About this audiobook

A determined mother becomes entangled in a murderous conspiracy to keep a twenty-year-old secret buried in this blistering thriller, set during the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, from Andrew Gross, the New York Times bestselling author of 15 Seconds and No Way Back

While driving along a suburban back road, Hilary Cantor, who's just lost her job and whose deadbeat husband has left her to care for her son who has Asperger's, witnesses a freakish accident when a deer suddenly darts in front of the car ahead of her. The driver careens down a hill and slams into a tree. Rushing to help, she discovers the car smoking, the driver dead—and a satchel on the floor stuffed with a half million dollars.

That money could prevent her family's ruin and keep her son in school. In an instant, this honest, achieving woman who has always done the responsible thing makes a decision that puts her in the center of a maelstrom of unforeseeable consequences and life-threatening recriminations. It isn't long before someone comes looking for the money, and as they get closer and closer to Hilary, she is pulled into a terrifying scheme involving a twenty-year-old murder, an old woman whose entire life has been washed out to sea by the storm, and a powerful figure determined to maintain the secret that can destroy him.

With everything to lose and putting everything she loves at risk, Hilary joins up with a dogged police official from Staten Island who has his own connections to the money and is dealing with his family's tragic struggles in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Together they must fight to bring down an enemy who will stop at nothing to keep buried what that money was meant to silence.

Everything to Lose is a propulsive thriller filled with tension and unexpected twists. Pitting an ordinary woman against powerful and desperate figures, this explosive and heartbreaking tale of suspense will appeal to readers of Harlan Coben, Lee Child, and David Baldacci.

I found myself completely wrapped up in the story and the characters. Andrew Gross has managed to put an ordinary, everyday person into a breathtakingly suspenseful and dangerous situation and works his magic with the twists and turns that will keep the reader turning the pages to see how it all turns out. All the time you have to ask yourself... "In Hillary's situation would I have done the same thing to protect my family?"

Everything to Lose by Andrew Gross is a fast-paced, complex, suspense thriller, a conspiracy, with dark buried secrets, and murder for an intense ride!

Set in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Hilary Cantor, is a divorced mother of a seven-year old son, with Asperger's Syndrome. She has tons of medical bills and expensive schooling for her son, and her number one priority is taking care of her son and getting him the care he needs.

Hilary has just lost her job and her husband has not paid his child support. (he is remarried with his own family).
So, her last resort, is driving to her ex-husband’s house, since he will not return her calls. She needs to get money from him in order to help Brandon. While driving, she is taking a different route than normal and rounds a curve and she sees a car ahead of her swerve to avoid hitting a deer, a freak accident.

The car spins out of control, plunges over the embankment and she sets out to see if she can help, but it is too late. The man is dead; however, she sees a bag of money (a half a million) on the front seat. Her first instinct is to leave it; however, she thinks maybe this is the answer to her prayers, as she is desperate. She decides to throw the bag into the woods, and come back for it later-If she can bring herself to do so… she has to think it over.

Over the course of the next few days, she is on the fence between right and wrong, the outcome, and what she can or cannot do, while looking at her options, which are slim. Another driver sees the accident (minus the money bag throwing), and he says he will wait on the police. She then goes to her ex-husband’s house and he offers little or no assistance, as he has had to close his business and his wife is keeping them afloat.

Can she do this? What if? Whose money is it and will she get caught? In the meantime, she does her own investigation to learn more about the man driving the car. He is a regular down to earth older man with a nice family, and he is no way could be mixed up in this kind of money, and locates his son.

What happens next sets on a course of high-suspense as all the pieces begin to connect. The writing and plot, tight and brilliant - the way the different characters from years ago, are leading up to this one day, when they collide.

When the original plan of one person to help another, becomes something bigger, caught up in a dark past and secrets of a political official’s past, and now the bad guy is looking for the money, plus all the people connected to that dark secret. With an added bonus of a man who risks it all to help her along with a child’s love.

A heart-pounding suspense crime thriller, and page turner which is hard to put down. What made this book so incredible is the realism- it could actually happen. When faced with these choices, what would you do to protect your child?

I listened to the audiobook and Tavia Gilbert was outstanding – a great combo. This was my first book by Gross and look forward to reading more!

Great story line, with more twists and turns than a runaway train, keeps your interest till the final pages and the ending will hit accross the head with its conclusion.

Hillary Blum is a caring mother whose son has Asperger’s. She is also struggling since her ex-husband is no help at all. She witnesses a car accident and when she tries to help (the driver is dead), she discovers a bag full of money. Instead of leaving it, she tosses it into the woods and days later, desperation overtakes her and she retrieves the half million dollars. All this could better her life and the life of her son but someone else is looking for that money and eventually her and will do anything to get it back. It’s a story that’s been done before in different variations, but Andrew Gross has written a strong female character in Hillary who also narrates her story. As the story unfolds, it is filled with action, great chases and a lot of tension. I found it be a thrilling read and recommend it.

The author does so much better writing on his own instead of with Patterson. This story had substance and was not watered down. When a woman stops to try to help a man who's car was in an accident, she is faced with a dilemma....and makes a choice. The choice turns out t be the wrong one. It costs many lives while solving a decades old mirder. Excellent!
