enough and values herself enough to not rely on a man. Especially a dummy like Will is throughout most of the book. Lol
And Nix - what a character. She cracks me up constantly. I wish she had a mate too. That would be hysterical. He'd have to be just as nutty.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Seems like the Accession is upon us more than ever. Can't wait for Munro's story. I have a feeling his journey will be the toughest. Poor lad.

One thing I will say about Ms. Cole. She doesn't write weak heroines. Chloe is one tough chick, even as she starts off human. She's a professional soccer. Her ancestry is apparent at the beginning. We find out in breadcrumbs throughout the entire book.

Uilleam (Will MacRieve) is a werewolf with a tortured past. If you've read previous books of this series, you know his most recent torments. At the very beginning of this book, you will learn of his even more tortured past as a child. This is the past that really sticks with him and is trying to hurt his future with his mate. Because of this past, he can't see her for who she is.

Nix makes several appearances, which is wonderful. She is more lucid and coherent. I think most like her better when she isn't as coherent. Still, I'll take her any way I can get her.

I'm disappointed with the ending. I don't like how things were left with Webb. I think Chloe should've killed him when he started talking about slaughtering humans because they were weak. I was proud of MacRieve, but I think Chloe should've been strong enough to kill him. I'm sure that Ms. Cole has a plan for him down the road. By the end of this story, you will know who the next story will be about. It is left with a bit of cliffhanger.

You can find this review at My Favorite Things (heffroberts.blogspot.com)MacRieve by Kresley Cole is the thirteenth book in the Immortals After dark series. The tale begins with Uilleam as a child in Scotland. We learn exactly what happened in his tragic past and just how terrible his demons are.Chloe is a soccer star - she's competitive and capable and freaky things are starting to happen to her. She is abducted by witches and put up for auction. Oh, yeah, and she's human.Imagine attending an auction with the sole purpose of winning the bid for your greatest enemies most treasured possession. Now imagine the possession is the enemies human daughter. Now imagine realizing that this human female is your one true mate. And so this is a perfect representation of the luck MacRieve has had his whole life.Audible Audiobook "Review: Immortals After Dark #13: MacRieve"Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?I would reccommend this audiobook to anyone who has read and loved the Immortals After Dark series.Who was your favorite character and why?MacRieve. He's so angry and alpha and intense, but loyal to a fault when it counts.Which scene was your favorite?Any scene where Chloe was kicking MacRieve's butt was good, she is fiesty and strong, but probably the love scene after Chloe returns from her family and needs MacRieve to be true to their love in order to survive.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?I felt a lot of heartache for MacRieve AND Chloe throughout this story. He has had so many bad things happen to him that you can't fault him for his prejudice, but Chloe doesn't deserve the things he dished out in anger.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.allthingsuf.comAs with any Immortals after Dark book, MACRIEVE offers romance, violence, and slap stick comedy. In addition to this tried and true receipt, however, is a blend of gender politics and psychological scarring that may have less universal appeal. Chloe Todd’s transition from cut-throat, professional athlete to Lorean mate is a high point, and Cole did a great job blending the skills and mentality of a top athlete with the grit necessary to survive in the supernatural world.Unfortunately, it is just that aggressive personality that plays into some of the less appealing gender role content in MACRIEVE. MacRieve was sexually abused by a succubus when he was a child, a succubus who used emotion, magic, and many of the traditionally attributed “feminine wiles” to manipulate him. When an unexpected trigger reminds MacRieve of his trauma, Chloe’s tomboy persona is raised from appealing to glorified. It is as if Chloe is a good person because she doesn’t care about her appearance, or she’s a good person because she doesn’t share her emotions to try and “manipulate” MacRieve. Many times Chloe could justifiably say, “That hurt my feelings,” but mature conversation about the fact that MacRieve is being a dick seems to be viewed as blackmail (but calling MacRieve names and yelling at him is perfectly ok). Don’t get me wrong, I liked Chloe quite a bit and MacRieve’s issues are valid and well structured. Underneath it all, however, was an uncomfortable message about gender identity and “appropriate” behavior. These themes distracted me from the story and lowered my enjoyment over all.My 3bat rating for MACRIEVE has more to do with the triggers embedded in the plot than any flaw in writing or character. Some readers will float right over them and enjoy this book to the hilt, some will hit a wall with the first mention of child molesting or gender expectations and never finish it at all. For myself, the gender issues were a little distracting, but not to the extent that I couldn’t enjoy this trip back to the Lore. Glimpses of Nix and Malkom were appreciated, the humor and violence were spot on, and I can’t wait for my next taste of Immortals After Dark!Sexual Content: Scenes of child molesting, references to rape, sex scenes.
