Winners
Lily Thomas is an aspiring ski champion training for the Olympics, a young woman with her heart set on winning the gold. But in one moment, Lily's future is changed forever, her hopes for the Olympics swept away in a tragic accident.
Dr. Jessie Matthews, the neurosurgeon who operates on her that night, endures a tragedy of her own, and instantly becomes the sole support of her four young children, while her own future hangs in the balance.
Bill, Lily's father, has pinned all his hopes on his only daughter, his dreams now shattered.
Other lives will entwine themselves with theirs: Joe, a financial manager, faces a ruined career at the hand of a dishonest partner. Carole, a psychologist at Mass General, is a breast cancer survivor, her body and heart scarred by what she's been through. Teddy, with a spinal cord injury worse than Lily's, dreams of college and becoming an artist.
From the ashes of their lives, six people fight to alter the course of destiny and refuse to be defeated. When Bill builds a remarkable rehab facility for his daughter, countless lives are forever altered, and each becomes a winner.
Winners is about refusing to be beaten, no matter how insurmountable the challenge. And when Lily gets on skis again and enters the Paralympics, the battle to brave life again is won.
Winners is about more than surviving, it is about courage, victory, and triumph. When all appears to be lost, the battle has just begun.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Winners by Danielle SteelLove this author's book and can't ever seem to read them all. this one is about Lily and she's training to be an Olympic skiier. She lives with her father-her mother died when she was the age of 3.After the accident he takes her on a world wide trip to find a doctor that will tell her there is a cure for her injury. They do not find that though and she goes home to go to rehab where others have broken off their friendship. The book also follows the doctor, Jessie who operated on her for 11 hours. At the end she learns of her husband's death and she goes home to take care of the kids. Her path and Bill's meet over time as they discuss Lily's progress and he finds out about her life with the kids.Loved hearing how Lily is at rehab and the pain and progress she has to overcome while doing class work. Others at the center help as they've been through it before.Paying it forward in the way of a scholarship/school for others who are afflicted with the same type of injury brought tears to my eyes. What I like the best is the different ages of those who are effected and how they strive to make the world a better place for not only them or their loved ones. I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Chronicling the first year after tragedy strikes two families, Steel’s latest grapples with the long, painful road to recovery. When a Tahoe ski lift breaks with Olympic hopeful Lily and her coach onboard, the coach is killed and Lily severely injured. Lily’s operated on by neurosurgeon Dr. Jessie Mathews, who determines that the girl’s spinal-cord injury means that Lily will never walk again, much less compete in the Olympics. Lily’s single-parent father, Bill, is devastated, since Lily has been his life after his wife’s death. Unbeknownst to Jessie, while she’s operating on Lily, her husband, Tim, and son Jimmy are in a car accident. Tim dies instantly; Jimmy survives without injury. While Jessie works to keep her four children from despair, Bill first goes through total denial, and then, when Jessie’s diagnosis is confirmed by other doctors and Lily is in Denver’s Craig Hospital, he decides to build Lily Pad, a center for young spinal-cord patients. Steel’s unflinching look at the highs and lows of Bill’s and Jessie’s lives will leave readers crying and cheering.— Pat Henshaw
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5AUTHOR: Steel, DanielleTITLE: Winners Date Read: 02/15/14RATING: 4.5/B+GENRE/PUB DATE/PUBLISHER/# OF PGS: Fiction/2013/Random House/334 pgsSERIES/STAND ALONE: S/ATIME/PLACE: Present/ Squaw Valley, CA & Denver, COCHARACTERS: Lily/ 17 yr-old training for Olympic ski event; Bill Thomas/father FIRST LINES: Lily Thomas lay in bed when the alarm went off on a snowy January morning in Squaw Valley. COMMENTS: In this story the main characters had a tragic event in their life that they all had to overcome and in the end they were winners. Lily only 17 had a skiing accident that ended her hopes for the Olympics but she learned how to adjust and lead a full life. She even learns to monoski. Her father had to accept that his daughter would not walk again & overcame this by building a center for children w/ spinal cord injuries. Dr. Jessie Matthews is a neurosurgeon and mother of 4 & very happily married until her husband dies in an auto accident. The demands and challenges of her existing job and family seem overwhelming until she is offered a new position. There are several other major characters that also come through some harrowing experiences from cancer, marital break-ups, loss of business etc. In each case we see hope and a future. An uplifting book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed this one.
This was the story of Lily a 17 year old who was in accident and became a paraplegic and how she and her dad learn to deal with it.
Before her accident Lily was training for the Olympics, how does this change that?
Because of this accident lives are changed. Danielle did a great job of bringing in just the right number of characters that I was able to care about all of them (or dislike them).
Well done - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What can I say? I love Danielle Steel books, and this latest one did not disappoint me. It's not great literature, but it's entertaining and a quick read.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very predictable. No drama.
Not one of her best stories ever - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A truly inspiring story of love and courage!
It shows that things have a way of working out for us if we keep working at it
