About this audiobook

National Readers’ Choice Awards finalist in Romantic Suspense

Danger once again laps at the shores of Barkley Sound, the Graveyard of the Pacific…

Since her rocky childhood and its abrupt, brutal ending, schoolteacher Anna Silver hasn’t given her trust easily. But when her estranged father gets in over his head—again—and winds up dead, his last message to Anna is as clear as it is insistent: she’s in danger and Brent Carver, the man with whom he shared a prison cell for five years, is the only person she should turn to for help. With nowhere else to go and with her father’s killer on her trail, Anna flees to what she hopes is safety.

Tucked into the west coast of Vancouver Island, Brent Carver’s isolated home hasn’t seen many visitors. And his friend’s daughter is the last person he ever expected to grace his doorstep. She’s in trouble, and he can’t deny her protection…just as he can’t deny his attraction to the independent beauty. As their passion sparks into flame, the perfect storm brews off the coast of his island home, bringing with it a sadistic killer hunting Anna and the secrets she’s come close to uncovering.

Anna Silver is jolted out of the safe but boring life she has made for herself when she gets a phone call from her ex-con father Davis who says he has stumbled on a plot to steal $60 million which he has diverted and moved to another account. He says he is sending her proof and wants her to go to his best friend to keep her safe. Then her father is killed.Anna travels to an isolated part of British Colombia to see Brent Carver who was her father's cellmate when he was in prison and who is his best friend. Brent was sentence to life in prison at the age of sixteen for killing his father who was beating Brent's younger brother again. Brent feels guilty for killing the father he loved. So guilty that he has isolated himself from anyone who might get close to him. He discovered a talent for art while in prison and is now a famous painter though he uses another name.Brent will do anything to keep from going back to prison. He isn't eager to get involved when Anna comes to see him. But he owes her father a debt because of their friendship. And, besides, he is halfway in love with Anna because of the letters she wrote her father that he read aloud over and over again. The villains are ex-military who earned their money doing black ops and mercenary activities. They will do anything to get their money back and really want the information Anna's father mailed to her. The prime villain is a loony named Rand who gets off on raping and torturing women. Finding Anna will give him the opportunity to do that as well as get their money back. Another plot thread features Anna's mother Katherine and her second husband Ed. Katherine didn't handle her first husband's conviction as an embezzler well but Ed was their to pick up the pieces. Now she is stronger and beginning to resent how controlling Ed is. When she finds out that her first husband has died, she feels a mixture of guilt and grief. The story is filled with action and excitement. It is also filled with Anna and Brent falling in love despite the obstacles of their backgrounds and their current problems. I enjoyed this story very much and look forward to more by Toni Anderson.

After spending 20 years in prison, Brent Carver cherishes the quiet of his remote home on Vancouver Island. But his solitude is interrupted when Anna Silver arrives on his doorstep with the news that her father, Brent's former cellmate, has died under mysterious circumstances, and she needs his help. Soon the two are on the run from a sadistic killer who will stop at nothing to retrieve what he believes he deserves...

Unlike Dangerous Waters, which did not completely resonate with me, this book is an intense and exciting read with an excellent romance.

Brent is the real highlight of the book - smart, stoic and sexy to boot. It is impossible not to sympathize with a man who lost everything due to one split-second choice. It is clear that he got the short end of the stick due to a shoddy legal system. It takes longer to warm up to Anna as she is rather prickly (understandable given her past), and has a tendency to speak before she thinks. Nevertheless, she grows as the story progresses and develops into a strong and admirable heroine. Brent and Anna's relationship is slow burn as they overcome their inhibitions, but once they do - watch out!

The suspense plot is a pretty straightforward pursuit tale with some exhilarating action scenes. That said, there are several predictable twists, such as the "revelation" that Anna's father was framed by his ex-wife's new husband and the fact that Anna was raped by her stepbrother.

In sum, this is one of those times where the sequel is better than the the original.

Anna Silver's father contacts her with a cell phone message that he is in trouble and tells her that he has mailed proof of illegal activities in his current company to a place where she will know to find it. For her safety and protection, he sends her to his former cellmate, Brent Carver. Right after he gets the message off, Anna's father is killed by a subway train. Anna knows his death wasn't an accident, so she follows his instructions, putting her in touch with a man she hoped she'd never meet. Brent's loyalty to Anna's father doesn't allow him to turn her away when she comes seeking help, but it isn't long before he and Anna realize that the trouble stirred up by her father would put them both in mortal danger.

Dark Waters is what a romantic suspense book should be. There is a lot of action and adventure along with a dandy mystery for the reader to solve right along with the characters. The love story between the two protagonists is believable and steamy, while the characters search for clues and stay one step ahead of the enemy. There are some points in the story when the reader must suspend disbelief, but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of the story. Although some of the problems are resolved a bit quickly and the denouement is a little corny, overall Dark Waters is a very sound romantic suspense story with multiple layers that keep it interesting.

DARK WATERS is the second romantic suspense novel I’ve read by Toni Anderson, and like the first, I really enjoyed it. Ms. Anderson has a knack for blending sizzling romance, angsty, well-drawn characters, and nail-biting suspense into a riveting read. This story begins with Anna Silver receiving a frantic voice mail message from her father just before he dies. He’s an ex-con who’s found trouble again, and now Anna’s life is threatened. Her father tells her to find safety with Brent Carver, a man he shared a prison cell with for many years.Since being released from prison four years earlier, Brent has shut himself off from the world. He makes a living as a reclusive yet very successful artist, and he doesn’t venture far from his secluded home on Vancouver Island. Brent’s none too thrilled about a strange woman invading his private space, but when he finds out Anna is his best friend’s daughter and hears her tragic story, he can’t turn her away.Anna and Brent – wow, these two were lugging some heavy emotional baggage. I’m not sure which one had been wronged the most, but my heart went out to both of them. Understandably, they had major trust issues, yet somehow they made their relationship work. On top of that, Anna had a truly evil baddie on her tail wanting something of her deceased father’s. The villain was horrid! Not happy to just get the information from Anna, but he had to be a sadistic you-know-what too, playing on her fears. He made me cringe.DARK WATERS was a fast paced, entertaining romantic suspense novel that was heavier on the darker “thriller” elements, which I liked. My only quibble was that I found it hard to believe Brent went to prison for 20 years for his crime, considering he was 16 at the time and there were extenuating circumstances. Still, it was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to fans of the genre.Source: Review copy through the Amazon Vine Program

Reviewed by Geminifor Read Your Writes Book ReviewsThis was by far the most action packed book that I have read to-date. The storytelling moved along like a big-budget movie. There was murder, mystery, deceit, and...sex. I could visualize everything that happened in this book just as if it were playing on my big screen TV. To say that I was more than impressed would be an understatement. Dark Waters is the story of Anna Silver and her unexpected search to find out the truth behind the so-called accidental death of her father, Davis Silver and his supposed theft of $60 million. There is an extensive cast of characters that include several former military guys, an ex-con, and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Everything about this book keeps you on your toes until the final chapter. To make things even more like a script from Hollywood, the ex-con plays the hero. In short, Davis Silver discovers a money laundering scheme that gets him killed. His daughter enlists the help of Davis’ former cellmate, Brent Carver. Brent spent time in prison for murdering his father. I could give you more details but...you will just have to read the book to figure out the rest. I will say that there is enough baggage surrounding the main characters that it could fill an airport terminal. Either way, hands down the best book that I have read this year. Source: Blog Tour Host
