About this audiobook

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan knows what it’s like to be haunted by the past. For years after her daughter, Bonnie, was stolen from her, she fought for closure. When her mother, Sandra, asks Eve to find a missing friend named Beth Avery, she wants to help but is sure that Sandra is hiding something. The fact that she adamantly refuses to go to the police reinforces Eve’s suspicions that something is very wrong.

Eve learns that Beth has been locked away in a mental hospital for years, which makes it even harder to understand how she could have disappeared. As Sandra reluctantly reveals small pieces of the truth about Beth’s identity, Eve is shocked to discover that their lives are strangely entwined, and Beth’s disappearance now puts them all in grave danger.

Desperate, Eve enlists a secret weapon to pick up Beth’s trail: rogue profiler Kendra Michaels. With an uncanny ability to detect clues and solve puzzles, Kendra begins to uncover the bizarre circumstances of Beth’s escape from what should have been the safety of her hospital room. Beth is on the run, and as her mind clears—detoxing from the drugs that have held her prisoner—she begins to see the threads of a twisted plot within the powerful Avery family, threatening to destroy her and anyone else who might jeopardize the high-stakes game that is already in play.

I picked this book up because Greg Iles is a great gritty, murder mystery author but I have to say I was disappointed in this book. It is probably because I wasn't expecting the supernatural element to it. I like my murder mysteries to be plausable. If it wasn't for that it would have been a great read.

Eve and Joe are once again thrown into a myriad of murder and mayhem when it’s discovered that Eve’s not her mother Sandra’s only child. No the year before Eve was conceived Sandra had another daughter, Beth who’s politically and prominent paternal family literally bought the child from the arms of 14 year old Sandra. Unbeknown to Eve Sandra has kept up with this child, from her childhood in European boarding schools, to her nearly fatal skiing accident and now to her disappearance from the mental hospital she’s been in all the years since. Sandra wants Joe’s help to find Beth and although Eve has mixed feelings about the discovery and Sandra’s request, she and Joe go to find Beth. What they discover goes deep into the realm of criminal, psychopathic and even sociopathic behavior and the ultimate mastermind will shock everyone involved even the newly discovered sisters who’s encounter has been halting and disquieting. and who’s survival is questionable at the least.Iris Johansen has entertained and terrified me for years with her Eve Duncan thrillers as well as her stand-a-lone and co-authored novels with her son Roy. She never disappoints me and in this one she shocks me to find yet another avenue for her protagonist Eve Duncan to travel when she throws an un-known sister into her plot. The storyline is as incredible as it is imaginative with twists and evil turns one after another as she speeds me along on her on her fast pace, nail-biting journey. Her tried and true characters are joined by an old friend from her last book co-authored with her son Roy along with new stars on each side of the morality fence. Even though this is not a romance novel the love scenes between Eve and Joe never cease to awe me in their intensity and honesty and above all their love for each other. If you’ve never read Iris, it’s definitely worth your while to do so and even though this is part of a many novel series it stands well on it’s own.To you Ms. Johansen I say thank you for your wonderful stories, your great characters and your inventive plot lines. I can’t wait to see where you take me on our next adventure.

I love Iris Johansen's books, this was no exception. I was intrigued by the addition of Beth Avery and her relationship to Eve. I have come to realize that most of the women in the books seem to be self-absorbed and varying degrees of selfish. Eve's mother is a horrible woman, but until these last few books I didn't see it coming out in Eve - Beth is similar as well. I enjoyed the book. I am looking forward to the rest of the series - who knows...

I am ambivalent about this novel. I had an accurate appraisal of the story line when I was about 40% through the book, I plodded along hoping that I was wrong but I was not.

Sleep No More is my first exposure to anything written by Greg Iles and, in fairness to him, I want to stress that I experienced the novel in audio book format, not as a printed version. Although the book’s narrator did grow on me over the course of the book's ten CDs, his lack of preparation irritated me a number of times. For instance, the man had no idea that Schlumberger is not pronounced to rhyme with hamburger. Schlumberger is a French oil field service company, one of the largest in the world, and to hear its name mispronounced a dozen or so times in quick succession became a major distraction. In addition, several of the book’s characters are from Louisiana and, in dealing with them, the narrator managed to mispronounce a city or two from that state and speak in one of the least authentic Cajun accents I have ever heard. So remember that I am reviewing an audio book here – not simply a Greg Iles novel – and that one point has been deducted from my rating based on the quality of the audio work. The storyline of Sleep No More is an intriguing one that kept me guessing for a long time whether I was reading a straight crime novel or a Stephen Kingish horror novel. Its principle character is John Waters, who while attending the University of Mississippi had a passionate (and destructive) affair with a young woman who became Miss Mississippi while they were involved. Sadly, just a few years later, Mallory Candler was raped and murdered in New Orleans. Before her death, however, her bizarre behavior almost cost John Waters his life.Years later, John Waters is married, has a little girl, and is making a good living as a Mississippi oil wildcatter. His is a risky business, but he has been successful more times than not. All is well in John's world until a beautiful young woman approaches him on the soccer field after one of his daughter’s matches. The woman, Eve Sumner, leaves John with a knowing look and the same whispered word that he and Mallory exchanged when they wanted to sneak away together. He is spooked by the encounter and cannot stop thinking about it. Before long, and despite his best intentions, John is involved in a torrid affair with Eve Sumner. As she reveals more and more details that could have only been known by him and Mallory, John begins to believe that Mallory’s soul has taken over Eve Sumner’s body. Soon, John will be involved in a battle to save more than his marriage – the lives of his wife and daughter are at stake.Sleep No More is a better mystery than it is a horror novel. Its best moments come when John is trying to determine exactly what is happening to him, whether or not he can trust his partner and best friend, and his fight to stay out of prison. The horror aspect of the novel is not nearly so satisfying, at least in part because of the lack of closure provided by the book’s final pages. Greg Iles fans will have to tell me if this one is representative of his work. If so, I will likely pass on the others. Rated at: 3.0

Such a far-fetched story was not what I expected from a Greg Iles book! The characters were believable and the narrative superb, but the plot itself was weak and did not work as a ghost story at all. Stick to the Penn Cage thrillers!

I liked the book to one extent but was not prepared for the supernatural element. Not saying that I'm opposed to such things because I love reading supernatural books, but I wasn't expecting it coming from Iles. So because it threw me off and didn't seem to 'fit' with what I'd read from him before, this affected my overall enjoyment of the novel.

I love the combination of Eve and Kendra!Quick Thoughts: Sleep No More combined great characters, a masterful plot, and a quick pace to produce one heck of a read. I really enjoyed seeing Kendra (from her other series) work with Eve in this story. The added element of Eve's sister (that she didn't know about) being thrown into the mix really added oomph to the story. (NOTE: I am kind of hoping that Eve's sister becomes part of Kendra's series). Eve is a fascinating character and her growth in this book was amazing. At its heart, Sleep No More is a mystery/thriller but Iris has a way of throwing in a compelling human aspect that makes me love her books. I highly suggest checking out her work.Audio Thoughts: Narrated by Elisabeth Rodgers (who does a fantastic job) this is a book/series that I would recommend on Audio. Elisabeth does a great job with pacing and narration of Eve and Kendra.Final Thoughts: Sleep No More was an excellent addition to the series and I can't wait to see where it goes from here!
