About this audiobook
Major George Eyster V comes from a family of military officers dating back to the Revolutionary War. His tour of duty in Iraq, however, left him disillusioned and questioning. Then he accepted a posting to J-PAC, an elite division whose mission is to fulfill the most solemn promise of the military code: bring all fallen soldiers home to the country for which they gave their lives. In 1944 Captain Ryan McCown, a dashing young Marine aviator assigned to the USS Nassau, was shot down over the jungles of Papua, New Guinea. McCown#8217;s diaries and letters home provide a powerful portrait of the fears and sacrifices of a very different war-and the pathos of the ultimate cost of duty.Eyster#8217;s mission with J-PAC eventually took him and his team deep into the sweltering interior of New Guinea to at last deliver this fallen veteran to his loved ones-while perhaps also recovering something lost in himself.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This Early Reviewers audio book was a real treat. Following a couple of generations of military men and their families, it focuses on the day to day life of these people particularly during war time. The writer clearly cares about these young men and their sacrifice. The book was a bit confusion in the back and forth of time and character, but that might not have been the case had I not been listening to it. It was well-written and extremely interesting.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I was privileged to be able to have not only the written book but also the audio version as well. The man who reads the story did an excellent job. He read with feeling and made the story come alive. The story itself had an enormous amount of detail in some parts of the book which made it kind of dry at times but all in all the story was a good one. I found it fascinating that it is a true story and that I could actually look up the characters on google and read more in depth about them. It brought to my attention the amount of work that was done in order to find the lost servicemen's remains. Some of the characters in the story are still alive today and I really enjoyed reading about their adventures.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Bryan Bender's in-depth research really brought this story to life. I wished he would have focused a bit more on the current story about George and JPAC. Ryan's tale was certainly very interesting, too, but I got a bit confused listening to the audiobook as the author jumped between the two storylines. All was made clear in the end, though, and the story was more poignant for it. Overall, this is a very well researched and written book. And a must read for anyone who knows someone who has served in the military or is in the service themselves.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Interesting stories. Excellent narrator. Thumbs up!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5When I got this audiobook from the Librarything Early Reviewers program, I expected it to be a bit on the dry side, full of facts and numbers. I was pleasantly surprised. The book tells several stories. We meet and ride along with a WWII pilot, learn about his life, his family and his commitment to what he does. We also meet and ride along with a present-day military man, learn about his life, his family name and its legacy, and HIS commitment to what he does. The story is engrossing and I enjoyed listening to it. The narrator is excellent as well, breathing life into many characters that might have otherwise seemed one dimensional. Definitely recommended for war buffs.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book was painstakingly researched and full of the kind of detail that military historians/afficionados find fascinating. Unfortunately, I am not one of those readers & the whole book seemed way too long & I kept hoping that the author would just get on with it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I found this book to be very well written. With two story lines, the book was easy to follow, and remained entertaining the entire way. While I did think there was some excess detail in some places, I really enjoyed the book as a whole, and will definitely be looking forward to more by the author.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I found this book to be highly factual and surprisingly interesting. This could have easily ended up being dry and boring, but the author has a way of making you care about the characters and to follow their lives and careers. A very good read.
